Or you can go to TARGET and get it from the whole clearance range from $9-$14.

A DC fan from target for $14?

I have this one from Kogan and it leaves cheap pedestal fans for dust. I'd never bother again with a cheap pedestal fan.

      • I’m looking at getting a DC fan. Can you tell us why you like the Kogan one?

      • Can you turn off the LEDs for nighttime?

        • +2

They turn off automatically after 10 seconds or so

I posted why DC pedestal fans are not as good as people may think last time there was a deal on the Kogan DC fan. There's no real money saving - considering the reduced running costs take many years to recover against the increased fan cost, and they don't last really outlast the AC fans either.

You might be right on the power usage BUT BUT you forgot one very important thing. Noise level is so so much much quieter especially we need a fan running at night. In fact so quiet you cannot hear it.

        • The Kogan fans that i have have far outlasted the cheap kmart pedestal fans I bought. Those started to grind after one summer of use. The airflow that it pushes is much lower as well.

          • -1

@b2dz: I usually get 3 years out of them, with my current $12 kmart special going on 4 years now. With 3 years at $12, it would take 5+ years of the fan being on close to all the time to recover the cost.

Apart from using it on hot days and to help dry the washing inside on high speed, I mostly run it on the lowest speed at night for the white noise. It's very common for people to do. Being silent as the above poster pointed out isn't a plus, it's actually a minus in my book as I and many others rely on the whitenoise it provides to assist with sleeping.

If a quite as possible pedestal fan is something you want, then yes pay the 5x cost for a DC fan. If you are not bothered by the sound of a normal pedestal fan - then it's not something to pay extra for.

It's great you really like it, I'm not knocking your experience with it - however in the previous thread I linked and in this one there are people making negative comments about their bad experience with it. A poster below commented that their Kogan DC pedestal fan performs significantly worse than their cheap AC ones.

I'm not against DC fans. I think they are better than AC for most use cases - just not worth the extra money.

            • @studentl0an: Have you used a good DC fan though? Appreciate the sentiment but it sounds like your experience is one sided. It's not about the cost for me, but the silence when using on low speed, how much airflow it can push when needed on hot days and how long it will last for.

I live in western Sydney and only used my AC 2-3 times last summer, these fans make a huge difference.

              • @b2dz: Yes I pay the extra for when silence matters, such as in the computer next to me (Artic P12 PWM/PST). I don't need a silent pedestal fan, so I won't pay the extra $50+ for the privilege. If it used much lower wattage that it could pay for itself within a few years then I may consider it, but currently it takes 5+ years to pay for itself.

DC pedestal fans don't necessarily move more air than an AC fan. DC fans can move more air for the same input watts, but if it's a lower wattage fan (as is the case with this Kogan one at 25w) then it most likely would move the same amount of air as an AC fan at 35w.

People have commented in thread and the prior thread I linked to stating their experience with this Kogan DC fan wasn't as good as their previous AC fans. I'm not saying your experience wasn't as you said, I'm saying that their experience was that a DC fan at 25w moved less air than their AC fans which most are rated around ~35w.

If total air movement was the most important to you, perhaps you would be more suited going for a Vornado fan that excels at air movement. If you are happy paying the $50+ premium and really like the combination of silence + the air movement of the Kogan fan then great, this product is suited for you.

                • @studentl0an: Appreciate both yours and @b2dz's comments here. I was interested in purchasing this but the fact it's evidently so quiet is actually a downside for me as I use a CPAP machine. Whilst the CPAP is fairly quiet the little sound it does make drive me batty, so my current Mistral fan will have to do as it eliminates those sounds!

      • Do you have to press a button to cycle through the speeds?

        • +1

Yes, that's probably the only bad thing about it. There is 12 speeds and there's only one direction cycling, so you need to go cycle through if you want "1" and you're already one "2" sort of thing.

  • Has anyone used the orbis luggage sets? Any reviews?

  • Kogan also has another DC fan for $59.99. Has a higher RRP so I'm not sure which fan is better.
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-standard-dc-motor-pedesta…

    • The Premium one is better. It used to have an RRP of $200 but was never at that price, always half. The non-premium one was always at $70. Looks like they updated the RRP of the premium but left the non-premium one unchanged.

  • I bought one and returned as soon I could. It's overpriced and under quality. As I been enlightened before by fellow ozbargainer, savings on energy is not that big to warrant such a price difference. In my 45 cm AC fan is actually better when I need one in a warm weather inside my large living area. DC ones won't even make you feel it's even turned on sometimes if you in large living room

  • Does anyone have the luggage to comment on the build quality, wheels, etc?
