        Hi beeawwb,

        What does CMR means?

        • +2

          CMR: Conventional Magnetic Recording.

          PMR: Perpendicular Magnetic Recording

          SMR: Shingled Magnetic Recording

        • +7

          SMR/CMR refers to the internal construction of the hard drive, or how the platters are arranged for reading/writing.

          SMR = Shingled Magnetic Recording
          CMR = Conventional Magnetic Recording

          In short, SMR drives aren't suitable for NAS applications because of how they write/read data but WD went and created a whole bunch of SMR drives and called them part of the "WD Red" product line without telling anybody. So now most people are wary about buying WD Red drives, which is why WD created the "Red Plus" product line to make it clear to consumers that they were buying a CMR drive. They never should have gotten themselves into that situation to begin with but c'est la vie.

    For the user who reported sold out, you should click the "go-to deal" button, instead of the link I shared for price comparison. Cheers.

  • Bought one of these in the last month. Actually received a WD60EFAX and not the advertised WD60EFRX as the EFRX is an older drive (released in 2014) that has been discontinued.

    • I suppose this link is clear enough that it is all about the RED PLUS line products. Have you argued with AMAZON for their misad?

      • With your link it too states that it's a WD60EFRX at the end of the title when the 6TB option is selected. If you do receive the newer EFAX have a chat with Amazon. :)

        • The link also states that the launch available date is January 2021. If it’s the new version I won’t bother. If it’s the old version I definitely will ask them return the money back. Thank you for reminding and give me time to take some screenshots as proof of mistake ads.

        • In the "Techincal Details" section is says WD60EFZX.

  • For anyone wanting more details about the differences between SMR and CMR, heres a great article with some benchmarks…

    https://www.servethehome.com/wd-red-smr-vs-cmr-tested-avoid-…

    Basically, SMR is fine if you dont plan to use in Raid. Slower, but fine. Also if anyone didnt notice, 4tb has 5 year warranty where as the 6tb has 3.

  • I bought one of these yesterday. Was very happy to find a CMR 6TB Red at that price as most local sellers seem to have EFAX only in stock. I've never bought an internal drive from Amazon US so hope they package them well.

  • The deal is over FYI
