    Oils ain't oils

  • $26.90 in current catalogue that ends 22 Jan.
$22.50 online but at bottom of page… "Prices displayed are online only. Please check with local store for pricing and availability." http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Castr…
Could be worth calling your local to see what price they are selling it for.
No end date for the online oil special.

Horrid s**t in my opinion! I regret ever using it.

    • Why do you saw say that?

      • -5

Gums everything up in my opinion, especially on older cars. Restricts oil flow because of this etc.

        • +5

Any proof of this? I doubt your opinion. It meets the latest API and ACEA standards. Its no homebrand oil and is their best mineral oil Castrol make.

        • bendertiger, what oil do you use?, just wondering cause my car is old too (1967). cheers.

        • I just use genuine Nissan 5-30w usually. 1967 is a different kettle of fish. My car is a 1986 Japanese Skyline. I assume yours is american? I'd be looking to see what the forums recommend for yours.

I would not use this oil in old wrecks. You must use thicker oil in them.

As for Magnatec gumming up an engine… what utter rot!!

What would have gummed up your engine is using bad /cheap oil in the past and leaving it in there for far too long..

        • Restricts oil flow - one of the funniest things I've read for a long while. Reminds me of the mechanic who changed the oil in my wife's Mazda 323 despite being told not to. His comment - "it was unsuitable 'light' rubbish." In fact it was high quality Castrol mineral oil as specified in the vehicle handbook. Castrol has a guide on its website if you're worried about suitability.

I know a lot of you guys are bagging out bendertiger…. but please google "magnatec" and "sludge". It's reported on a lot of different forums (even my favourite, whirlpool) with people reporting sludge issues after using Magnatec (and that's not exceeding the normal service period).

No idea if it really has a sludge problem, but I've read about it a fair bit in a few forums!

I used to use Magnatec but it caused a ticking in my lifters, switched to Penrite HPR10 (10W50) and the ticking stopped. Haven't touched it since.

        • The internet is full of crap and half-baked opinions Webbie. Sludge is 'almost' always the result of poor maintenance practices - mixing mineral and syn oils, infrequent filter and oil changes, overheating etc. You think Castrol would run the risk of ruining its reputation by putting out a rubbish product?

        • +1

"poor maintenance practices - mixing mineral and syn oils"
where do the semi syn oils come from? -dura"blend"…this magnatec and many others

        • +1

          Lol

And where do you get this NISSAN 5/30w special oil from?? Lol

Do you import it straight from japan??

      • Do not use this in a recent (less than 10 year old) BMW. It will leave you with a very expensive bill after it gums up everything as stated by bendertiger. Cost me over $3000 to get this stuff cleaned out of my E90 after Kmart put it in. And, the addition pressure means rocker cover seals, sump gasket and vacuum pump seal all leak.

        • I think it goes without saying check your manual for approved oils and ideally give it an authorised service agent who will put it into your car or tell you if it's not suitable.

    • Ahh I was gonna go get one, now this review is making me think otherwise!

Would this be good for a 15yo corolla?

      • +3

Yes perfectly fine. Magnatec is far better than most oils that were available at the time.

      • -1

Best oil going for the money. Ignore the rant above.
I have used this in cars for the past 15 years and found nothing else comes near it in the price range.

where have the 29.95 5w-30 edge sport deals gone? they were great deals

    • Edge Sport has been discontinued and replaced with Edge Titanium which is on 'sale' around $68~ at SCA.

      • they prolly replaced it, because people like me camped for those $30 specials and then "brodened" enough till the next sale. lol

        • hehe, same here. last sale was yonks ago though and im all out now. what u using now? nothing comes close on price for full syn.

  • -1

I only use "Nulon Full Synthetic 0W-40 High Performance Engine Oil"

    • +2

.. and i just had my valve caps gold plated… :-(

  • How would you compare this one against Penrite Oil?

    • Depends on what you are using it in Prav.
For the average motorist and the average car using anything higher spec than Castrol Magnatec 10-40 is just throwing money in the bin.
My last car was a V6 that I drove for 10 years in all conditions and the motor was "as new" when I sold it. Sludge was nil existent.
I use it in both my new cars and would not use anything else.
I have tried the Shell and Valvoline brands but they just don't seem to be as good.

      • +2

        Mazda 6

        • Excellent for this Prav. My new cars are both hi tech 4cys and they love it.

That deal was 395 days ago, was that the last time that you changed the oil?

  • Supercheap auto here I come :)

    Thx for the post OP

  • Is this oil good for a 7 yrs old Corolla and 20 yrs old Accord ??

    • 7 year old Corolla yes. 20 year old Accord? Possibly, but check to see if your engine is burning oil. An engine that old may need a slightly thicker viscosity oil.

  • Using an average oil and changing it more often is far better than using an excellent oil and not changing it when it's supposed to be changed.

    • That goes without saying, nothing about excellent oil suggests that it lasts longer.

  • Was due for a oil change.

Picked some up, going to replace my oil later today.
