Google Wanting DOB and Photo Proof of Age

Anyone else had a popup wanting DOB on google due to some new law?

Add your birthday
@gmail.com

Your date of birth is missing. This info is needed to comply with the law.

I then searched for more info, theres squillions of hits of people asking if this is legit - and then searched google Help and got this https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1333913

Update your account to meet age requirements
To manage your own Google Account, you must meet the minimum age requirement for the country associated with your account.

Use a government-issued ID
You’ll need to upload an electronic copy of a valid, government-issued ID that shows your date of birth. Most requests are reviewed within 24 hours. If you provide a copy of your government ID, we’ll delete the copy after we validate your date of birth.

and if your underage:
Set up supervision for your account

If you're not old enough to manage your own account, you can have a parent use their Google Account to set up supervision so you can continue using your account. You have 14 days after you entered your birthdate to enable supervision before your account will be disabled. After your account is disabled, you have 30 days to enable supervision before your account will be deleted.

They need to improve their marketing data as there is no such requirement in Australia. Give them a fake DOB thats more than 21 years ago.

I have a dedicated fake birthday that I always use.

I use it so often I celebrate twice a year now.

        • "I have a dedicated fake birthday that I always use." ditto

        1/1/1980 international steam birthday

        • Haha. I use that date all the time (easy to remember) but had no idea of steam relevance.

      • Use a password manager that allows for notes or custom fields.

Yep, that is the new Proof of Age Law that was passed in parliament of the 1st of this month.

JV if you're not doing a leg pull…..link please (thought initially this was an EU requirement so thus a law is possible)

      • probably easier to roll it out across the platform than selective. if it is manure, it will probably be law soon as AU pollys find out about it.

  • OP, did you make that account with an EU country ?

    • I have a few google accounts, all in AU. havent tried the others yet.

I ended up punching in a DOB- it told me how old I should be with that DOB - (over 50 :D) and everything seems to work.

  • Google recently started tying my accounts down to my actual identity, so I have an account with my full name which lists my several e-mails underneath it. They are wanting to tie your account to your actual identity to add more value to their marketing data and to the data they provide to government agencies.

  • Just change your birthday by two days. I have and it will see off any possible accurate identity theft.

  • Reminds me when AliExpress wanted my details to confirm that my purchase isn't a "fraudulent" transaction… on a debit card that I used with them for 2 years for a $4.00 item…
I ignored that prompt and didn't buy the item and after a few days tried again and they didn't ask for it anymore. Very weird but hopefully they don't ever ask again for it.

  • Classic Google (and Facebook) bait-and-switch.

Get you signed up, put lots of your personal data on it… then years later BAM we require a host of identifying data about you before you may access all your data again.

In the old days this would be called "taking hostage for ransom". For some reason politicians seem to think this predatory behaviour is acceptable now.

  • I was presented with this message to-day when I logged into GMail. I ignored it, typed “gmail.com” into my web browser's URI field, hit the “Enter” key, and was taken straight to my GMail inbox. It seems that the new demand “You must add your date of birth!” is presented after log-in credentials are validated, and only immediately afterward; once the log-in session is active, the user is free to navigate ‘manually’ within Google's range of web services.

However, I would not be surprised if this loophole were to be closed sooner or later.
