Can any of these certs get me a job?

Don't have any it experience, which I'm told is absolutely necessary for any it job.

How the heck do I get one (eg help desk job) in the first place?

    • Do a tafe course

Already am. Love it so far.

Then you're on the right path. If you want a job while you study then it's more about attitude, professionalism and presentation rather than experience. Plenty of entry level helpdesk/tech support roles out there. Look at the isp's and Telco that have Aussie based call centres. Our even those companies that run call centres for multiple clients (IE. Salmat)

Well done, I heard Solutions Architect gets paid at least $200k a year and experienced ones get paid $500k a year

            @Homr: Lol what?

"at least" is completely wrong and naive.

There's a variety of consulting roles for architects, "cyber", engineers and everything else in ICT.

No role is guaranteed to be "at least" anything. There's contractor hourly rate or day rate positions and full time, permanent positions.

Location, experience, who you know, qualifications / education, your risk appetite etc all play a factor.

Every opportunity has pluses and minuses. Most of which have been discussed to death specific to ICT on here, whirlpool and anywhere else nerds gather.

          • @Homr: At someone in the industry, I know the market is paying 250 for good DevOps Engineers but nothing for 500 in Australia. Would love to hear where you heard it from

          • @Homr: You have have heard that but it isn't true.
Also just obtaining AWS Solution Architect Associate certifcation doesn't make you a solutions architect.

These cheers won’t get you a job without any experience.

A TAFE course is probably the best way to get started. Which course you do will depend on what sort of IT you want to do. It’s a big field. Do anything that gives you practical experience - practical parts of your course, your own side projects, an internship if you can find one.

From there it kind of depends what you want to do - if you want to do helpdesk, apply for lots of jobs. If you want to do development, devops, data science, etc still apply for jobs but it might be worth doing a boot camp course as these focus a lot on practical skills. After that, if you want to learn how to design and run systems in AWS (the biggest cloud provider by a very long way), then these courses are worth doing.

Good luck! It’s a hard industry to break into but the good thing is that most people focus a lot more on what you can do than how you got there - many of the best people I’ve worked with are self taught, or didn’t do a related uni degree. That stuff can help get you started but it isn’t the only way.

Source: Have done many kinds of development, devops and site reliability engineering over the last 20 years, and now provide help to companies that want to move to the cloud. I manage and mentor engineers from grad up to senior and lead levels and have done these certs and the pro level ones that follow them.

Agree that this course / certification wont get you a job straight away
However it is good for those who already have some hands on experience with AWS
but just not having a certification yet

Besides, it is also a good introductory course for those who have other cloud platform experience and wanna move to AWS (eg. GCP or Azure)

      • Yeah. Good point.

  • How much do the actual exams generally cost?

    • I recall somewhere between 100 and 300 USD per exam, depends on the exam.

Generally you type those questions into google…

      https://aws.amazon.com/certification/bulk-voucher/

    • Most are $150 USD at the associate level. Double that for Pro.

    • It's worth keeping in mind that after you pass an AWS cert exam, you currently get a 50% discount token for your next exam.

Thank you. I was looking for togaf courses too, but this can do.

Before anyone does these, they should start with the foundation course which is free - https://aws.amazon.com/training/course-descriptions/cloud-pr…
This is relevant to starting out with cloud and AWS, rather than using the tools to build. You would still need to sit the exam and pay the $100 for a cert valid for 3 years.

    • The foundation course is fine, but I suggest skipping the cloud practitioner cert if aiming to do any exam of this post, not worth it.

  • The SAA exam has questions on products not covered in Neil's and Boson practice exams. I highly recommend this comprehensive list which summarises (almost) all products.
