DJI Osmo Action 4K Cam - $299 + Shipping / Pickup @ JB Hi-Fi

170

Seems a standard sale price now!

Also available at few other places at the same price but I had JB hi-fi gift cards to use and I was looking for a decent action cam.

  • Same price at Amazon AU if anyone prefers it :)

  • Store in title please

  • Are these ok for taking baby video quickly?

Have IP12 max and S21U around the house but we always miss the precious moment lol

You will more than likely have your phone on you most of the time. You will have to find this, power it on then hit record (no faster than opening the camera on your phone)
      Stick with what you have

      • Yeah a phone will almost always be the best bet. The only possible situation I can think of where this would be 'faster' is if you were going to mount it to your head/body and have it always rolling.

      • Thx I'll inform missus :)

Stop buying crap just use your phone.

Anyone use one of these for diving?

There's a decent 4k vid on youtube with someone using it as a dash cam, looks good. I'm gonna get one to replace my old Go Pro. Apparently they've even added a looping function with their updates, so that's a plus. To be honest, I just like the fact that they've been updating it consistently for like two years and they don't freeze/get black screens like the Hero 9…. Also the massive price difference.

Edit: Nevermind you said "diving" not driving… LOL.

    • Never mind :)

Probably the best action on the market for the price point. I found that there are a couple of points you may need to consider before buying though.

    Pros
    - Has a front screen for selfies and/or vlogging
    - Great stabilization
    - Great software support (still receives updates)
    - Lens cover is removable and so replaceable
    - Smaller form factor then a GoPro 9

    Cons
    - Requires a bracket to mount onto action cam accessories
    - Stabilization is not the market leader (GoPro 9 wins here)
    - Not as many accessories as GoPro products
    - Can only use either front or rear screens at a time, must be selected before recording which means you can't adjust on the fly

I would have bought one over the GoPro 9 if it was slightly cheaper (under $250) and didn't require a bracket to mount onto tripods

    • Do you own the hero 9? Has it glitched on you, and if yes, would you have an educated guess on what is the issue?

      • +1

Haven't had a proper glitch that some people have experienced. I have run into issues with present settings which caused me to second guess my choice. From what I've found, the GoPro really only shines in certain situations and environments. It's not a caught all that I assumed it'll be. For example, when used on a tripod to record training sessions, if the lighting is not optimum, depending on the settings I've chosen (resolution, ISO, FPS, stabilization) it will look blurry and/or over/under saturated.

It seems like the GoPro 9 is a Jack of all trades but master of none. You really have to fiddle with the settings and pre-set the presents for it to work. Apparently the DJI action works easier out of the box but it also has teething issues.

Keep in mind that I'm coming from a Sony FDR-X3000 which is basically perfect for cinematic shots and optical sensors. The issue I found with the Sony was the lack of screen, lack of accessories and lack of community support when something went wrong.

All in all, you'll be rolling the dice on whether the product works for you.

        • Thanks for the insight.

I'll probably just get the osmo action then. Can't be bothered to change settings all the time, when all I want is pointing and recording.

Now, time to go to JB and work some slick!

  • Also a heads up that you can get the GoPro 9 with an extra battery and 64Gb card for $460 by following 4iedemon's instructions toward the bottom of the comments on this deal (I have no idea which camera is better).

    • I have been looking at getting the OA or the gopro hero 9 (at that price point, hero 8 is only $20 cheaper).

The only down I have been seeing, from hero 7 to hero 9 is the camera glitches a bit.

Does this happen a lot, especially on longer ~1 hour clips? I am looking at getting one to record our monthly motorcycle rides, and I can't have a camera that glitches halfway through.

Based on my experience with cameras (cheap action and dslr), the glitch happens when the write speed can't catch up with the feed speed, so the onboard memory gets full thus glitching. Is this the case with gopros?

I am leaning towards the hero 9 because of the wider view and better stabilisation, but point above.

  • Catch.com.au also has it for $299 so I bought one on the Cashrewards Day to get another $30 off (assuming CR works, since it did NOT track this purchase).

Nice that the price was on JBHifi, Amazon and Catch.

Indicative of a possible runout ahead of a DJI Action 2, in the near future? Who knows, there's no indication bit plenty of speculation.

Check out YT for some helpful reviews, too. Like the cage with two cold shoe mounts for a mic and light source.
