JB Hi-Fi Declined Return of Iron - Any Ideas Besides Gumtree/Marketplace?

TL;DR Unable to return unopened, unwanted gift to JB Hi-Fi as they state it has been previously opened.

Took an unwanted, unopened steam iron back to JB Hi-Fi with receipt and staff proceeded to open the rather easy to open, unsealed, box in front of me. The iron had condensation inside the water tank and a slight smudge on the water inlet. Was declined refund as "we are not a second hand store and thus don't hold the licence to resell this item". Sad to lose out on over $100 because a previously opened item was purchased.

    Any ideas besides gumtree/marketplace?

Use it to iron your clothes? If not, what are you going to tell the person who gave it to you?

    Regift it

That’s probably what happened to OP. ( after it was used ).

Well you didn't spend the money to buy it so no actual loss.

  • sell or regift.

you should have opened the iron and wiped up the condensation before returning it. sometimes devices are tested before packaged for sale as new (my bissell cleaner had the same and there was a note in the box saying not to panic - i panicked)

    lesson learnt.

jbhifi are (profanity) for returns sometimes eg. i returned a sealed samsung phone and there was a minor scuff mark on the seal (i didn't make) and the manager (yes, manager!) tried to claim it was opened (looking for any reason to reject the return). i stood tall on my hind male legs and started beating my hairy chest. it's the only language these employees understand sometimes.

Well, no, the consumer is (profanity) for assuming any item they might longer want can be returned. There’s a real sense of entitlement going around, and no store is required by any law to give a refund for change of mind.

      • "Well,no, some consumers are (profanity) etc"…………….fixed.

  • The iron could also have been a previous return as it wasn't working properly and the store may have placed it back onto the shelf for sale in error instead of sending it back to the manufacturer.

Purchased a kettle years ago and the salesperson opened the box in front of us to confirm the contents and we noticed water condensation inside the water tank. Salesperson was surprised and then offered the above as an explanation for what could have happened.

    • may have placed it back onto the shelf for sale in error

yeah right… I reckon JB do this all the time (sell returned goods as new).

      • All stores can sell returned goods as long as they're in a saleable condition.

Yes but they are not allowed to sell used goods as new. They have to sell them as returned goods. There have been a long standing allegations that stores (including JB, HN and others) actively repackage goods to look new - going as far as having a shrink-wrapping machine out back.

          • @lunchbox99: Ahhh never knew that any returned goods are not allowed to be sold as new when it is unopened.

            • @Succulent: I think if they are unopened and unused it's probably fine.

OPs iron sounds like it has been used. I guess if OP is adamant they didn't use it, maybe it was a used return when they bought it "new".

          • @lunchbox99: So scammy!

            Thanks - good to know.

I'd have been adamant it wasn't used and was sold to you in that condition. I'm sure an argument of some sort would ensue…

If it's a Philips and was purchased this year, can you use the "90 day money back guarantee"? Fill out the form, say you're not happy with it for whatever reason and send it back. Only be out of pocket the postage cost then. If it's not, then clean it up and get someone else to try and return it?

    • OP has no way of knowing if the person who gave it to him used it or not.

      • Gifter could have regifted themselves after one or two uses. "Still looks new" they think as they wrap it

        • Plot twist: The gifter could have received a it as a gift from someone else, and the previous gifter might be the one who uses them one or two times.

          • @Succulent: Who are these people gifting irons?! Why?

            • @Hybroid: Probably a wedding present.

            • @Hybroid: STRIKE! While the iron is still hot……

I think maybe you should just wipe off the condensation in the tank and take it to another JB to return since you haven't used it.
Bought a steamer a while back from JB and it had some condensation in the tank but the user manual mentioned that it is normal and it is from the testing in the factory.
