Switching Energy Providers? A Few Good Questions?

Its time to review my Electricity and Gas supplier and being a family of 6, with 4 of them in Uni, high school and primary, i need to fast track some savings.

Some questions are relative to NSW, but some can be generally answered if you have gone down the costings path (which I suspect many have being a true OzBargain member!)

  1. Do you generally get a better deal when you combine electricity and gas with the same retailer? Or is there no benefit at all.
  2. I have 10kw Solar and tend to think that the deals are less attractive when you have solar. (perception maybe)
  3. I know there is a 10 day cooling off period, but is the sweet spot to move approx 21 days before your next bill?

Thanks in advance

    1. I would say there generally is for switching both to the same provider. Another thing to consider is a sign up bonus. Like Powershop recently had a $150 sign up via referral bonus
    • i have seen AGL offering $400 ($25 per quarter over 2 years, for Gas and also for electricity)

      • I don't think you get a better deal, but it is easily from a billing point of view.
      • I think this is just perception, but always check the off peak and peak rates (it applies to be with a solar system anyway)
      • Doesn't really matter for power since it is all remote.

    They are my 2 cents.

When I installed solar I moved to time of use billing. Rationale is that at peak time generally my solar is producing enough to cover/almost cover the usage, so the bulk of my usage is now at off peak times. Based on my last few bills I use ~15% peak, 25% shoulder, 60% off peak so I save a few hundred $$$ per annum vs single tariff.

I went with an AGL plan in NSW last week as their $400 in credits was appealing and their rates were lower than the competition.

    • hey mate do you have link to that AGL plan? Cheers

Hope that works otherwise just Google AGL $400 Credit and it should bring it up. Rates worked out cheaper than Origin or Energy Australia as well, even before factoring in the credit.

        • Cheers, seems like a very good deal

          • @ATTS: Yeah I was trying to find the catch…rates locked in for 2 years too so I don't have to play musical chairs in 12 months time.

Is the kid in uni on Austudy? Put the bills in their name and claim concessions. šŸ˜‚

In sharehouses we always made sure to put the bills under whoever had a current health care card.

    • They are on Austudy.

Can you share a link to the concessions?

      Thanks!

  • If you have a 10kw solar system you should be trying to move off gas. No daily supply charge for the gas and the solar should be able to provide all your daytime needs, and feed in tariff covering your night time use!

    • Unfortunately (or fortunately) we have 2 instant Gas Hotwater units. Which would mean 2x Hot Water Rheem Optima 400L tanks (or heatpump units)

I thought NSW were doing away with Electric Hot Water Heaters.

I do have the provision for Offpeak circuits though!

      • Out of interest, why 2? A new build in my street has 2 Rinnais next to each other. I kind of get one at each end of the house to get hot water quickly but don't understand 2 next to each other…

        • My place has one on each side of the house.
A wife and 3 daughters drove the decision for each to have their own ensuite.

If you ever have more than females than bathrooms, then you will know how much noise this address'!

          • @GLO: Yeah that makes sense. We do have more females than bathrooms but thankfully they are close together and we've never hit the flow limit on our Rinnai 26 (yet).

        • side by side sounds like it was an after thought by the builder/plumber not accommodating the 2 Instant Gas Hot water systems just after the slab went down.
