Are You Subscribed to Amazon Prime?

Hello good people,

My monthly subscription for Prime just ended and was curious if most ozbargainers are actually subscribed to Amazon prime. I’m subscribed to their monthly service and not annual as I won’t be in Aus for 3 months (summer), hence it will not be worth it.

I think the free delivery service is pretty useful especially when I can’t meet the $39 threshold but there’s an issue - I’ve realized that, for the past few months, the fact that I have Prime made me purchase tons of unnecessary items from Amazon. Additionally, most of the items have “Subscribe & Save” which works out to be cheaper, thus making prime delivery kinda unnecessary

I use Netflix and Spotify so I don’t use Prime videos, music etc. I do use prime gaming for twitch prime and games but only for 1 or 2 loots. I don’t read either so it seems like I’m not using the full potential of this subscription.

TLDR: I was curious if most of you are actually subscribed to Prime and whether you think it’s worth it / necessary to subscribe.

Cheers.

I think there's better value in Prime than eBay Plus.
I don't buy a lot of stuff I don't need but would easily buy at least a couple of items that can justify the membership over shipping fees.
Also find their Prime delivery more reliable for next day compared to a lot of other options. I don't know how they can ship out small things that don't cost a lot but are delivered next day and still make money.

prime delivery is great compared to fleabay
    better range of quality stock
prime also comes with amazon prime video service and music service
I have been watching a lot of farscape and other classic scifi :D
then there are the gaming loot bonuses my kids all look forward to
    twitch prime included

I live 100m from a parcel locker so it's very convenient.

I just wish there was a lower limit for free international shipping. The range in Australia is much smaller.

    • +1

International shipping. I tend to just order a second item that’s out of stock to meet the minimum spend and cancel once my item ships.
Problem is there’s still not that great a range that’s shipping out of amazon us/amazon uk.

      • +1

That's genius, how do you know it won't come back into stock immediately?

        • +1

I read it on a deal post in December where amazon had temporarily removed the minimum shipping.

If the item you want is on amazon us buy your filler from amazon uk. It’ll actually split the order into 2 so you can cancel straight away.

I’ve just done this as the item I wanted was actually out of stock and it worked, will be my new system. It has the normal warnings of canceling part of order can incur shipping and/or loss of promos.
Auspost just delivered my $8.75 item from amazon us.

I was subscribed for two years but then I realised that most of my orders are over $39 anyway.

Now I subscribe for a month when I actually need to get something delivered from the US or when an order is small but savings are substantial.

"Now I subscribe for a month when I actually need to get something delivered from the US "
Yep, this is what I have been doing. the monthly sub is cheaper than international delivery and I factor that into whether or not the total price is OK. I do tend to buy a few lower priced items thru the month for those " I'll buy it one day " items
      .

    • Yes but when you use free delivery they take a week to deliver, compared to prime which is next day. Which when you want something now, makes a big difference.

      • I would not be so sure about that. I very often use free delivery and get items delivered next day even without Prime. Even though Amazon tells me that expected delivery date will be much later.

I don't understand why you would not use Prime video just because you have Netflix. They have different content, some of which is exclusive to amazon.

For example, this content is on Amazon prime video - the boys, the expanse, new Borat movie, the gentlemen, the invisible man, weeds, American gods, Battlestar galactica, new coming to America movie, fleabag, I care a lot (new movie), Jack Ryan, Goliath, X files, Seinfeld, always sunny in Philadelphia, parks & recreation, Downton Abbey, American horror story, heroes, House, good doctor, Big Bang theory. the office, top gear. Not saying these are necessarily all good or of interest… just showing that the content is different.

I think for $60pa it's an incredible deal. Worth it for the delivery or TV alone.

I can only watch a finite number of things in a month, so for other streaming services, I would alternate between them, that is have Netflix for a few then move to stan, etc.

Though at the price Amazon is, it is just more economical to have the yearly, as even if you don’t watch it for 3 or so months you are still ahead.

Not to mention all the adult content if you activate that feature in your settings…

      • adult content? The hell?

        • Oops… That is Disney+

Not everyone has time to watch a lot of shows, it will be a long time before I run out of things to watch on Netflix. I also don't need to order much stuff from amaz and when I do it's usually over $39.

      • Well for $5pm I think it's a bargain. YMMV

  • I wasn't, but I am now as I've been given 3 months for free for signing up with Vodafone.

Thanks for the mention about it being $60pa lunchbox99, when my 3 months is up I'll cancel and pay yearly instead.

I also agree, between the free shipping and video content, it's good value. Instead of me ordering from Aliexpress, ebay, etc. I now do most of that on Amazon.

I hate paying monthly subscription for things, but Amazon Prime is the one service im happy to pay for. Free delivery even on small items is fantastic, and I seem to stumble across some incredibly low prices from time to time that you would never find in the shops.

  • I had a yearly membership from an amex deal that I let lapse. I've occasionally bought the monthly plan when I want to purchase something from amazon us/uk. Works out slightly cheaper this way.

I would be tempted to sign up if the free photo storage comes to australia and netflix bans account sharing.

With Amazon/Prime, you will always wins. Unlike eBay/Plus you have to deal their bs service and their cowboy sellers.

    Prime sub4ever.

Considering shipping for everything without Prime is more than $10 for me it doesn't take many purchases to make it worthwhile.

  • Been a member since day one. Order staples off Amazon, and whatever good deals they have.
Do watch Prime here and there.
Definitely worth it in my eye

The value in Amazon is returns. They have the best returns service of any other store I know.

I can confidently buy from Amazon knowing I won't have much trouble returning a faulty item.

    • i think the international returns is a bit of a pain as they use the parcel point.

      • I can confirm that. Last item that I had to return to Amazon using Parcelpoint took 40 days.

    • true talking to a real person pretty much instantly helps as well

I was, didnt see value in it long term. Prime video dont care

About the same, it was good during the covid days. If I really want it in future, I will get it for month or so.

  • i don't usually use streaming services, but the inclusion of free shipping and being able to view recent movies ( as they took away the local ezydvd kiosk) is definitely worth it.

But saying that I am seeing alot of content on AP being behind a paywall.

amazon prime in australia is a shoddy cousin of how it operates in other countries.
    My issues with it:-
Slow parcel delivery (ie weeks instead of next day)
preorders not even ready on release dates
preorders on back order for weeks after release dates
    lack of items for sale
abundance of cheap chinese crap for sale
high prices (much higher than ebay for certain items)

    • +4

Slow parcel delivery (ie weeks instead of next day)

I've had just about everything I ordered from Amazon delivered within 48 hours.

      • Yeh that was my experience for a while then it all went pear shaped.
Don't know if they got a new delivery service or what, but everything was taking a minimum 5 days delivery up to 2 weeks for a few things.
I don't have an issue with that if I am notified but the amazon site said "delivery tomorrow" for all of these things, it was properly getting on my nerves leading me to cancel and look elsewhere.

Have you made a complaint to customer service?

        • Are you located within 100km from major city?

          • @Yummy: yep i live in a city :D
believe me, ive been on the phone with them a bunch and sorted things out, but when something takes repeated phone calls to get stuff sorted and send stuff, it becomes a chore and time to move on.

      • +2

Me too. I was shocked when my new rPi case arrived 6pm the next day after ordering at 11pm. Guy even knocked on my door until I came out and took it. Makes aussie post look like a joke.

        • I've even had stuff arriving on a Sunday…

I ordered some similar items from Amazon and ebay last Thur around midnight (ebay item was only 2 suburbs away).
I have Amazon Prime and Ebay Plus.

Amazon stuff arrived Sat morning. Ebay stuff arrived Tue afternoon.

  • I haven't watched my premium Netflix and Stan subscriptions for over two months since I got prime video. Way better content.
The downside is that I have frequent streaming issues with prime video. It's just a minor annoyance meaning that I have to resume the video.
I'm on NBN50 and never had any issues streaming Netflix, Stan or FTA catch up channels.

    • +1

What platform are you watching it on? Might be an issue with that version of the app.

I'm using it on a Telstra TV mainly and never had a problem. I'm still on Telstra cable.

      • Fetch Mighty and Mini boxes.

    • +1

I have the same issue and am on 100/20 FTTP. Same as you, no issues with other services. I've only noticed it as a problem now I'm using wifi to connect my TV to the internet rather than a wired connection in my previous apartment. My theory is that Prime has really crap buffering and any small issue with wifi (likely from the TV which is ~6 years old) causes it to freeze up.

  • +1

Yep, love Prime since 2008 and still keep both UK and AU Prime subs. Look forward to same-day Prime Now deliveries here eventually.

  • I stopped my subscription, however I thought it was pretty good value while I had it. I definitely used enough Prime Video to justify the cost so that the free delivery was a bonus. If they do bring unlimited photo storage to Prime subscription it will be very hard to pass up. With that being said I've 'survived' the past few months without the $1 spaghetti, $2 deodorant, microSD deals, foaming hand wash from earlier in 2020, Quilton, powerbank, and assorted knick knack deals (although I must admit I did stock up and splurge on these deals while I had it). Instead I've made do with eBay which I hadn't used in ages to order a smaller selection of items.

  • Yeah mostly for the Apex skins , and for the spontaneous deals that pop up on here

  • They've recently started offering free trials again, to people who already used one. Not sure what the time delay was,but great for someone like me, if you only buy something on amazon every few years, you have a chance of a free prime trial every time.

  • I have an Indian prime membership that I make use for the music and prime video. Can't use it for shipping though.

  • +1

Plenty of content and quality on prime video, way better than Netflix.

Also their selection of products and prices are really good, I hope they expand enough to offer more product selection so Australian retailers can lower their high prices.

  • New parent here. Prime has been fantastic for nappies, baby wipes etc delivered straight to our door. Also much cheaper than the supermarket.

Also great for all the other random extra baby stuff you didn't realise you needed - toys, books, cot sheets etc

Prime Video is good too - interface is crap compared to Netflix but content is good

  • Now MacKensey has married again, all hopes of getting a real bargain out of Amazon have faded away!
