  • 1 year warranty?? WD must be crazy.

    • WD is not crazy, I have one and it clearly states 5 years. Should have questioned OP.

    • Yeah the Umart listed warranty is often incorrect, but I will say some of the WD documentation contradicts itself…
like the WD Blue Sata SSD 2Tb I got a few months back says 5 year warranty on box, documentation in the box says 3 years for blue SSD, 5 for black

      • I believe WD did "warranty reduction" a while ago - WD Red used to have 5 years warranty but they reduced it down to 3 now.

Will this work in an enclosure?

    • +1

Depends on the enclosure. I bought an enclosure thinking it was the correct type for NVME for my crucial P1 and it did not fit. Just make sure your enclosure definitely fits this type of drive because some only fit SATA M.2 drives.

    • +3

Pretty sure this will be a massive waste in an enclosure.

A 10Gbit USB USB 3.0 enclosure will limit transfers to 1250MB/s at the theoretical max.

Something like this wouldn't limit the drive, but it's stupid expensive: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/hard-drives-&-ssds/enclo…

The real question is: what do you plan to do with the drive once it's in an external enclosure?

My work is split between a desktop and a laptop, hybrid wfh. I'm using a Samsung T5 right now, but I've found it to be a huge downgrade from the NVME drives on both my desktop and laptop while processing 100GB+ files.

Desktop has a 3.2 gen 2 (20Gbps/2.5GBps), laptop has Thunderbolt 3, so I'm assuming a speedy enclosure should be able to use most of the speed from an NVME drive?

Would something like this work? https://www.pcbyte.com.au/store/product/simplecom-se528-nvme…

These are good for doing an operating system drive image with acronis.

Btw, similar price for a ugreen enclosure from aliexpress, $57.32 inc postage for 20Gbps.

Extra $4 US off in the sale coming up,

But there is also a current voucher of $4 aud for over $39.41 (click on get coupons).

10Gbps is $22.65. Good for simple use like an occasional backup image of a nvme.

          • @metalslaw: Is Orico the same brand as ugreen?

            • @Jolakot: No. But both are effectively name brands at this point.

Here are the links to the orico enclosures,
$23.21 for 5Gbps SATA only version. $40.23 for 10Gbps NVMe version (with small discount voucher atm),

              • @metalslaw: 20Gbps version.. that's usb 3.2 gen 2x2. How many people have a PC or laptop with that type of ports?

                • +2

@netsurfer: Yep, most pc's only will only have 10Mbps usb-c ports.

And fyi for anyone following this thread, usb 3.0, usb gen 3.1 gen 1, and usb 3.2 gen 1 are the same thing. All running at 5Mbps.

Usb 3.1, usb 3.1 gen 2, and usb 3.2 gen 2 are the same thing. All running at 10Mbps.

Usb 3.3 Gen 2x2 is the fastest, running at 20Mbps.

Also USB-C ports can be either 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 or 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 (usually the later).

                  And USB Type-A port can be 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2, 5Gbps 3.2 Gen 1 or even USB 2.0

Here is a quick overview of the usb naming fiasco for anyone interested,
                  https://www.cnet.com/how-to/usb-3-2-explained-making-sense-o…

        • Provided it is the right key, that enclosure looks good (can't see m or b key anywhere on the listing).

I would probably pay a bit more for pcbyte rather than AliExpress for ease of returns if needed. (Not that I've had any issues with AE)

Your use case sounds like it makes sense to go nvme then, and this is a good price for the sn-750.

You will get the majority of the potential out of it:
          2500/3400=73.5% of max read
          2500/2900=86.2% of max write

So if you're writing to the drive and able to hit the maximums, it will do 100gb in ~40s as opposed to 35s (via pcie/internal).

In reality it will probably be a bit slower than this

    • Yes it should, make sure it's 2280 and an M-key enclosure (based on the 5 pin connector), I also made a mistake buying an enclosure :(

    • I have one of these from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07TJT6W8K/ref=ppx_yo_d…

      $45

I have the WD Black NMVe 500GB in it, and it works very well. It does limit its full capability, but as far as external storage goes, its smokes.

    • To get full speeds a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure will be your only option if your PC/Laptop has a Thunderbolt 3 40Gbps port.
      $98 from here: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPX7y9Z

  • Will this work on lenovo amd s540 13?

  • -4

For most PC users 2x 970 Evo Plus 1TB (which is faster) for around $150-160 each after sales and cashback is a better deal.

    • +10

But that requires two NVMe slots
