Asus Zenfone 8 5G Global Version 128GB 8GB $945, 256GB 8GB $1049, 256GB 16GB $1265 Delivered @ Best Mobile Phone

210

Hi guys - first deal here. Been waiting for this to go on sale before grabbing and just noticed bestmobilephone finally has them online. Has them in Obsidian Black or Horizon Silver, depending on preference. They also offer a 1 year Australian warranty, but I've not bought from them before

Nice and compact Android phone with flagship internals - see the GSMArena page about it here, and their review

They also have other versions: the 256GB/8GB version, and the 256GB/16GB version

They also sell the Zenfone 8 Flip in a 128GB/8GB or 256GB/8GB version, but that doesn't look to be as powerful of a phone as the normal Zenfone 8

The Zenfone 8 has a SD888, 8-16GB ram, 5.9" screen 120Hz Super AMOLED screen, apparently very similar size to iPhone 12, 64MP main shooter, and my personal favourite - a 3.5mm headphone jack (how often do you see those on the flagships of today?!)

In EU, the Zenfone 8 has been released with early bird pricing. It looks like bestmobilephones are the first to start selling these here, so it probably won't be the best deal once it's been released, but it's also possible this is our early bird pricing? I haven't seen any mention of pricing here yet

This phone has gotten rave reviews mostly. They're saying it's the best compact phone so far…

    • I know! I've got a Xiaomi Mi 6 I bought almost 4 years ago. I'm not a fan of big phones - I just like how the smaller phones feel - but have hated how to get a small phone I need to compromise on internals

This phone is everything I want and I can't wait to get one!

        Sony Experia 10iii ?

        • +1

It's not bad, but I think I'd prefer the newer internals of the Zenfone - especially since my current phone has lasted almost 4 years, I want to make sure to give my new phone the best chance to survive that long!

    • It is only 2mm narrower than Galaxy S10, it has better CPU and bigger battery, screen is 120Hz. That's all advantages. Camera may be better in some situations, and worse in others give or take.

Everything else is worse than S10: 1mm thicker, 12g heavier, screen smaller and worse resolution, no microSD, no extra programmable button

      • no extra programmable button

        Power button is programmable

This phone caught my eye just recently and I was looking into, looks fantastic. I'm considering it to make a switch from my iPhone 6s which support is ending for later this year.

      Video reviews that I watched:

Likewise for me - this phone looks perfect for what I'm after, and is a huge upgrade for my phone! I'm just so glad it's finally available!

        • +2

Yeah it'd be a huge upgrade for me as far as specs go. Still gonna wait and see what iPhone 13 will be like and the price before deciding, but of course the price will be much higher than this. Been several years since I owned an Android phone so it could be a tough choice to make.

The main negative I see with this Asus phone is the ring around the front camera, but I suppose as time goes on I'd get used to it, similar to how one would with the iPhone notch I guess.

  • +2

It would be my ideal phone if it had wireless charging.

    • +3

That's fair - I've never had wireless charging for my phone, so I don't mind too much. More importantly, I feel like this is a step in the right direction for phones, so hopefully in a generation or two we'll see a similar sized phone with the equivalent flagship performance and wireless charging!

Any word on the bands that it uses? Which carriers it will work best with?

    • Unfortunately I'm not sure! I don't quite get how bands work or how to check who uses what bands et in - last time I got a phone I spent like half an hour trying to figure out if it would work in Aus, then gave up and hoped for the best!
Am interested to know though if anyone knows!

The International version has band 28 [4G], while the U.S version doesn't.

      • Also for future reference https://www.frequencycheck.com/

But this site doesn't have this phone haha.

Someone copied the info from the website though so with a little effort wont be hard to figure out

Depends if this is the A or B version and network provider - there might be some areas where the phone doesn't work

      From the Asus website:

      TD-LTE (Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42)
      WCDMA (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 19)
      EDGE/GPRS/GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz)
      5G Bands: n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n20, n28, n38, n77, n78

Great phone. I want one. Phones are getting too big these days. Wish Xiaomi / POCO will make a small model at half price though.

    • I agree completely. I've got a Xiaomi at the moment, and there's just a couple of things about it that I've not liked as much over the years - to the point where currently I'd really have to consider it at even half the price. That said, this phone ticks all the boxes for me, so I'm happy with that!

Have the Zenfone 7 Pro and from what i read, the 8th version does not have much improvement to the 7 which was already quite good.
Zenfone has most of the things that i find important in a mobile phone:

    Big battery
    Battery management
    Dual Sim
    Extended storage
    Oled screen

    • I don't have the Zenfone at all, but from what I've read the Zenfone 8 Flip is pretty similar to the 7 range, whereas the 8 is a little different and a bit more powerful.

That said, the Zenfone 8 doesn't have expandable storage unfortunately

      • +2

How so? the 8flip has the same SOC as the 8 (SD888), the main differences (aside from the flip camera and obvious size differences) are the 8 flip has expandable storage, only 90hz screen, 5000mah battery.

        • My bad, you've got a very fair point - I think because I've been looking at so many phones lately I got it confused!

I think what I was thinking of is that the Zenfone 7 Pro and Zenfone 8 Flip are basically identical with the exception of the SD888 chip, and a few other small changes (GPU, slightly different camera maybe? iunno, I'm not a camera guy)

But yeah, the difference between the Flip and non flip version is indeed minor - the screen difference, lack of expandable storage and battery size are indeed the main ones!

          • @Opaquer: The Zenfone 8 Flip is basically just an updated Zenfone 7 vanilla (non-pro). Hence why its cameras do not have ois like the Pro.

I've been rocking the ZF7P since the November. Great phone but let down by Asus limiting the use of the selfie camera to just its ultrawide lens (but cropped in) in 3rd party apps. Defeats the purpose of marketing it as the best selfie camera in the world when you can't even use it in social media and video conferencing apps.

            • @CVonC: Ah, TIL. Yeah, that sounds a little silly if they're doing it that way - definitely like how the 8 is. I got the Xiaomi Mi 6 like 4 years ago and the camera was average at best, so any phone I get now is going to be a good upgrade for the camera!

I give this an up vote for a non CCP brand while getting the price so close to the CCP phone's dumping price.

  • +3

The stock is in Hongkong, not Australian stock.

  • How would the 256gb/16gb version compare to say something like a top spec Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra? Seems like it's missing the wireless charging feature at first glance but have been keeping an eye on the ASUS line of phones (ROG, Zenfone) for something good.

  • +3

ASUS AUSTRALIA WILL BE IMPORTING THE PHONE SOON for the first time ever.

According to an email I got prior to the announcement. I've heard late June/July will be the timeframe for first sales. Local stock with AU power adaptor may be around the same price with local warranty.

    • That sounds amazing - but at the same time, potentially another 6 weeks to wait before getting AU stock is going to suck :P. Not entirely sure I can hold out that long

    • What about the 7 ?

      • Why would they import the 7, last year's model?

        • Why not? Not even a year old

  • +2

Pre-orders of local stock now available from JB Hi-Fi. I personally think it's worth paying extra for the benefits of buying from established retailers.

    $999 128GB

    $1099 256GB 8GB < available in silver as well

The Zenfone 8 Flip is also available for $1199.

    • I've been waiting and checking every day for local stock - I was thinking the exact same as you! The one day that I don't check if it's out yet, it comes out :P

Thanks for the heads up - definitely looking into it!

  • Anyone has an idea if VoLTE works on the Zenfone 8? I have read reviews where the previous Zenfones just doesn't work :(
