  • Bought one last year without the ice maker/water chiller -can’t tell from the pic- works great no issues. Only complaint is the service of the third party who organises delivery pretty unreliable

  • Only 2.5 star energy rating? how does this compare to the competition? Might save a bit upfront, but then incur more over time due to increased electricity bills?

I'm shopping for a fridge atm and 90% are 2 to 3 stars

    • +1

Fridge 2.5 stars is good, if you have good source of coal and can pipe it's exhaust out

1 star of fridge energy rating is roughly $50/year

French door fridges today are 3.5-4 stars, even cheap models

I recently got a Chiq 432L bottom mount for around $630 and been amazed at how efficient it is.
Has an inverter compressor, rated at 4 stars. The label says 321KWh per year, but is more like half that from my measurements.

I guess they updated the star system as the old fridge it replaced, a smaller 351L, was also rated at 4 stars and 840KWh per year!

For comparison, here's the power draw of the Chiq against my 65L camping fridge running alongside it, both at -18°C

I think the inverter compressor makes sense, runs harder after a defrost when it needs to then just chugs along at 40w in between.

BTW, when comparing fridges also check the gross vs usable volumes. A lot of manufacturers don't even include both in the specs, though is usually on the label itself if you are looking in store. Can find there is a big difference between the two.

      • What is the story behind these? Smaller guy doing a chinese import like my Solt air conditioner? Why did you go twith this brand and what does it cost? Any Warranty?

        • Chiq is a brand of Changhong which is a pretty massive TV and aircon manufacturer in China. They've had a presence in Australia since 2001 as far as I can tell.
I got it from the Good Guys though they don't seem to have this model listed any more (hope that doesn't mean anything :/) . JB's still has the black model

Obviously price range played a big part. It was around $630 at the time which compared with other similar fridges was pretty good.
Warranty is 5 years (3 and extra 2 with registration) and 10 years on the inverter.
At the end of the day, was still taking a punt really. Has only been about 6 months but so far been happy with it.

          • @bamzero: Ok cool. I have been into the Chinese brands since my robo vac, I’m careful but no regrets to date. Cheap landlord bought Chinese air conditioners from a known brand and they were a total nightmare. Keen but wary when it comes to essential appliances where a breakdown hassle is just not worth the saving

  • 2.5 stars are pretty normal for fridges. I have yet to see a 5 star fridge.

    • +6

      So wrong!
it's normal for side by side fridges, yes. Though even cheap French doors models today are 3.5-4 stars.
I was on market for new fridge last year, there plenty of big fridges 4.5 stars. In fact it's harder to find fridge under 3 stars, except side by side

    • If you add in the 10 year energy costs this fridge is much more expensive than a high star rated one from a good brand

      • +2

Not saying you're wrong but show your calculation please.

For example, a 600L, 3 star fridge costs an average of $146 per year to run. Whereas, a 2 star equivalent costs $43 more to run per year – which works out to be an extra $430 on energy bills over the life of the product.

Assuming 10 years, again, an extra $430 gets you a lot more fridge.

  • It is not available till the 29th, maybe the OP should change the title

    • Sorry Buddie, I just updated in the description

  • +$99 shipping

    • $199 for me. Ouch!

    • "Unfortunately, ALDI delivery service is currently unavailable in your area" for me

  • French Door

Do they have an Australian model? Think it’s called an esky.

  • Unfortunately, ALDI delivery service is currently unavailable in your area

    • No delivery to Albury or Wodonga either

  • From the pics and info doesn't look like it even has ice cube trays or slots to make ice .

    • +1

You can buy a ice cube tray and make it yourself

  • Does it need to be plumbed in? Doesn't seem to say.

    • From the pics, it looks like it's just a storage container for water. So probably not..

  • Need a new fridge for my parents. Is this a decent one to get?

  • Additionally, the no frost technology will save you time and effort for defrosting food.

    Not sure they're 100% on the point of a no-frost freezer :D

  • why is it not available for any postcode in Western Australia???? this is the state that's carrying the country's economy since the pandemic started.

    • "Currently delivering to selected postcodes in NSW, VIC & QLD.”
