Another game where the base game is free but if you want the full experience that's a few hundred bucks in DLC.

    • True. And then there are those games where you pay 60 dollars for the base game and a few hundred bucks in DLC (I am looking at you Paradox!).

    • +1

Well a Magic fan (either physical cards or online) would be used to 'few hundred bucks' in RNG loot boxes for the full experience. Fits right into the genre.

The game is actually terrible, don't even bother.

    • For free it is actually fine. Not sure what people expect but the gameplay is actually not bad and quite varied.

hardly, here's my take i sent to my friends:

it's unoptimized runs pretty average, laggy as (profanity), 300ms cos we're australian, about 20% of the time skills just don't hit at all, the cards you get just don't matter at all cos you're just spamming them anyway and all you see is the icon to know what card you're casting, but you don't look at it cos you're positioning your character to not die to mobs etc. and the cards don't always have the same number to cast them cos when you use them you get a different card from your deck in that slot, so you just end up spamming eevrything hoping things die.

Looking at the trailer and gameplay they have done nothing to lure in the Magic fan base. I see a fake Teferi, Jace rip-off, female Koth clone and 2 other nobodies for the other colors. I will try it out but as a MTG player I am not filled with confidence.

    • That's a fair comment. Not great in replicating Magic but simply as a game it is not too bad, especially for free, to spend some hours.

  • Up there with the most grindy pay to skip models there is.

I didn't last long before uninstalling. Not good, i change my mind, i am not willing to give this a chance. Stick with Path of Exile if you want a good free isometric hack and slash. Also the game has 2 season passes in open beta and just is predatory in terms of monetization.

    There are plenty of good free to play games out there and this is not one of them. Other options;

    • Path of Exile as mentioned
    • Magic Arena itself
    • COD Warzone
    • Fortnite
    • Rocket League
    • Warframe
    • Paladins
    • Rogue Company
    • Apex Legends
    • Destiny 2
    • Dota 2
    • League of Legends
    • Geshin Impact
    • TF2
    • Valorant
    • Starcraft 2
    • Gwent

    just to name a few

Spend some money and you can actually get a good game in the same genre like

    Grim Dawn
    Diablo 2 Remastered/Diablo 3
    Titan Quest Anniversary Edition
    Torchlight 2

I'm just honestly just mentally tired of crap cashgrabs and your time is better spend elsewhere.

The game is just plain bad if you ignore the monetization.

As a big Magic fan, I'm not touching this after watching a bunch of reviews. It's a shame Wizards tied into this company, but I guess there was a certain logic. It seems a little hypocritical for people who buy card packs and digital game pieces on Arena to find buying digital game pieces and cosmetics distasteful when provided through a different game. Still, there's something more than a bit gross about it.

    • Exactly. They obviously care only about money. Otherwise they would release full decks for people for a set price so everyone has every card from the beginning. Then sell expansions from there.

  • What annoys me is that MTG cards expire and can't be used is the common game formats after 2 years. How they convince people to buy stuff from me and basically throw it away (or sell in bulk) 2 years later only to buy more is beyond me. I'm guessing this is now enforced by Arena and this new program.

You're half right, rotations are every 2 years for standard. However there are other formats you can play with those cards like Historic for Arena or Modern/pioneer/legacy etc. They don't just become worthless over night, especially the chase mythics and rares.

What you want to avoid is card bans in most formats (see Oko or Uro)

    • You've got to find the right people to play with. Many casual players couldn't give a hoot what's a legal card and what isn't, especially when playing nonofficially.

In Arena though it is a bigger issue as the formats for older card use are less played and getting set up for Historic and finding a game is a pain. This is what actually turned me off Arena.

      • I bought a stack of older cards to make up decks with the kids - a mix of lands and regular cards, a few rare but no foil and no Planeswalkers. Their uncle introduced them but him and the cousins aren't local and the fad seems to have died down and I haven't gotten around to doing much with them. Hoping they'll get back into it at some stage, or I've wasted my money. But at least i haven't spent hundreds of dollars on a single deck or worse, a single card. Stuff that for a joke. About $100 all up on cards and a few sets of sleeve protectors. Definitely under $150 anyway. Still too much if they never get used.

  • I played the original planeswalker before it was alright not sure what it means by starter pack
