eBay Gift Card Experience Wanted

Hello, I am looking at purchasing a TV on eBay and I was curious to see what experiences other people have had.

I was hoping to purchase some eBay gift cards when they are discounted in the future.

Has anyone had any recent experience with eBay gift cards?
Did they find that the $1000 restriction was there?

From the eBay website:
No more than a total of $1000 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per day, and no more than a total of $1500 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per calendar month. Further, you may only redeem a maximum of four Gift Cards in any single transaction (and fewer if you are redeeming Gift Cards in combination with other redemption codes, such as coupons or vouchers).

Can you stack/add the credit on to your account or can you only use it during a purchase?

If there is a $1000 day limit.
+ total of $1500/month

Could I stack $1000 and the next day add the remaining $500?

I don’t understand why they would want to limit gift cards but I’d love to hear from anyone who has recently 1st hand experienced this.

Thanks muchly.

  • Thanks for that. I was looking at the US eBay site.

I still would like to know about anyone’s experience with stacking/preloading an account.

    Thank you.

  • As Neoika linked, you can use up to a maximum of 8 gift card/codes per transaction. So that means 7 gift cards and 1 eBay discount code. I believe the largest eBay gift card denomination is $200 so that means a maximum of $1400 in gift card per transaction if you use a code. If you don't use a code you can use 8 gift cards up to $1500. It doesn't matter when you load the cards. 8 is the maximum.

    • So you can load up your account and have credit sitting on it?

I have not been able to find a way to do it.
Would anyone be able to provide some guidance?

From my knowledge you can only load in the gift cards at check out

      Thanks again.

      • No, they cant be loaded to an account. They are linked to your account after partial amount has been redeemed. In other words, used cards can not be used on other accounts.

Not sure why you want to "preload". It makes no difference. Just add something expensive to your basket, go to checkout, enter all your gift cards then cancel the transaction. Those gift cards should come up the next time you go to the basket and you just tick the check boxes to use the gift cards. The credit is still on the gift card not your account.

$500 is the largest available through Shopback Swap Card, but that's only 5% off.

You can only redeem $200 at a time. A $500 swap gets you $200 *2 and $100. If you want to maximise cash back buy the $200 one.

Not sure if we have crossed wires, but I swapped a ShopBack $500 Swap Card for a $500 eBay Gift Card yesterday and used it in one go. ShopBack have tracked a 5% saving $25 in my account.

Maybe it was an availability thing when you purchased?

          • @Master Bates: Could well be. When I did it it only offered me $200.

          • @Master Bates:

ShopBack $500 Swap Card for a $500 eBay Gift Card yesterday

Is this due to a recent change in policy with regard to the $500 Swap cards?
It always split into 3 eBay gift cards, which is damn annoying if you were trying to purchase a $2K item.

            • @DoctorCalculon: No idea, but I'm not sure I'll be risking any further Gift Card purchases based on the comments below.

Not worth it for what is a very small saving compared to the potential loss.

  • I wouldn't recommend it given the "current Glitch'

I am really sorry then I wont be able to help you out in this case. It looks like the amount from the gift cards were wiped out due to the suspension carried out in your account. Please accept my apologies, there is nothing I can do here to help you for this issue.

    Out of pocket 1.5k
Seemingly no recourse in the event of arbitrary account termination…

    • Why did eBay find your buying behaviour risky? Did you do anything unusual?

      • No idea.. 1 purchase this year no problems no refund requested.
Apparently they can't answer why due "security reasons"
Can't help but feel it had something to do with emailing the address in the other thread about a refund.

Activity on your account isn’t following policy: Abusive buyer policy

        • Requesting partial refunds without returning the items.
        • Requesting partial refunds without returning the items

WTF! What is there to return? "Thin air"?
Did you ask to speak to a supervisor?
          $1.5K is no small loss.

          • @DoctorCalculon: Happened to me too. Lost over $300 due to account termination (with no explanation given). When I asked for further information on why my account was banned they would not share and disconnected the chat.

            • @prodnus:

              Happened to me too.

              Sorry to hear about this.
Were you able to recover the lost funds?

Also, did you exceed any gift card limits set out in their T&Cs?

              • @DoctorCalculon: Nope just gave up. Doubt ACCC could help noting that using by using eBay you agree to their T&C's and are at their mercy.

Didn't think there were any gift card limits?

The only reason the gift cards were lost is because Good Guys refunded the order due to a price error so those gift cards got locked to that account (lesson learnt: don't use gift cards on items that are cheaper than usual if there is a risk of it being a price error)

                • @prodnus:

those gift cards got locked to that account

If you haven't engaged in any illegal activity or broken any rules, under what grounds was your eBay account terminated?
                  It seems very heavy handed.

  • I recently purchased from Good Guys eBay.

Used 5% gift cards cash back from CashRewards (2x$500, 1x$200). eBay only allowed increments of $200, so had to do 5x$200 and 2x$100 vouchers. All work successfully and got the cash back within a few days. Stacked with GoodGuys eBay 17% off, so saved almost $300.

I also messaged TA prior to going ahead to confirm all was OK ;)

TL/DR: Used $1200 in eBay gift cards earlier this month (5/3)

  • I bought a 3k fridge yesterday. Max $1500 gift card per transaction. I paid by a discount code, three $500 gift cards and paypal.

    • $500 gift cards

Where did you buy your $500 eBay gift cards from?

      • Shopback app swap gift card.

        • So, they can be swapped into a $500 eBay gift card then.
According to Fiximol this was not the case.

          • @DoctorCalculon: I swapped to $500 ebay. I still have the emails from swap.

Swap gift card doesn't have $200, need to buy either $250 or $500.
