Gerintech has sought to introduce a low cost fix for the householder by exchanging standard sockets for ones that incorporate dedicated USB ports within the faceplate. These ports are capable of charge currents up to 2.1 Amps.

  • screws are larger than standard
  • hole placement is slightly higher when using with standard c clips
  • 2.4A is shared between both USB ports

  legally, yes you do need a licensed electrician.

      I'd like to know the same thing. I've been looking at the ones with one or two USB-A plus a USB-C port, but don't want to end up with the kind of problem raised here.

        If replacing an existing power point in a drywall then it's simple (use the existing c-clip and screws). Brick walls and new installations not that straightforward.

    legally, yes you do need a licensed electrician.

    legally, it is more a regulation than a law. A more a request by the industry lobbyists who wrote the regulations, than anything a court might be interested in.

    But if you do not follow standards, and something goes wrong, you may be held liable.

  I can see the appeal in these, but with USB charging technology changing every couple of years I don't see the point. You'll end up using the charger that came with your phone or whatever anyway because it is many times faster.

  And 2.4A shared between two USB-A ports in 2021 is a bit of a joke.

    You do know you don't have to charge phones with these, right? Other things are powered by usb with low amperage requirements like diffusers.

      Same, I'm considering one in a bathroom reno for shaver, bluetooth speaker, things always connected that don't need quick charge.

    I don't need to charge my phone faster as I leave it connected overnight. Same goes with my smartwatch. So for some people it is not a joke considering the price difference between this double powerpoint WITH two usb charging ports versus a high current charger only.
