    • +3

      Sounds good, thank you!

  • Just got myself a new TV cabinet and setup so told myself I needed a new amplifier and front speakers (to match new TV cabinet).

Spent nearly $2k on the setup. Setup is bulky and needs some careful planning to hide it all, not to mention heat management.

Had my eye on SONOs as a simple replacement - wow they look attractive.

    • +2

Yes, I find the constant arguments that a DIY setup is 'better' for everyone to be a little unrealistic.

    • Depends on your priority really. If you prefer better sound a more immersive experience, a separate system will always beat a soundbar even if some soundbars out there claim 9.1.4.

The only arguments for soundbars for me is if you're after aesthetics, lack the space, and just want better sound than TV speakers.

      • Yes, I'd say that's all accurate. I tested my system yesterday and while I haven't as yet had a soundbar of quality (all under $500), I imagine an expensive one still wouldn't be able to compare to the dedicated system.

        • The reason I went with separates was because I had a Samsung Q90R, which was regarded as the best soundbar of 2019-2020 but felt a lot was missing. I started with a 3.0 setup with the money I got from selling it and it blows it out of the water with every content I watch.

  • This or the Edifier 2.1

  • +4

    $2,000 for a sound bar?

    • +8

they sound good, the size is what you're paying for. If size/looks isn't a constraint, you can get much better sound for much less.

      • +7

Also it carries the name Sonos.

    • and a woofer! believe me 2K for Sonos Arc and the subwoofer is worth it!

      • +6

and a woofer! believe me 2K for Sonos Arc and the subwoofer is worth it!

"Worth it" is entirely dependent on what exactly you want from these speakers, and it's fine if you want the "sonos system" and be able to fiddle with it by using an app.

But I sincerely hope it's not the sound quality that you're talking about here. Don't get me wrong, the sound isn't going to be bad, but you could certainly get much better sound from plenty of other brands (Jamo, Klipsch, JBL, Polk, Paradigm, Wharfedale, etc.) for that money.

For instance, the sonos "sub3" seems to be listed at like $1000 and here's an SVS SB-1000 12 inch sub listed for $899 https://www.digitalcinema.com.au/svs-sb-1000-dsp-controlled-… , and I'd bet that the SBS will punch a lot harder (and deeper too, goes down to 24Hz). Here's the SVS PH-1000 (ported) 10 inch sub for the same price: https://www.digitalcinema.com.au/svs-pb-1000-300-watt-dsp-co… and this one goes down to 18Hz!

I am sure you won't struggle to find a set of speakers for $1000 to pair with one of the above subs that will outperform the sonos sound bar in sound quality.

TLDR: Don't delude yourself into thinking that this is going to deliver "premium quality sound", especially given the price, because it won't.

        • +8

Do these speakers and subs you mention power themselves or will you need to spend an additional $1K+ on an AV?

Also, if you are looking at the SVS subwoofer, I would be recommending the newer SVS PB1000 Pro or the SVS SB1000 Pro.

          • +2

@name not-important: Good point, indeed. The sub I linked to is a powered unit but the speakers are not. However, you could find powered bookshelves as well in the price mentioned.

Of course the newer models will be better, but I'm only linking the older models here as those will still comfortably beat the best that Sonos has to offer and are also cheaper.

I'd even go as far to say that you could get a relatively cheap receiver, good speakers and a sub and get far better sound quality. Alternatively, there are similar self-powered systems from other brands that will sound better as well.

            • +2

@CocaKoala: Totally agree with Koala. Pretty sure you could find active studio monitors that, together with the SVS, would crush the Sonos on everything except form factor.

            • @CocaKoala: i am a sound noob, lol if you were to put a system together with either of the subs you mentioned? what would you put together to have something similar or better to the Sonos Arc?

              • @hayden007: Hi Hayden, a sub alone isn't a replacement for the the Sonos combo deal here. I'm afraid this will be a long winded answer, but will come around and reply to you later in the week.

                • @CocaKoala: thanks for the reply! if you get a change that would be awesome!

        • +2

          What are you talking about?

The arc has are eight premium mids and four premium tweeters (more than most towers) with built in amplifiers and a receiver optimised for this sound bar and the latest tech (like ARC from the TV). Just like new apple products at release, if you are after every feature it offers, the arc offers excellent value.

Sono's subs suck. But unlike the Arc, they weren't designed for SQ. They were designed for easy networked audio, just like the rest of sonos' old range. But it dosen't matter, as Arc's go low for front speakers (let alone soundbars), The sub is only needed from 30 to 60Hz. Most people only care about volume in that range, not f3, frequency response or distortion.

          • +1

@This Guy: I've listened to a number of Sonos products, and a variety of systems comprising of various premium quality speakers over the years. I could swear that I could put together a better sounding setup than a Sonos one at the same or lower price minus the bells and whistles that Sonos comes with.

Here's the opinion of someone working for Sonos, shared publicly:

            Are they Audiophile speakers? No.

I think that our main USP is the integration of many music sources and connectivity. My audiophile friend thinks Sonos is great "for what it is meant to do" but the sound is coloured, no illusions there.

            https://en.community.sonos.com/what-to-get-228989/just-curio…

            • @CocaKoala: Then swear.

Where are you buying a 9.2 channel atmos receiver for under $1800? Let alone $1400?

How can I purchase an off the shelf, 8 channel front end with an amp supporting atmos for $1400? Bought individually 12 equivalent quality drivers would cost around $600 Australia (plus shipping) from parts express (Sonos uses significantly cheaper factory direct bulk purchasing in China). It would be about a third cheaper to buy similar quality driver's to Krix's Atmospherix /Hemispherix range (but they wouldn't have Krix's famed colour). And I would have to design and build the boxes myself (ok, that's a plus).

So I am at $2400 and my front and front sides aren't even bi amped like the Arc. My lounge room is now a mess with 6 speakers along the front wall and two bolted to the roof.

Off the shelf I would need industry pricing on a good month (slightly better than sale price) and go Polk in walls (which I personally think sound as bad as the beam) for any chance of hitting $1400 and with an 8 channel, atmos front and atmos amp. I would have no money left over for cables or install. So IMO significantly worse sound, ten months out of the year significantly more expensive, and I spend half a day in the roof, but better positioning….

Oh. You didn't read my second paragraph. And are talking about the rest of Sonos's range.

Go demo an Arc. Or read a review or two from someone you trust.

    • Well as soundbars go it is one of the best, if not the best.
It does could do with more connections though.

    • I have these sub, Arc, previous play bar, also full blown Yamaha, jamo & paradigm as well,
But ever since I bought ArC & paired with older G2 sub, very rarely use other sound systems. You get what you paid for

  • Would this work with 85 inch tv?

    • Yes, all sizes.

      • +1

        Depends on sound bar placement.

Sonos recommends 65" and up for Arc, if sound bar is going in between TV legs.

(I have a 55" on a cabinet and indeed, the Arc doesn't fit).

        • +1

49" and up for an Arc according to their speaker recommender https://www.sonos.com/en-au/speaker-recommender

But I don't know if it's just them trying to get an upsize or a proper "optimum" set up.

          • @nayfon: Hmmm maybe I saw that as a caution else where, I only measured cause I read it some where!

Can't hurt to do a quick measure if you've got a smaller set just to be sure :) Unless the tape measure flings back really fast and slaps you in the fingers, that'll hurt.

    • +1

It would work if that TV has HDMI ARC (or even better, eARC).

  • Point to note .. "HDMI-eARC on your TV is required to play lossless Dolby Atmos audio using the Dolby TrueHD codec." Everything else plays via a standard ARC port

    • I believe You will get in ARC lossless Atmos provided your TV supports the codecs. My 3-year-old LG OLED supports ARC only and I can see on Sonos App the Dolby Atmos supported

      • +3

All streaming services use lossy Atmos via the Dolby Digital plus container. Which works over standard ARC.

Any type of lossless audio tracks will not and will require e-arc. But that's not really an issue if you're using the built-in streaming apps on your tv. Since they all use DD+.

  • I need a deal on a beam, haven't seen anything since black friday. (Should have just bought one then, I know lol)

    • What’s considered as a deal for you?

When I got my beam I walked in and asked if they were willing to give me at the price I was willing to pay and they did it haha. As long as it’s not unreasonable.

      • +1

What’s considered as a deal for you?

        Lowest historical price!

      • Close to black friday price would be nice haha. How much did you pay for yours? And where JB?

        • +1

I bought it for $459 back on December 2019

  • Daaaamnit. I just bought these individually like a month ago

    • If you paid via CC check if your card has "price protection" i.e. claim the difference back

  • +1

Thanks, bought 3 for the family.

    • Can you spare one for me please DM.

    Hey rep how about $1969.69?
    I’ll upvote!

    • +2

you really like that number 69, don't you?

  • Dreaming of the day the Arc drops below 1k.

why is it so expensive …

    • +1

beacause it has sonos written on it

  • +13

For anyone considering any other soundbar + sub combo and cost is not a factor, Sonos should be one of them on their list.
They are really good with some obvious pros and cons.

I have been using Sonos for the last 10 years+ with more than 15 speakers +3 subs and the (Arc + Gen3 sub and two ones in a room as a mini home cinema) across my entire home.
(Arc + Gen3 sub and two ones XL in a room as a mini home cinema) - is really good.

If you have the budget and space is a constrain, it is worth considering Sonos Arc+Gen 3 sub combo to start with and Add two one xl pair (without mic you will save $$).
The above setup is also very clean and simple

    Pros:
    Excellent surround soundstage
Tight bass from the sub is one of the best I have felt. ( I am comparing with one of the best subs like the twin SVS subs I have)
If you have bigger space, Now Sonos S2 lets you add another Sub as well.
For the Music lovers - overall good acoustic soundstage and even better if you listen on a high bit rate tidal master audio tracks.
    Night sound mode
Immersive gaming experience when hooked with Xbox Atomos compatible gaming titles

    Cons:
No DTS support is a big let off, If you are only watching streaming content then this should not be an issue for you.
Compared with a good Center speaker, I feel Arc still lacks good dialogue delivery. (even after selecting speech enhancement on - option)

I have compared my Sonos setup with my Main home theatre setup which obviously is not fair ( Martin Logon Motion series + Yamaha 3080 + 2 SVS PB2000 with an 11.2 Atmos setup) but at least you know what I am comparing with and why I say it is good for what it is.

Note: Once you are stuck in the Sonos ecosystem it will add up to the overall cost as you upgrade and expand.
The above review is just my opinion and others may have a different experience based on their setup.

Also please keep in mind that Sonos has an upgrade program, for example - if you have a Gen 1 Play 5 - you will get a 30% discount even on the entire set and can be redeemed once.

    Hope the above info helps

    • +3

Yep, while most companies give rewards to new customers only, Sonos is one that rewards their old customers :-) Check if you have one of these devices listed here so you can buy any upgrade at a significant discount (and still keep your old one).

    • +2

      Nice wowbro.

Had one of each of the sonos units over the years but my biggest complaint is that it doesn't let you pair your old gen speakers with the newer versions of it. (Eg gen 1 play 1 or 5 with gen 2>)

Also some units don't have plug and play audio ports like bose etc.

Love sonos as it is easy to add new speakers but my wallet cries everytime i want/need something new.

      • Yes Misterpompom, there are more cons that I should add to the list :) some of them you have already highlighted, and also no Bluetooth (only on Move & Roam / audio ports / no DTS support, like playing anything over my NAS via plex, any DTS tracks it has to transcode and does not sound as good as the original soundtrack does.

About the S1 / S2 app, I can understand where Sonos is coming from. They had to create a new app S2 at some point to accommodate new features.

And the price I could not justify the cost as well, even with added discounts, They are expensive.
Overall compared with other Wifi Speakers in the market they are good in terms of quality hardware + their software mix + ease of use.

  • -1

Available in black for the combo?

    • -1

Neg because of price rise, not lack of black colour. See posts below.

  • This or HW-Q950TXY considering you can get a soundbar, woofer, and two satellites in half the price?

    • Where can you get the Q950T for $1K? I recall that deal a while back, and kinda regret not jumping on it..

    • Removed - replied to wrong post

  • +2

Solid alternative here with the Q900T (although it is a factory second): https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-HW-Q900T-series-9-Soundb…

    $699 if you have Plus

I'm waiting for delivery of the Q950T from the same seller after using the AfterPay discount

    • I bought the Q900T demo unit from Harvey on the weekend for $550, only damage is a scratch on the sub that I'll never see.

Feeling pretty chuffed with that bargain, retail at launch was $1599

  • If space restriction and minimalistic setup is desired then Sonos is best in what it delivers with convenience.

  • +1

As a nerd rocking the old school AMP and 7 speakers for years, I made a move to the soundbar+bass module (Bose) setup and can comfortably say it's been the best switch ever. The room looks tidier, the wife is happier, the sound is 70-80% as good. Win win.

    • +1

I actually went the other way. I spent two years with a Samsung soundbar and subwoofer set up ($1600) and flipped to the Sonos Amp and B&W 607 S2s ($2000 total at rrp) and my new set up sounds just as good for TV but for music completely blows the soundbar away. Plus it's more convenient as I get the Sonos app to play music through. Plus the amp is hidden away and the oak veneer speakers look better than the soundbar.

  • Is this soundbar really necessary when my tv is around that price market? :P

    • Even more necessary. Big expensive TV with terrible flat screen speakers - poor overall experience.

  • +1

thank god it's free delivery :P

  • +1

Hi guys how this compared to Bose 700 soundbar with bass module?
    Thanks

  • I had the JBL 9.1 on order from JB but they can't get me stock so I have to get the SONOS now.

It does not bother me too much but the detachable fully wireless rear speakers were the main reason I wanted the JBL system.

Is there any word on battery-powered rears being added to SONOS products that are compatible with this ARC?

  • Yet to try it but if you use Kodi apparently this solution will allow you to transcode DTS to Dolby on the fly.

  • Got the jbl soundlink link with sub for $344 hopefully this is good

  • Any soundbars you guys would recommend in the $500 to $700 range?

  • Another idea to save $650… pair two Play 5's together for proper stereo and better music, if Sonos is your bag. Prob got enough heft to it to dodge the need for a sub if you got a small lounge room. I don't really see the value of all the various DTS style sound decoding in your average soundbar/ 2ch set up.
Personally I got a pair of Kef Lsx on special for $1350 (often gettable for under $1500 throughout the year) and a Rel Tzero Mk3 sub on special for $675 recently, as my 2k-ish system
Destroys any soundbar and hides nicely behind my A1 oled when not being used.

    • But this setup still needs a receiver, right?

      • No, none of these do

        • How do you connect the KEF Lsx & Rel Tzero to the A1?

  • Only atmos , limited HDMI port and for 5.1 very expensive

  • +1

the sub is a great value and look awesome. The best part about sonos sub is it's wireless so you can position it with more flexibility. I would suggest getting a wall mount, looks awesomely neat

However, if you are used to midfi/hifi stereo, this sub is at best average. Wouldn't beat your traditional sub used for home audio system but for home theater, it's reasonable.

  • Anyone have good movie configuration settings guide?

Or should I leave it all to the app wizard/guide?

  • Price increased to $2150 from $1999. Not a deal anymore.

  • +3

Was $1999, now $2150. No longer a good deal, and a neg for being sneaky about getting likes at a low price then putting the price up.

    • +2

Yep, wasn't great too begin with and a sneaky update to the price without editing the post.

      • +1

Fairly certain (from experience) that OB does not allow op to change the deal price, whether up or down… op should expire this and create a new post with the new price.
