Did James ever review these? Are they better than just tamping with a normal tamp consistently?

I own a generic one I ordered off Amazon and i didn't find it made that big a difference to just tamping as normal. Long as shake the portafilter before tamping it pretty much does the same job imo.

      • I have the one that came with my dual boiler. I have a niche, so it has the grind cup which I tip+shake into the 58mm. Just seen these things around and wondered if it's even worth it. But you've answered my question and saved me a few $. Thanks dude.

If you're already good at using a normal tamper then you don't need this.

I never mastered it & wanted to buy something better than the supplied Breville tamper anyway, so this eliminates a lot of variables & makes life easy.

          • @WatchNerd: As was stated above if you've found a comfortable method to get good consistent tamps then I don't think this is necessary but for those still learning or refining it could be a tool worth getting.

Worst comes to worst just gift it to someone if it's not for you lol.

Edit, replied to wrong person lol

    • Don't remember James reviewing this type of tamper. I have this one and find it a lot better than the OEM tamper and blade. Helps with uniformity as far as distribution of the coffee is concerned.

      • Yep the supplied Breville tamper seems like junk compared to this. I used the blade to set the depth on the Matow.

  • I’ve had this one for the last year and would recommend if you want simple consistent tamping. After it’s set it’s zero effort or guesswork for every tamp and my partner who has little interest in learning how to make coffee properly can knock them up as well. My only improvement would be if they could fix the thread which retains some grinds but since I don’t reset often I just leave it there.

Edit - the one other tool I found made things so much nicer / cleaner was the funnel

I have this and it's far superior to the one that comes with the Breville and definitely reduces channelling. I'm pretty sure palm tampers would benefit even the most experienced baristas.

As for the leveller on the opposite side, I don't use it as I didn't find it made a difference. Interestingly there is a new movement to only level and not tamp but I can't see how it would really differ than just tamping.

  • i have one for my breville dual boiler, different brand as it’s just got the 3 ridges for leveling, works a treat, press down while turning and it levels the coffee, better than my flat tamp ……the smart grinder dumps more coffee on one side of my portafilter so the 3 ridges and a turn gets me better results ….no more channeling.

Kinda hope you're using the 58mm (this listing is for the 53mm) on your dual boiler breville. Otherwise I think you're doing it wrong.

      • yes, I have a 58mm, amazon also has 58mm ones, $30 though.
