  • isnt there instructions online that show you how to use any hdd for xbox? (ie special formatter?) or was that only for the old ones…

i find it pretty discracefull that they sell HDDs for so much for such a small quantity compared to the regular price… IE a 1TB hdd goes for about 60-70 bux so 3 times the size at a smaller price.

Nice post OP, indeed very good timing with all the new 4GBs out there now!

I was just about to post these very same instructions anthman. If you're a little technically inclined, have all the prerequisite equipment, don't mind/enjoy the fiddling when using HDDHACKR and can pick up a cheap Western Digital drive from somewhere, it's well worth it.

I managed to find an 80GB WD drive on eBay for $32. 30 mins of my time and now I don't have to play Skyrim with a noise like "GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"

        [EDIT] Less Grrr. ;)

    These are 2.5" HDD's. You won't find a 1TB 2.5" for "60-70 bux"

You can make your own hard drives, but a 320gb one (they have to be Western Digital, whose prices are pretty high now with the recent floods) will set you back at least $90-$100 including the casing for the drive. So a genuine Microsoft drive + a game is a good deal, considering the convenience of not having to reformat the drive.

    -edit-

Not sure this actually comes with the game, but even so still a good deal

    • Spot on Glengood, henece the reason for my submission.

The cheapest non geniune on ebay at present are selling from $60-$70 for a 250GB without the buying confidence of OZ Gameshop.

    • I bought an 500Gb usb external imation drive from officeworks recently and cracked it open and used that in my xbox . Cost was $60 . Seems ridiculous that you pay less for a drive and an external housing with usb interface .

      • What prep did you have to do? Did you just chuck it in naked without the housing?

        • You don't strictly need the casing at all, its just peace of mind really, I used my formatted HDD fine for weeks before buying a case for it.

        • Caveat : my Xbox has a RGH mod . Case popped open with my hands . Put it straight into the xbox and used the xbox to format it . Just a word of warning though , Some external drives have the usb controller integrated into the drive . Never seen it myself but have read it . This was the deal I got http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/59983#comment-719083 .
Edit; No housing required , just packed it up with a bit of cardboard . Theres plenty of places such as dealextreme or focalprice where you can get a housing delivered for a few sheckles .
2nd Edit : I bought 2 of these and put the other drive into my laptop .

In the case of this poster his xbox was modded (JTAG/RGH) as you can't do what he described unless it's a Western Digital drive and you flash it's firmware (the drive he used is a Toshiba from memory)

So it's a bit hard to compare his $60 drive to an official drive

edit: bit slow on the post here

  • Can't see lego game as a freebie - or am I being a bit dim?

    • +1

me too, only thing i can see is a lego sticker on the HDD image perhaps its a free download rather than an actual disc

  • +1

Yeah it really annoys me that xbox have gone all apple forcing you to use their HDDs

you cant use a external past 16GB and even than cant store HD game content on them.

You cant just stick in any HDD too even though it has a sata port you have to use a hack program to make format it to the xbox and than that program will only work with a few WD hdds up to 250GB

ive got 5 or 6 spare 2.%s floating around none of them WD

anyway you can get cheapies from china but considering this is genuine it gets a thumbs up from me

Considering last deal was $119 from Fishpond as well as HDD pice hike, this is defn a bargain

Ah gotcha - lego game is downloadable with a redemption coupon

    • +1

And best of all, you don't need to deal with Fishpond, or wait 6 years for your order!

      • what - you got your Fishpond order?

        • No, I cancelled it and ordered this one instead!

Figured starting a brand new order from OzGameShop, waiting for them to get it in, and then ship it to me… will still be faster than waiting for Fishpond to fulfil my order. ;)

  • This may be a cheaper option ??? yes i know its not a 320 and looks like non genuine but still not a bad price
