Wusthof Grand Prix II 7 Piece Knife Set with Block - $260 Inc. Delivery

250

Hi all,

I have been in the market for a starter knife set recently, and stumbled on Cutlery and More's clearance of a 7-piece Wusthof Grand Prix II knife set. Set is priced at $199.95 + $60 Postage to Australia (US website).

Includes the following:
3.5-inch Paring Knife
4.5-inch Utility Knife
8-inch Bread Knife
8-inch Chef's Knife
9-inch Sharpening Steel
9-slot Hardwood Knife Block
Come-Apart Kitchen Shears
Bonus Wusthof 2-stage knife sharpener (included in shipment if you spend over $149 on Wusthof knives)
Bonus Wusthof chopping board (included in shipment if you spend over $149 on Wusthof knives)

For those unfamiliar with knives, Wusthof are often regarded as some of the best out there. A set like this should not only get you off the ground with pretty much any knife situation in the kitchen, but hopefully last you many, many years to boot. These are not as famous as the Wusthof Classic or Classic Ikon range (used by chefs like Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsey, etc), but from what I can tell on my travels through the internet are still very highly regarded.

Amazon 7-piece Wusthof Grand Prix II knife set on amazon (amazon has same price, but no shipping to AUS. Might be able to wangle a slightly better deal on postage if you went through a US forwarder):

Amazon 8-piece Wusthof Grand Prix II knife set (not the same clearance set as includes an extra knife, but I've posted here because it has a few reviews attached to it).

As for Aussie retailers, Peters of Kensington, Home Depot and a few others have the 8-piece block set listed for just under $500:

While I think this is a competitive deal, my advice before you buy is to try and find a shop where you can "test" the knife out first. I was pretty much set on getting a set of Global knives (Japanese knives with a reputation similar to Wusthof), but after actually trying came to the realisation that the handle was a little small and the knife was a little too light for my liking. Others may love that though, so you will never know until you try….

Also check out the other clearance items on Cutlery and More's page, heaps going for Wusthof including the 9-piece Grand Prix II knife block set:

  • Great deal. If I didn't already have good knives I'd nab these.

  • +3

Every now an then King of Knives have a special where the Classic 7 piece goes on sale for $300 - most recent one was last month.

    • +1

The Classic set doesn't compare to the Grand Prix II set for quality.

  • mmmmm, i don't know what to do. I too am in the market for a starter knife set. I don't know if i should go for this or wait for a Mundial set deal. I know for a fact that Wusthof are better quality than Mundial however maybe the price outweighs the (probably slight) quality drop? Or maybe being as these Wusthof Grand Prix II knives are not their top line there somehow isn't much difference between the two as far as quality / steel grade / durablity?

Mundial… chef quality, 5 knives, full tang, local delivery/warranty $155 (inc delivery)
Wusthof… chef quality, 5 knives, not full tang, overseas delivery/warranty, extra bonuses $260 (inc delivery)

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mundial-9-Piece-Bonza-Knife-Block…

    • You're better off with one good knife that 5 mediocre ones. If you want to save money, get an individual knife or two of a higher quality.

      • Mundial are not mediocre, never have been

    • Hi fiagrow,
My family has used Munidals for the past 10 years in our kitchen, and I am sure you would be happy with them. I also had them as a consideration on my list, but in the end I went with the Wusthof's at that clearance price.

As for the Wusthof Grand Prix II, the blade is exactly the same as the Wusthof Classic. The only difference is the shape and make of the handle.

    • The Wusthof classic is full tang:
      http://www.cutleryandmore.com/wusthof-classic/deluxe-knife-b…

This is the set that I bought about a year ago, very happy with it.

I recommend that you go to a local shop and touch/hold the knives.

  • wish we can get same price here ouright

  • Great Find

  • Excellent knives. Had mine for 20 years, still going strong

  • Good find.

  • While we're talking about knives, I was looking at king of knives the other day & they had 2 9 pc sets going for $199: one Bismarck ( http://www.kingofknives.com/Cutlery/Kitchen-Knives/Block-Set…) & the other Brasilia ( http://www.kingofknives.com/Cutlery/Kitchen-Knives/Block-Set…). looked and felt solid, but there's almost zilch on the www about them. Anyone had experience??

Before people run out and buy a whole lot of knives they don't need, I found that the Victorinox knives incredibly good value, they are almost as sharp as my Global knives, keep their edge very well, can take a lot of abuse and they cost just a fraction of an equivilant forged knife. A paring knife will set you back $4 for example -
    http://www.petersofkensington.com.au/Public/catalog/searchre…

Also the handles have incredibly good grips, you can have a hand covered in chicken fat and still hold the knife well.

Having said that, this is a great deal for anyone who wants a set of knives.

    • Yep it's true, used a rosewood Victorinox chef knife for years and it was great. Try to get your hands on the Forschner range of Victorinox if you can which are very high end quality and have good reviews.

  • Anyone want to comment how Wusthof compares to global knives? Anything different with the performance of the cutting blade, or is it really all down to personal preference of the handle?

    • It's a cut above the rest. But seriously the quality is very good, my mother's had hers for 25 years and hence why I've ended up buying one when it was on special. Like others have suggested, you should go try them out first because some people don't like the heavier set.

I tried the Global 8" chef's knife before settling on the Wusthof. Far be it from the Global's being a bad knife (they're hugely popular I've deduced from my research on the internet), I just felt the Wusthof's were personally better suited. Although I must stress I reached this decision by going in-store and trying both types of knife!

My thoughts: The Global just felt TOO light. I don't know, but for some reason I felt that the Wusthof's were more balanced because of the way the weight of the knife felt in my hand. I really liked the grip on the Globals though, but it was just too small for my hands.

I've no doubt the Global is sharp and will stay sharp (wasn't really allowed to go off and cut anything with the one I tested you see haha). But you won't know though basically until you go into a store and physically pick up both knives for yourself.

Some fundamental differences in design though are:
      1. The Bolster (the bevelled, lumpy bit between the blade and handle, which is designed to protect your finger) - The Wusthof has a more "out dated" full bolster, which apparently over time makes it hard to keep the very end of the knife sharp. If you look at a Global though, it has a tapered bolster - means it's easier to keep 100% of the blade sharp as you can run the sharpening steel the entire length of the blade.

      1. The Handle - The Global handle is made entirely from steel. Lots of people like this and it looks great, but a few were concerned that it wasn't as easy to use when their hands were wet. Concerningly, a high number of people have also said that their Global knives have literally snapped in two after use or a fall… Hard to say whether they've just treated them badly or there is something bigger at play. http://www.amazon.com/Global-G-2-8-Inch-Cooks-Knife/product-…
    • Bottom line: unless you're a pro or a knife-enthusiast, you won't be unhappy with the performance of either - they both make excellent knives that cut beautifully. (I own both Globals and Wusthofs)
So yes, it's down to personal preference, mainly of the handle & weight.
If you're an enthusiast, you've already googled the general differences between asian (Global) and western (most Wusthof) knife styles, alloys, bevel angles and the difference that makes to sharpening. But if you just want a good quality knife that cuts beautifully and lasts well the most important thing is to walk into a store and try handling both and see which you prefer. AND THEN LEARN HOW TO LOOK AFTER THEM so they're not destroyed within a month of bringing them home. eg http://www.asweetpeachef.com/cooking-101/cooking-101-proper-… [sorry, rant over]

      Handles:
      - Global: ergonomic metal 'push-cut' style handle, smaller handles not so great for big hands if using for long periods
      - Wusthof: their money-makers still use traditional handles, bigger, heavier, possibly more forgiving of poor cutting technique (thick heel & curved handle 'tail')

Weight: Globals are lighter (unless you have Wusthof Cordon Bleus)

IMHO a knife can never be too light, it feels more like an extension of your hand, which typifies the asian knife philosophy (aside from the cleavers for heavy work). Some people prefer the typical heavier western knife which feels like a capable tool, a piece of finely-balanced machinery that you work with. If you're a petite elderly female cooking for a family of 8 perhaps avoid the heavier knives; a 12" full-tang, thick-bolstered, heavy-heeled chefs knife can really give you a work-out.

  • Wusthof, made in Solingen, Germany. 'Nuff Said. These will last you decades.

I have a 5-piece, Custom Classic Set with block and the way to describe them is, MENACINGLY sharp.
Definitely something you want to keep away from your grubby kid's hands.

  • I went to King of Knives and asked them how much better Wusthof was then Mundial (I have a Mundial I love) - they said there was no comparison, Wusthof hands down a better knife…

Must say I am not a fan of the handles on the Grand Prix - much prefer the classic look

Umm do the bonus knife sharpener and chopping board still come - bonus supposed to end 31/12/2011

    • Sounds like the sharpener and chopping board offer have expired

    • It now says the bonus ends 31/3/2012 they must have updated it

  • My experience is that bargain shop knives ("as seen on TV" etc) or any other knife with really thin blades are about $2 each and remain sharp and cut well for about 12 months after which you can sharpen and extend another 6 months or so before replacing them.

Conversely though, heavier and "better quality" ($15 each?) knives seem to require sharpening every month and even then don't slice through as easily.

So I'm presuming that these sort of knives above ($30 each) are somehow better overall? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the heads up, was looking for some in the sales, just ordered mine and it came with the chopping board & sharpner on the checkout page, so assume they are coming.

    great find

  • I am actually thinking of getting this set

    http://www.cutleryandmore.com/wusthof-silverpoint-ii/knife-b…

Can anyone explain the differences between the grand prix, silverpoint and classic - is it just the handles or is there more to it?

    • I too am looking at that set. A lot more knives for the same price and 65% off its usual RRP. I actually prefer this set because we use knives like steak knives and utility knives most of the time.
Just don't understand why we get so much more with this set compared to the Grand Prix II set for less money. I don't know much about knives and this is the first time I'm looking at spending more than $50 on knives (we paid $14 for our current set).
As far as i can tell the knives look very similar if not the same and the handle is identical too.

  • Thanks OP we just purchased a set, let's hope it still comes with the free chopping board and sharpener =)

  • +1

Actually looks like they have now updated the bonus chopping board and sharpener deal to show it expires 31/3/12

  • Been working in hospitality for 7 years I can guarantee that doesn't matter what you buy from Wusthof it's always top quality.

I called a couple of shops in Perth and the closest one you can get is 8pce for….$599 just my 2c worth

    http://www.everten.com.au/wusthof-trident-Grand-Prix-2-8pc-b…

P.S. Buy the way I both the one from US ;-)

  • My 9 piece Wusthof set arrived today along with my work colleagues 18 piece Henckels

    We are both very happy…

    Thanks OP

  • 15% extra off on all clearance knives if you are an email subscriber to Cutlery and More - bugger I've already bought

  • This has now got me thinking. So 15% off brings the price down to $221. For that i get the following:

    3.5-inch Paring Knife
    4.5-inch Utility Knife
8-inch Bread Knife - could use, but don't really need
    8-inch Chef's Knife
9-inch Sharpening Steel - Do Not need
9-slot Hardwood Knife Block - Do Not need
Come-Apart Kitchen Shears - could use, but don't really need
Knife Sharpener - could use, but don't really need
Cutting Board - could use, but don't really need

I am in the market for 3 knives, a small chef knife, utility knife & paring knife.

I already own a 10 inch Victorinox chef knife which i love. I am very pleased with Victorinox and have used them for many years in commercial kitchens. I was going to spend around $60 to get my 3 other knives, see here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61458

So my problem now is this deal lol. Do i fork out the extra $161 to get this deal with the added quality & extras that i don't really need or save the money and get the Victorinox knives? I know these Wusthof's are better quality then the Victorinox being that these are forged and the brand is better etc. But what do i do?

On a side note is it possible to get these Wusthof knives cheaper individually without the block etc?

    mmmmmm, decisions decisions?

    • How do u get the extra 15% off? Im on their email subsciber list but cant see where the discout applies on checkout. Do u get 15% off the delivery as well?

      • 2 days after joining there subscriber list, I received an e-mail which said "An Extra 15% off all Clearance Items when you shop through this e-mail"; it included a link back to their website, so I used that link to buy this set, and got the 15% off.

        The link was:
