Don't You Hate It When Staff Pretend to Look for Your Item and Say Its Sold out

The lady at my local Target Warringah Mall told me "Pokemon Cards are sold out and not for reorder" when I didn't even tell her what Pokemon cards I was after. When I asked for other stores stock, not only did she not take time to check she also told me "All stores must be sold out Pokemon Cards are not returning hits on our system". Then she followed with "No, sorry Pokemon Cards will not be replenished". If you are not willing or don't know how to check for me just say so, don't pull this nonsense. Not only are you lying to my face, you expect to believe Pokemon cards are no longer being sold at Target. I can still see the Pokemon Cards listings on Target, and can see stock in Kotara and like 5 other stores.

    • It is why shows like little B is so popular, it happens to a lot of people and not just to op. The only thing we can do is to rant or laugh about it from a third person perspective or find another person in target at another store, if you are lucky, you will find someone who cares and love their job.

      • on the odd occasion you meet workers that OFFER to go out the back theirself

Do you want me to give you a pokeman card to cry on?

    • +34

Yes Charizard Set 1 Thanks PSA 9 or higher, don't bother me unless its Mint.

      • Should have asked for first edition or shadowless, unlimited and 4th print of set 1 are not even worth that much.

        • How much does a regular Charizard card sell for?
          Asking for a friend…

          • @Kangal: Charizard Holo First edition in 10 Beckett grading $300,000

@[Deactivated]: I had one in good condition (not pristine), similar to this one.

Don't know why, but went crazy for it when I was a kid, even had a 151 poster. A big problem back then were all these, very obvious, fake cards that were doing the rounds. I even had a couple of them for novelty, or used them as "spare change" when trading with others. Never actually "played" the game, only used them to collect them, chat with strangers, buy new packs, and trade it with others. I remember swapping a Dragonair to someone so they could have the D-D-D group, and in return, I got an Arcanine for it (sought after) and a Gyarados (very common) back then. Didn't have many cards, or even good ones… too poor, but I remember this one kid back in school who had heaps and good ones too, he was a rich bich tho. Churchies were saying that P-cards were the devils tools to control the minds of children. Eventually my mum tossed my collection out into rubbish.

              • @Kangal: Depends on which release. A first edition Charizard PSA 10 sold recently for like $300k but those are stupidly hard to come by.

                A shadowless Charizard PSA 10 could sell for like $9k - $13k

An unlimited set Charizard PSA 10 was going for like $600 but with the current hype because the newspapers mentioned the 1st edition sale I have seen it at like $1.5k - $3k but I don't think you'd find any buyers at that price.

Base set 2 basically never sell at least not for high you'll see tons of them available for high numbers but no sales at those amounts

Legendary collection Charizard PSA 10 sells for like $2k-$7k

I don't know if they ran any more sets of the original Charizard but at the moment prices are super inflated because everyones thinking they can make a cool 300k after the recent news story. Plus for anyone to buy it you have to have it PSA graded and get at least an 8

So? They probably still have stock, until sold out.

Children still play Pokemon? How cute

    • +3

Surpassingly enough most kids are not into Pokémon cards, they are more interested in the electronic side of games. The same thing happened with dungeons and dragons and other board games, they have become dominated by the adult consumer.

    • +5

I wouldn't be surprised if there are more adults collecting pokemon cards these days.

      • Lol some dude on ebay was trying to sell his pikachu world collection on ebay for around $400 bucks…. I was like sure….. if that's the case I have some cards to sell….

At best you're going to get someone to check the storeroom, which you couldn't verify anyway. So pretending to look on the computer probably saves you time.

Target Warringah Mall is closing down and becoming a Kmart, they will not be restocking anything.

    • -3

Haha didn't know that but Kmart will sell Pokemon cards in the future

      • +3

But they wont restock until the shop is fitted out, no sense in holding stock for months while not being sold.

  • +26

I used to do this when working retail and when I advised something was out of stock, they would ask if I could check out the back. Despite me knowing that there is no stock out the back, I would just go back there for 5 mins and chill before coming out and saying, nup no stock.

    • +2

Netflix and chill or just chill?

This was in the days when we only had 3G on our phones and not 4G. I would say it was probably light Facebook browsing..

        • +2

ouch, my phone switches to 3g on a rare occasion on the train from the city….cant even use ozbargain or reddit when that happens :(

          • @Forfiet: 3g isn't that slow, definitely fast enough for web browsing and youtube at high quality.

it's coincidence - if poor reception causes 4g to drop out, you are trying to use 3g with no reception either.

      Devil in the details tho,

Did you tell/ask the lady about this then and there? She might be able to see something on the computer that you couldn't. More importantly, her answer or explanation might have saved you from walking away angry/annoyed/frustrated.

Or did you just decide it's better to go home and whinge about it on an online forum?

    • Didn't check the stock levels on online listing till 10 minutes after.

  • I thought all Targets were closing down and becoming Kmarts. if that's correct then I guess she would be correct in that they aren't ordering anymore stock as they will cease as 'Target' soon.

    • Yup I'll buy them from Kmart when the reopen

    • According to Wesfarmers' public annoucements, not all Target stores are being converted to Kmarts. As a rule of thumb, if a shopping centre already has a Kmart and a Target, then no conversion will be done.

It's already been pointed out that OPs Warringah store is on the list for conversion to Kmart in 2021.

I guess she would be correct in that they aren't ordering anymore stock as they will cease as 'Target' soon.

It's still poor customer service not to reveal the reason and suggest that all Target stores are in the same boat. However poort customer service is to be expected when people are worried about losing their jobs. In my experience of large companies people on the ground are usually kept in the dark by management for as long as possible and that creates anxiety.

  • Since Pokemon cards have become 'valuable' they have become a lot more difficult to find

I bet you are a delight to have in store. Maybe she was just sick of your shit attitude and it was her subtle way of telling you she is no longer interested in helping you.

    • Bet OPs never worked retail and dealt with people like them day after day after day.

      • This is what I don't get. Treat people as you would have them treat you if they walked into your place of employment.

Had a woman a few weeks ago yell at me and go apeshit at my place of employment. An absolute Karen. A few days later I saw her in her job and decided to return in kind.

    if you can see them online then why dont you;

    order them online?
order them online for click and collect?

or by far your best bet:

drive to all the stores you can see have stock ,
walk to the aisle where they are,
look with your eyes and see if there are any there,
(then if they're behind a locked counter or something ask nearest staff to open it),
pick them up in your hand,
    walk to the checkout

  • -2

I am going to assume you're an adult . The member of staff did you a favour. No adult should be buying Pokemon cards.

    • -3

You might want to google the value of some of the older cards….

      they can be good investments

i collected them as a kid but i still get a few as an adult due to the shear fact (rare cards) appreciate in value - also when you get one can be a bit nostalgic

      https://www.one37pm.com/culture/trading-cards/expensive-poke…

I literally know people who buy and sell these cards as a side hustle making a killing - who is buying them at a premium IDK but it is happening

  • This is a reason why Nintendo still makes $$$$…

  • so why not buy them via the website of you can still see them there?

    • Its for click and collect only, you have to drive to pick it up for me 250km

      • +1

how badly do you want it?

    Short answer - Yes
Long answer - I asked a staff member at BCF where I could find proper fishing gloves… she said I don't think we currently have any other than the open/fingerless ones over there and pointed… there was like two out of place gloves on a special end of aisle hook/rack thing between some other products within eyesight, not what I was after.
I wandered around a bit browsing (seen as I'd made a special trip 15 mins to get there for no reason apparently)… then on the way back around the store walked past the 3-4m long full rack of glove options, probably ~50 pairs of gloves - including about 6 versions that met what I was after. I was dismayed how you could work there and not know such a large rack existed in a store that 1/3rd of its business is fishing. I wondered if they were really that oblivious or just being a d!ck because it was apparently so obvious I shouldn't have had to ask (despite the fact I hadn't walked into that part of the store at all yet). Either way, bad customer service. She couldn't work at Bunnings!

  • My only issue i have is when i check online they say they have it 'instock' but it is buy 'in-store only' and I get to a place and it is out of stock!

Pokemon cards are terrible for this - im looking at you Target!

Otherwise my expectation of 'staff' is pretty low, i used to work in retail and tbh you dont get paid extra for busting your ass for customers this isnt the US you dont get tips or bonuses for selling more stock - ill do the min required and 'check the back' but outside of that i got other tasks my under paying job expects me to do - unless you're job is specifically sales related i appreciate the helpful works but i dont hate on the ones that are less so - most of the floor staff are hired to fill selves it isn't like a cloth shop when there job is to try sell more cloths

What a mean lady saying they have no pokie cards! Did your mummy make you special chickie tendies to make you feel better?

    • LOL

You do realise it is rare to have something empty on the shelf yet sitting in the back and easy to access. They have workers running excess stock everyday.
If it is in the back area, it will be a fresh delivery off a truck hidden somewhere on one of 10, 20 maybe more pallets.
With the limited space in the dock, the worker may only have 3 pallets within reach. Then come the entire the OH&S issue with how sometimes these pallets are packed very poorly. The stock will collapse onto the floor if you try to rummage through it.

I remember various staff members would go out the back and scratch their ass for 1 minute before coming back to the customer telling them they couldn't find the item. The reason they did this is because they know what is out the back, they work with this stock everyday. They do gap scans everyday and try to fill the shelf with what overstocked items they have out the back. Then you have a customer that doesn't believe it when you say there is no stock. They assume the customer to get them off their back.

There is a very small chance the item is sitting out the back if it is not on the shelf. It will most likely be in the middle of a massive pallet if it is.

Some info on Pokemon cards at Target in general, because this post triggered me lol. (I've worked for quite a long time and am someone who will actually check for stock if a customer came in and asked me).

    1. If you went to a store that's swapping to Kmart, new stock is getting redirected to stores that aren't closing down.

    2. When we do recieve Pokemon cards, at least where I work, they go straight to the floor, there isn't any situation we keep them in the back cause they sell way too quickly. We don't receive a ton when we do get them in so they sell out in a day or two usually.

    3. On the website it's either 'In stock', 'Limited Stock' or 'No stock'. If the store you're looking in appears 'No Stock' or 'Limited Stock' stores, most likely sold out. Stock also doesn't update immediately, sometimes takes a day or two.

    4. The count of stock does not take into consideration of stolen pokemon cards. A ton get stolen. Usually, when I'm cleaning each day I always find empty Pokemon packaging throughout the store, when we have recently had them in stock.

Also, I'm going to just say this. If you had to ask me if there is stock in the back for a toy, I would be able to tell you at the top of my head if it is sold out or not. If there's a slight possibility there might be excess in the reserve, I'll have a check. Some people that work in retail, like me, can legit give you that answer. It's not laziness, I just know how to do my job very well.

The best thing to do when looking for a product in VERY high demand is to ring the store first, if they have it they will tell you, and you can ask to put it on hold for a day or two.

If you can't get through when trying to ring, it's because we are serving a customer. Best time to try is at non-peak time usually 6-7pm or just as they open in the morning.

Always remember, the nicer you are to retail assistants, the more likely they will go out of their way to help you. We get no benefit in helping out difficult customers.

I hope you find your Pokemon cards soon!

  • +4

Used to work at Coles stocking shelves in high school and uni.

Always either could tell right away whether we had stock or not (excess stock stored on top of shelves) or was 95% sure whether we had stock out the back or not. So would be able to basically tell people straight away if we would have stock.

Customers would always not believe me and say "Can you check out the back".

So I would go out the back… Go to the bathroom, maybe have a snack, and then walk back out and say "Apologies but I have checked and we do not have that in stock"

    Good times.

  • Friends store stocks Pokemon card (not Target but another big brand), Pokemon cards are on massive backorder for everyone atm due to the pandemic, it's insanely hard to get them from the suppliers, they are still waiting on orders from November.

Not saying the Target person was right, but they would know this as well and probably been asked so many times it's just become habit and would have known for sure if they had any.

  • +1

My daughter lost something, possibly in a K-Mart store. At the service counter at the back of the store they dryly "called upstairs" to check if anything had been handed in.

There is no upstairs at that store.

    • -1

How do you know? Have you personally been to the back of house where there might be a mezzanine to see for yourself?

  • I used to work in the toy section during my uni days @ target. Yes, we would just go out back wander around and then come out and say it's out.

  • It could be worse. It could be an apple store where you ask for a widget in red and they say ‘certainly, follow me’ and then proceed to walk you over to widgets and say something like ‘here are the colours of widgets we have in store today’ rather than saying ‘soz, we’re all out’ and not wasting your time.
