  • For that price I'd expect installation to be included.

Great priceas compared to RRP, but if your looking to do more than a couple lights around the house for ambience, LIFX is too expensive of a solution. My opinion is you areBetter to go with a zigbee or othe cheaper universal solution when your looking at more than 5 lights.

    • Yeah would be super expensive to do a house.

Wonder how the Mirabella ones from Kmart are.

      • Kmart one is not as bright as the LIFX but good for ceiling under 2.7m.

LIFX is Gimble and works with Apple HomeKit and the Kmart one doesn't.

        • Well I guess that covers about 1% of the market

        • Running the KMart ones at home, flashed with Tasmota through Home Assistant into HomeKit. At $30 a downlight they’re a much more palatable price, plus no foreign servers deciding my lights aren’t supported anymore (looking at you, Google)

And correct, the above is not for everyone

        • Mirabella Kmart ones should work with Siri Shortcuts

I got LIFX coloured downlights for ~ $64 from Amazon in December '20. These are only white plus lumens is 700. Okay deal but not great for what you get.

  • Cool but I live in apartment without roof access so I dunno how hard it is to install these hmm

    • you dont need roof access for replacing downlights, have a look link

I'm about ready to replace my LIFX with something else, driving me nuts. For some reason the newer ones I have frequently decide to drop LAN control which is how I switch them, by Zigbee switches via Home Assistant or Logitech POP switches.

Only seems to be on the newer Color 1000's. The old LIFX Originals don't miss a beat, nor do any of the Tuya based ones I have so don't see how it could be anything to do with my local network (oh cloud control still works too)

Think LIFX are bit pricey now there are plenty of alternatives.

    • What wifi router are you using? There are several threads about similar issues with simple fixes. I have Lifx globes, new and old. I only had the wifi drop-out once, can't remember what the fix was. I have Netgear Orbi Mesh which has known issues. However, the combo of Lifx and Orbi is running well.

Unifi AC-Pro. The thing I don't understand is they'll still respond to cloud requests, so I'm putting it down to something in the firmware for these, as it's different to the Originals.

Are you running 4.28 firmware? I had to downgrade my APs to 4.20 because there were SO MANY problems with it just losing comms to things. It’s pretty well documented and they haven’t fixed (pretty much given up on the AC gear since they started dropping the WiFi6 stuff it seems)

          • @[Deactivated]: So happens I downgraded to 4.20 last week, but that was because of the high cpu usage issue. If it was a wifi connection issue though the cloud connection shouldn't work, and can't say I noticed any problems elsewhere with connections dropping.

Mind you it's been a while since I checked if the cloud still worked when they stopped responding, I just flick the switch off to reset it.

Have to see how it goes.

    • Where did you get the Logitech POP switches? Haven't found them in Australia

      • Got them years ago from Amazon US (hubs have US pins but are universal voltage.)

    • Checkout the Bunning Wiz Atom downlights. Amazing and supercheap. Come with 3 year warranty, $26 a piece. Also Wiz was bought out by Philips recently.

I splashed for 6 of the coloured downlights a while ago but it was a bit of a disaster as my apartment's wifi is pretty bad (even with a Google Nest mesh setup) and some of the lights simply wouldn't respond to Flic switches at all, and sometimes would ignore the Google Nest Home too. Ended up selling them and going to Hue. If your wifi is rock solid, LifX is an (expensive) option but if you struggle with coverage, I'd be very wary.

If only they were 1000 lumens… 700 lumens for that price is unreal.

Good deal if you don’t mind solid wifi lighting though, provided you have a good home network. Bought 15 lifx bulbs a while back and had to return them all because they were so flaky with my average wifi router.

  • Anyone know any smart bulbs (color) that >1000 lms except LIFX? Trying to find an alternative cuz LIFX is soo damn pricey.

  • I know the guidelines and website says to have the gang switch replaced by qualified electrician, but how hard it is to do on your own?

    • It's not hard, but its potentially deadly and definitely illegal. So just get an electrician to do it.

If you do it wrong and burn your house down, or kill someone, is it worth the savings?

For a simple electrical task like this jump on Hipages and get some indicative pricing, or if you have to…Airtasker. Just make sure they have an Electrical Contractors Licence.

Maybe to alleviate the full on callout charge you could offer for them to do it while in your area next, rather than specifically call out to do it, if its not a rush job.
