  • Please don’t support booking.com. Their fees can be upwards of 40% for businesses. Book direct.

    • While I understand your position if you are a small business owner, the same can be said about most other big businesses; Steam: 30%, Apple: 30% plus de facto price fixing, Flightcentre (well, when they existed in their prime) etc. Even small travel agencies have a pretty healthy mark-up. That is how they make their living.

    • Booking.com provides that business with access and exposure to a global customer base. Without booking.com that business will probably have no customers. I think booking.com's commission is fair. Best of all, booking.com passes on some of that commission back to us with the cashback.

I think the original comment is about supporting local businesses i.e. you can still use Booking.com to search (same as how we all use Webjet for flights) however you can book directly with the hotel/small business. In most cases, if you call the accomm provider, they would be happy to offer you a lower rate than online prices as a win-win - just some thoughts

I've found this to rarely be the case - price matching is usually all they want to do. It's also why I don't mind going through these booking aggregators anymore.

@Tyrx: I agree re price matching. I usually use Hotels.com rather than booking.com but same logic applies. I have rung up hotels and asked if they would give me a 15% discount versus the h.com price . When I explain that this is cheaper than paying 22% to B,com or H.com I have been accused of trying to scam them. Once I was offered 10% discount and once $5 (about 2%) but generally they will only offer to match the H.com price so I would lose the 9/10% benefit of booking with H.com plus the cashback from CR or SB.

So now I don't bother with the phone call and just book with Hotels.com. I have sometimes been asked by hoteliers upon checking out if I would consider booking direct next time and I always say only if you will give me at least a 15% discount. Only one has ever suggested that that may be possible.

          • +1

@Tyrx: The reason for this is because the aggregators have clauses to stop the hotels from offering a lower price, and police this policy by randomly calling hotels and pretending to be a average joe wanting to save a buck and if direct booking can yield a saving. If they agree, the aggregator will cut them off.

Pretty brutal business where increasing middle men takes a big slice of the consumer pocket. Hotel -> aggregator -> cashback company -> customer. With two middle men all taking their cut to support their expense and equity base, when we could all just go direct, but not.

I would, but unfortunately booking directly rarely provides any incentive to do so :(
Until they do booking and flightcentre will continue to get my business.

      • +2

Yep, and quite often I found direct prices are more expensive than booking.com. Sure you can ask them to match the price, but so much hassle, not to mention there's 12% (or normally 4%) cashback that they wouldn't bother.

    • Same like ubereats and doordash i guess..

I just compared a booking with Mantra directly and via Booking.com for the exact same period with the exact same room. Booking.com was $200 cheaper

I hear what you're saying and agree to a degree but operators are not forced to use Booking.com as a booking service. If a hotel is not happy with Booking.com's fees, they are more than capable of operating independently

My experience, in Australia at least, is that called direct rarely offers any kind of realistic discount - and at the moment, most tourist accommodation providers are making money hand over fist.

    • If businesses are happy to pay booking.com upwards of 40%, then they should offer the same as a discount if the customer books direct.

I do both. If businesses offer a discount to book direct, I’ll book direct. If they charge the same as booking.com, I’ll book through booking.com

  • I had bad experience in booking.com, they cancelled all our bookings (4 in different states), blocked my account without notifying me at all.

It’s a good thing i did a random check 2 days before our trip! I called them but the rep told me they can’t tell me the reason why but my account look sus.
