It's now even better with a further 15% off all clearance knives.

To get the deal you must signup for their emails and then wait for the email with a link for a further 15% off -I believe this link is unique to each email address…

I purchased my knives on Friday last week and received them yesterday. I wish I had waited :(

The free chopping boards with the Wusthof knives are only about the size of a DVD case….

Nevertheless this is dirt cheap for quality knives.

  • So does that mean that this knife block set would come down to $169 or is it $199 after that 15% off?

    • $199 less 15% when you use the email discount link.

  • Not bad, I'm actually considering this set instead:
    http://www.cutleryandmore.com/wusthof-gourmet/premier-knife-…

With 15% off, the price comes down to $238.

Never bought a set of "quality" knives though so no idea how good Wusthof is. What are other similar or better brands out there?

Any thoughts on the particular set (wusthof gourmet - premier knife block set) I'm looking at?

I bought the Grand Prix 2 nine knife set.

My mate bought the 16 piece Henckels Professional set.

Both brands are good knives - see the other thread for more discussion.

Put it this way, the best knife I owned before this was a Mundial - which I think is really, really good.

I went to King of Knives in Sydney and asked the lady at the counter which was better, Mundial or Wusthof - she said that although both were good, there was no comparison as Wusthof was that much better than Mundial.

      • I'm going to show my dad thisI hope theyre still there when the email shows up. ^_^

I have Henckels Twin Cuisine and they are brilliant. Wusthof are supposed to be brilliant too.

My first suggestion is to get a much smaller set than the one you link to. Really just need a Chef's knife, Paring knife, bread knife and a sharpening steel / sharpener to start with. A lot of those huge sets, even from these good brands, are still just cheap stamped knives. A few quality, forged knives will do you much better and literally last a lifetime. My old man has a Henckels he bought over 30 years ago and it looks close to new.

Try this one plus any knife block and you will be stoked:

Then find some decent steak knives and a bread knife with the money you saved (if you need them).

    • Instead of the gourmet you should get the 18-piece silverpoint for $179.95 (before discount). The only difference is you get the grandprix "plastic" handle: http://www.cutleryandmore.com/wusthof-silverpoint-ii/knife-b…

  • Thanks guys.
The reason I'm looking at a bigger set is so that that i always have more than one knife available if the other is in the dishwasher or whatever. Right now we have 3 knives (very cheap knives) and at times all 3 happen to be in the dishwasher which we use once or twice a week while we are filling it up. This then results in having to take the it out of the dishwasher, wash it up and finally use it.
I'll have a look at the henckels as well.
Just wanted to know how well these brands are rated because whatever we buy now, we would like it to last us for a long time.

    • These are in theory dishwasher safe but they are not recommended to be used in a dishwasher - if you want them to last the maximum time, minimise washing them in the dishwasher…

      • I have to agree, no quality knives should be put in the dishwasher. Full stop. For the most part, good quality knives wipe clean in no time with a wet cloth with at most a small amout of dishwashing liquid. This is how knives should be looked after. It takes no more time than putting them in and taking them out of the dishwasher.

and…. don't keep them in the kitchen drawer….. buy a knife block if they don't already come in one.

    • sorry double post.

Do some research and get the best you can afford. My Felix Solingen Knives have lasted 21 years so far. Got a bit slack a few years back and put them in the dishwasher lots, now the rivets are corroding. Will need to get a knife maker to make some new handles for me before too long.

  • Hey all you knife gurus - is it OK to use the knife sharpening grinding wheel on the back of my electric can-opener on a good knife - or does it damage the knife?
