Do ebikes generally have regenerative braking?

    • No…

    • -1

No. None of them too. Too much weight to add to the bike.

      • +2

Some e-bikes do have regen braking. Any that have direct drive hub motors will typically offer this feature. Here is an article from Rad Power Bikes which talks about their models with regen braking: https://radpowerbikes.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/36004517…

        • I stand corrected! That's definitely the most German thing I've seen today.

It took 10 minutes of digging to find these bikes have a weight limit of 100kg. Does anyone know of a bike that has a weight limit of 115kg or more? My partner is 100-105kg so I’d be nervous getting the Aldi one.

    • +1

I'm 121kg and I will be buying this Aldi e-bike.
It's my incentive to lose weight.
Otherwise, I would have just wasted a thousand bux.

Should be fine unless you're hitting bumps at speed. Cheap bikes come with cheap wheels so watch out. I'm close to 100 kgs and flipped over at low speed. I completely buckled my rim. It was a low-end mountain bike rim from an okay brand.
Another problem with e-bikes, especially cheaper ones is that they get punctures in the back wheel because most of the weight is distributed there.

      • they get punctures in the back wheel because most of the weight is distributed there.

this happened to me within 2-3 weeks of getting my ebike. i made the noob mistake of not checking my tyre pressures regularly enough.

      • Oh yeah was supposed to mention that I flipped over due to my own doing and it wasn't the bike's fault. It was slower than walking pace when I unbalanced and ended up flipping by jerking the handlebar straight to the left. Ejected myself forward and over the handlebars lol. Apologies for the scare.
A decent low end mountain bike should not fail on you unless you have an accident or abuse it (give it some airtime) if you are >100kg.

    • The weight limit is primarily an issue for wheels. You could get better wheels and tyres with a higher weight limit and that would give you a better riding experience.

  • The e-bike has a v-brake…is that sufficient for breaking a heavy e-bike going at faster speeds? Just want honest opinions.

Consider that a normal bike may weigh 15kg, you could load up panniers on it (my tourer has carried full loads on front and rear panniers - maybe 30kg+ when shopping and buying a case of beer), you could add a child seat and child, and then you add yourself. The extra weight (or speed) of the ebike is not really the determining factor.

But I get multi-compound and longer v-brake pads, have decent rims, and ensure they are adjusted. Work fine in the wet. Problems may arise with mud or oil, which affects the rims more than a disc, obviously. I wouldn't ride this on muddy trails and avoid deep puddles, so V-brakes should be fine (if set up correctly with decent pads).

  • I got a folding abus lock and it saved my MTB 2x from junkies. lost the front wheel both times though. the lock is in pretty bad shape now, but I keep using it since my bike is not shiny anymore - at least compared to the 5k+ electric ones that are the thing these days.

That phone holder is absolutely useless.
I bought one last time planning to use it while on the indoor trainer and it's not even useful for that.
It doesn't fit around 'normal' handlebars, doesn't fit a reasonably sized phone, and even with a small phone it doesn't feel secure

    • +1

my current phone holder is mutant combo of:
      * go pro-style bar mount that came with an "action cam" from the reject shop
      * a joby phone holder i had lying around
      * if rain is forecast, a plastic resealable snack bag.

i'm still hunting down the perfect weather-proof holder for my xiaomi mi4 but it's hard to find even a decent case for it

      • Just get a waterproof phone, so you don't need a weatherproof case.

        • +3

i have a feeling those would cost more money than a $2.60 pack of plastic snack bags..

          • @tdw: Well I guess next time you buy a new phone, just get a water resistant one. I tried using a weaterproof case when I was in Amsterdam but I gave up as I couldn't find one to fit my phone properly, and it's just annoying to use if I need to change the map or something while riding.

      THANK YOU.
Glad I'm not the only one who realized this from the previous sales.

  • 7.5Ah lithium battery

not if you intended to ride it even somewhat regularly…

might get the floor pump though

Be better of with a baofang crank motor conversion from Ali express

    • Bafang

      • +1

Thats the one… unless you get the rip off version…

  • +2

This is disappointing, I was waiting for the 2021 version of the Aldi 29 inch mountain bike which is a very good bike at a remarkably good price.

Instead we got a pretty crap eBike which is rather expensive compared to elsewhere.

Great more bikes on the roads causing every single accident (proof is in the dash cam)

  • Use a D lock from kryptonyte and use a padlock for the spokes or disc brake locks, that should be enough hassle for a thief.

  • Might have to get one of those memory foam seat covers.

The real deal that day is the $12.99 floor pump

    • Did you buy one? Wondering what the quality is like?

  • +2

Can anyone please comment on how the rechargeable compressor is if they bought it before?

  • Bunnings have dropped their dual action bike floor pump from $24 to $12.99 to match the aldi one. Not sure which is better, Bunnings one is craftwright which is typically pretty sh** but has a shorter wider air chamber compared to Aldi's offering.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/craftright-dual-action-high-volu…

reviews are really bad for the bunnings one!

  • anyone buy the Rechargeable Compressor previously? worth it for the price?

  • 2 25cc chainsaws at my local and none of the larger ones or log splitters.
