How far away of a wide implementation of electric car?

Hello OzB,

I might be in the market for a new car. My habit is to drive the car until it feels needed to upgrade. I'm happy with my current 2005 Subaru Impreza and in no hurry to get a new one.

However, my wife has been mentioning on off that she wants to pool for a new car in the next few years. Would you think electric car would be widespread by then?

About our car habit:
Once a month I need to work in regional NSW
Thes rest of the month we live in South West Sydney most time on Canterbury corridor
Wouldn't mind 2nd hand, wanting reliable car

I myself love rally but understand it's like porn, watch don't touch

Budget under 50k I suppose. No need to go over that.

Thanks for reading.

Erm … wtf is 'Yes' supposed to mean?!? LOL

Getting back to the actual question asked, I suggest that there are a few more things to consider:

      1. It's good that you don't live in Victoria (and possibly South Australia now, as well?), where the opportunistic state government is about to start taxing EV owners bulk cash-money per kilometre driven; but there is no guarantee that the NSW state government will not also decide to do this in the future.

      2. Do you have solar panels on your roof? A battery? 'Free electricity' would change the equation/relevant considerations substantially.

      3. May I ask what you (or rather, your wuzza) means by '… wants to pool'? Is she referring to a small group of peeps buying one car to share?

      4. I must say I agree with a sentiment aired below, that it is a bit bizarre asking this question now given that evidently you are only planning to buy another car in a '… few years'. Both the new and used car markets are quite dynamic (particularly right now/this year and probably the next as well)—so any conclusions you draw now (and whatever they were based on) are likely to be completely outdated in a 'few years'.

    Maybe

  • same here. i'm still torn between buying a new-ish car now or wait for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 / Kia EV6 to release. brain says to wait for 6 months to observe the used car market prices + electric car; heart wants to buy a Mazda CX5 GT 2016 =(

    • +6

      Your heart says CX5?!

You need more car culture lol

      • lol. agree on that. what cars would you suggest? No french cars

        • Lol just have a look around at the market

Used cars are crazy, I'd be waiting a year or so if it was me

    the next few years.

    😂 Seriously?!

Ask the question when you're actually in the market

    • Just doing some research on 2024 models…

  • We did a test drive of a Tesla Model 3 today and its a game changer. We have a nice relatively new petrol car and I was sad to drive home in it.

I guess that in the next 5 years, we will see petrol cars starting to struggle against petrol cars. Its like Netflix vs DVD's all over again.

Petrol cars against EV cars. Dont drink and post on OzB late at night children.

    • I've got my eyes on the Ioniq. I'm curious to see how the Koreans tackle the market.

  • Yeah, we are a bit behind in Australia with electric cars, but we have a very different geography to deal with than most countries.

When I speak to folk back home in the UK, almost everyone is planning electric for their next car, but there's a lot of incentives/tax benefits to doing in over there as well. It's only a matter of time here as well, but when that time is, it's hard to say exactly.

How far into regional NSW are you going/what location? That could eliminate electric as an option in the near term at least. If it's too far/there is no fast charger on the way then electric would be problematic.

Electric cars are largely for ‘new’ buyers, and at premium prices too. Until we get electric cars at comparable prices as petrol they aren’t going to sell in great numbers.

Then there is the age of the vehicle fleet in Aus, it’s like 13yo on average. It’s probably going to be around 10years before electric cars are the average.

Would I have an electric car if they were available in the 5-8yo age with the same price and features as current 5-8yo vehicles.

  • They will probably take over the new car sales charts in around 2030 and make up half of the road fleet in 2035, if that answers your question..

  • I'm saving for a Kia EV6, but I don't really see EV's being the majority purchased vehicle before 2030.

What was the question? You want a new car but not in the market for a new one? Your wife wants a pool? And something about watching pornography?
