I reckoned it would be wiser to go for the S21 since the new exynos is pretty impressive with battery efficiency… unless, you want a dedicated S-pen at this price range.

    • -1

doesnt this note have a Exynos Chip?

      • +6

One gen older though. S21's Exynos 2100 is a lot closer to a Snapdragon 888 than the Note20's Exynos 990 was to the Snapdragon 865.

      • +2

Yes, the older one with with the Samsung design, not the ARM design for the new one in the S21… but this is the gimped Note 20 as well, which some hypothesised was just there to sell the Note 21 ultra.

If you need a stylus you have little choice (older Note 10 series (3 of them), Note 20 or the S21u) , the Note 21 series has been delayed until next year due to chip shortages according to Samsung, There is no SD expansion in the S21 (or the Note 20, just the N20u) which completely counts it out for me. I'd rather the new A52 5G (the 5G for the better SOC not for 5G) and moan about the lack of stylus :)

I still have a 8/512 Note 9 with a 256 SD (all up about 512GB being used) its goign great but my parters Note 8 is staring to have issues.

    • +1

And the micro sd slot for this is a huge plus

      • +1

Didn't they cut the sd card from the non-ultra?

        • Correct

    • I don't feel like my S21 has particularly good battery life

      • It did have a few battery issues on launch. Maybe you should check whether they have any updates for your phone. If not, maybe there are some applications/services in the background which are draining your battery. Some people have gotten ~10 hour SOT on the phone - Which is absolutely amazing

        • My phone is up to date, and I'm not the only one experiencing this.

The phone lasts a day, not comfortably, but it lasts the full day, maybe 5 hours SOT. That's about average for a smartphone and has been average since like 2012. People who get 10 hours SOT are getting it unrealistically, like 12 hours total use 10 hours SOT, minimum brightness, 60hz, and watching 10 hours of videos or something

  • What's an exynos chip?

    • Samsung's own CPU

    • +5

A huge hoo-ha about a chip that was not used for the US model and which performs somewhat less in benchmarks but at the same time doesn't really have any day to day impact on most users who don't use the phone as a dedicated gaming machine.

      • Maybe not noticeable at first, but you feel just how hot the Exynos runs & how it drains battery faster even in normal use cases when an Android update or two drops.

Already can notice it on my partner's Exynos 990 S20 vs my own Snapdragon 865 fairly similar phone.

        • +6

          I have a Fold 2. Had a S20U 512gb and before a S10 5G.

Every phone ran every app fine.

Every phone needed charging every day.

          Every phone takes great photos.

          Chips are overrated.

          • +2

            @scuderiarmani: Apple M1: say what?

            • +10

@chankaran: I could think of 10 million reasons why I wouldn't buy Apple.

              The chip is irrelevant.

          • -2

@scuderiarmani: I think you will see the actual difference in high temp of Australian summer. Never owned an Exynos, so can't comment on long term use. But if Exynos is hotter than Snapdragon on average. It will definitely perform worse.

            • +3

@Mi2: I live in Adelaide. In the hot Plains. With a double storey town house.

I'd say that's alot of heat

              Never an issue.

Only time my phone gets hot is in a big update and the Fold 2 was burning weeks ago.

I don't care for mobile gaming, I have all consoles and a 3080 PC.

          • @scuderiarmani:

            Chips are overrated.

Chip in mobile phone is much more than A CPU in your computer.

            • @Indomietable: When I can run every app I need on my Dads A20, yeah they are.

              • @scuderiarmani: If you put it like that, then everything is over rated. Why buy Armani if you can get Anko? Why buy a car when you can breed ride horse?

                • @Indomietable: Like I said, I buy phones for other reasons.

I don't give 2 shits about fps on pubg.

I don't give 2 shits that an app starts a millisecond quicker.

My phone doesn't make the opposite sex more attracted to me.

You buy your SD model. Whatever makes your life so complete.

        • +1

I have the s20 fe 4G. Exynos runs fine. Hardly notice the heat. Having said that, I don't game on mobile. That might be the difference

          • +1

@Lesco Brandon: My s21 got really hot today just downloading the pubg 700MB patch

        • +1

According to this tech reviewer, the snapdragon variant runs at a hotter external temperature. ~2:45 mark https://youtu.be/yuNNmf2gIRc

Interesting in real world tests the exynos version seems to be slightly faster at certain tasks according to that tech reviewers comparison. So your typical user will see their social media apps launch a mind blowing .xxx1 seconds faster. And yeah chips are overrated, since even midtier chips nowadays open 99% of apps that people mostly use in .xx seconds. I mean it’s got ridiculous how people carry on about these minor differences anyways.

          • +1

            @Ronnnie: Great post.

I don't care if one day my phone has an AMD 5950X and an Nvidia 3090 built in somehow with 64gb ram.

            It's useless to me.

I run apps, they work. They work on an A20, they work on a S21.

There's more important features in phones for me.

I am waiting for a deal on Ultra

  • +3

Only if it was ultra at that price

    • Maybe next year
Edit - nvm! I thought you meant s21 Ultra

  • +7

Love how every deal on Samsung pretty much becomes an ExYnOs vs SD thread. 🙄🥱

    • +1

Hahaha, it's been like this for years :)

At first Exynos used to always come out on top, then there was a period of time where the Snapdragon was quicker… Now the tables have turned once again HAHAHA

      • +1

SD is still quicker, not saying it as a fanboy just the reality of right now.

        • +2

You should really fact check before commenting things like that.

They are extremely close this year varying depending on what benchmark is used.

  • This would be the most expensive phone I've ever bought, any tips regarding "not breaking it", or "insurance" if that's a thing?

(Yes, I will buy a case)

Also, lots of comments about waiting for the Note 21…

    https://www.tomsguide.com/news/the-galaxy-note-21-now-looks-…

  • Deal's gone

  • +2

Honestly, if you want a note, you either save money and go for a Note 10 plus or pony up for the Note 20 ultra. The Note 20 is just bad even at this price. It only really existed to up sell people into the ultra.

    • 100%. I have a note 10 plus and mate has Note 20 5G. Cannot see the point in even having his phone tbh. He's a docile kinda dude that knows zero about tech and still went and bought it despite advising him.
