  • No Dolby Atmos?

    • +1

is there an ozb-approved gold standard for AV receivers?

    • +3

Pretty sure you'd need a 5.1.2 receiver at minimum for atmos, this is 5.2 so makes sense it does not have atmos

      • Sorry
IMHO In this day and age i feel an amp not offering Atmos is instantly dated.
Although, it would explain the discount.

Sorry, definitely don't agree with that, plenty of people with only a 2.1 / 3.1 / 5.1 system with no intention to mount speakers overhead. Definitely nothing to do with being dated, it's rather the kind of setup you want.

          • +1

@BeerCrisp: Yep I really do not need speakers and wiring taking up my entire lounge and being in a rental means no mounting. And personally I would rather have a high end 2.1 setup than an entry level atmos setup. Quality over quantity.

          • @BeerCrisp: When you say mount speakers overhead, do you mean place them on top of your tower stands? Or is the speakers on top of the towers no good

            • @Budju: From my little knowledge of atmos it is expands on 5.1 and 7.1 surround-sound, it would require installing 2-4 speakers on the ceiling for a 'dome of sound'. Creating 5.2.1 / 5.4.1 / 7.2.1 / 7.4.1 atmos is pretty full on and not sure how many people would have this kind of setup. Effectively why atmos being N/A on this receiver is to be expected and actually not a downfall.

              • @BeerCrisp: Yeah, I just thought it was feasible to do them on top of the speakers as opposed to mounted on the walls. I know the atmos speakers themselves can be quite expensive, so probably in this price range not what you'd expect or want.

The RXV6A has atmos, but it also switches between height and surround with the channels depending on signal provided.
5.1 is a huge step up from tv sound or even a soundbar regardless.

    • How can you switch to hight speakers when they're not even connected to the receiver because it only has five speaker channels for surround sound. No high speakers for atmos with this receiver.

      • +1

They're referring to the model up(RXV6A) from this one(RXV4A).

      • Sorry, didnt explain that well. The RXV6A is a 7.2 unit.
The RXV4A is a 5.2 unit however the .2 is for the two sub outs.

The 6A is a little deciving in its naming unless you get into the fine print. Alot of reviews online that explain it in better detail though.

    • I recently purchased one and you're essentially picking between presence (atmos or front height) or surround back/zone2

  • Be warned, these amps have had a significant problem with, I think, the Xbox Series X units.
And the HDMI 2.1 features are vapourware and never arrived.
