This is starting tonight. Was amped for it, until I noticed its starting at 3AM!! Hopefully still around in the morning.

From their site:

Free Day 2012 will be on Wednesday January 11th, starting at 9AM Mountain Time. We will be increasing the pool to $200,000 this year (2011 was pretty amazing!). We will have some sort of a system to verify you're not a robot and if you're the lucky person that minute, you'll win a $100 gift code. That's it. Now go enjoy your turkey.

Wait, wait - what are you talking about Nate?

Oh sorry! You've not been here for the previous two Free Days. It's this thing we do to give back to our community and at the same time get some new friends to join the party. You come, you try, you might win a $100 gift code.

The Pool: 2011 is finishing up to be our best year yet. It looks like 2011 will be about 30% larger than last year so the Free Day 2012 pool will be 30% larger than last year's pool. That's $200k! That would buy you alot of heat shrink.

The Rules: The give away starts at 9AM MST (I'm sorry New Zealand!) and is limited to $100 per person (I call no cheating). Each winner will get a gift code that can be used on SparkFun within 60 days. There might be some slight modifications to the rules as time goes on, but don't fret - we will make any additional rules well-known prior to the big day.

The System: We're doing away with the quiz system of 2011 and trying to return to a give-away system that is as simple as possible, but can handle the load of the Free Day crowd. The system will randomly give away the 2,000 prizes (2000 * $100 = $200,000) through out the day. For example, if we set up a 7 hour giveaway window, we should see a gift given away about every 12 seconds. We will allow people to try for the prize as many times as they'd like, but we will have a basic system to prove you're not a script (sometimes robots can be bad).

Post if you get one! :)

edit: added its randomly allocated, your not guaranteed one.
edit2: didn't read the page properly myself! removed quiz. previous years were quiz based. They are just checking you are human!
edit3: timezone stuffup!

it looks like a competition. Please give some explanation if otherwise. I don't really get it.

EDIT: "Random Allocation" Random-ness = No Guarantee - Competition

  • just updated again.. not a quiz.. they just check you are human, and allocate based on time. but as the page says, they might change things.

    It starts thursday morning.
    Jan 11 9am MST = Jan 12 3am AEDT

    • Wow.. the backlash over it being a competition, when I screwed the date up.. classic. I'll fix the title!

Damn.. don't think I can now.

  • Its a competition. And the product you could win us$100 of is specialised electronic parts, prototyping boards, robotics parts, … not for everyone!
'Our products range from things like resistors and LEDs to humidity sensors and LCD screens,'
But shipping to Oz by mail on a $20 small light part was less than $4.

Bloody whingers! Who cares if it is a competition, its still FREE to enter to win something, I am happy it was posted because now I am aware of it as I am sure many others will be happy to have known about this. SO I say thankyou to the poster. There is no need to be so negative towards someone, just report it and dont post, simple as that

    • So which something do you want to win? Good if you protype with PICs, want to get into robotics, or muck around at a component level with sensors, etc.

Competitions are not bargains, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:deal_posting_guideline…, MOVED to forums

  • Sat there for an hour from 2:30am and no luck, was worth a shot though, might come back and try again in a few hours, but its approximately a 1 in 4000 chance of winning last time I looked

  • tried myself for a few hours this morning. got nothing!

  • did anyone from oz get anything? i tried but site kept crashing

  • In the end was a 1 in 3500 shot, but nothing for me. Woke up too late to try again. oh well, would have been good to get some Arduino stuff :(
