  • Buy then cancel within a month?

    • +11

Not since they added voucher repayment

    • Omg, did they actually have it where you could basically pay $99, get a month of Telstra service, get a $700 gift card, then you could cancel without penalty? lol

      • +2

No, there was an Early Termination Cost (ETC) of some dollar amount, which usually worked out cheaper than the plan/included phone cost so you could profit easily.

        • Just to add in, if you tried to do it a couple of times, it'd eventually flag and they wouldn't allow you to sign up on future offers. Not sure if it was rigorously enforced or not.

  • +41

This plan is currently $65 per month on Telstra. So the $700 gift card is really worth only $292.

    • +5

      Good investigation Inspector..

  • +11

Still not convinced it's better than going direct thru Telstra on their $65/month with 180gb plan? $780 total cost vs $1188. Obviously get ~$300 more value in a gift card if you're going to spend that anyway but with Telstra you get more data, data sharing, some international call allowance, no lock in contract etc…

    • +4

It's good if you claim a tax deduction for your phone bill because you get a deduction for $99 instead of $65.

      • +1

Being dumb i didn't think about this. Clever idea mate. Cheers

      • -2

So assuming you're paying tax at 30 cents in the dollar, you'd rather pay an extra $34 for the same deal to get back $10.20 in tax? You're worse off by $23.80.

        • +3

Your forgetting about the gift card.

Even if you assume the lowest bracket, 19c per $1.

          You pay $99/mth
          Get $18.81 tax savings ($99*0.19)
Assume you sell the gift card for 10% off, $52.50 cashback per month

          Net cost $27.69/mth

Direct Telstra $65 plan is $52.65/mth after tax deduction.

Cost would go down even more for higher brackets.

  • +4

Clearly they know how much their plans worth

    • +2

Yeah these always have a bottom line around $40/month

  • where did you get this? any news on the mobile broadband one only?
    last deal was pretty sweet

    • if you go to tgg website, there is telstra plan section to see all the details

      • ooOOO thanks, its not as sweet as before, might give jb a call first. thanks a lot dude.

  • Do you get the 10 off as well going through chat?

  • +2

only for the people whose company provide communication allowance monthly and can cover this

  • +14

    Hm..pass.
    Hopefully there'll have a $69 (or better still $59) p.m + $500 GC for JB Hi-fi soon.

    • +2

Same here, really need one of these in the next few weeks! I think I'll even jump on $400 because nothing happened around Click Frenzy.

    • +2

One usually comes out in June which is what I jump on. Hanging out for it too

    • so waiting for it.

    • Yep, my plan ends in a month so waiting for a new deal.

  • +5

Why would anyone even bother with these plans?

    • +1

I think it’s mostly because of the great value.

      • +5

        What great value?

        $1198 total

$700 gc likely be able to sell for $650

Leaves $548 for 12m plan, unless you need this kind of data it’s average at best

        • +1

If work pays your phone bill you get $700 for free, as much data as you could want and the benefit of being on telstra

          • +1

@Quantumcat: I’m just commenting in general, for the majority this plan is useless & people get sucked in to the gift card & massive data they don’t need, if your work pays for it yeah definitely works for that

    • +4

The only reason I can think of is for people who can claim their monthly bills as an expense through work.

      • +4

Aah right, so people show it as 99 dollar per month for tax deductions.

        • +2

What I meant is a straight-up reimbursement. So you pay Telstra $99, work refunds you $99 via receipt claims and you get a $700 voucher. No ATO involved here.

          • @bozbargain: Oh right. 700 dollars free

          • @bozbargain:

work refunds you $99 via receipt claims

good onya mate. but not everyone works for such work

            • +3

@DAT: Neither do I - that's why I wrote above that I can only see how this plan is interesting 'for people who can claim their monthly bills as an expense through work', in response to U30004's question.

              • -4

@bozbargain: yeah cool, But again, I doubt if any of those companies that used to "reimburse in full" (I used to work for one 10+years ago) are still doing it because I heard some of those corporate/business plans are cheaper instead of paying employees separately. again not an expert.

                • +1

@DAT: There are plenty that still do. Have a quick look through all the forum posts.

                  • +1

@bloopzorm9: Yup most do. Just gotta work for a company where communication/data is required for your line of work. Eventually you reach a point where its cheaper to let the employees choose their own plan and use their own phone as opposed to the company providing a handset or phone

                    • @AH: Cheers folks.. good to know :)

  • +7

I used to chase these before switching to Belong.
Now I pay $10 /month and haven't actually paid in 8 months from referal bonuses. not a heavy data user though so won't suit everyone

    • Hmmm I'm thinking about just going to boost if no jbhifi deal comes round

      • +1

I found Belong is the same quality network as Telstra through JB hi-fi anyway.

And the savings are outweighing gift card value by a long way

        • Would be appreciative if u can spill the beans on this $10 a month deal?

          • +2

@agalea101: See below, I neglected to realise that belong minimum plan is now $15/month.

Search OzB for Belong and there are plenty of deals that explains best plan and how referal bonuses work etc

    • +1

Do they still have that 10/mth plan?

      • +2

$15 now sadly. $10 a month available for those who already on it. Sorry I should have mentioned this as it's not available, but even the $15 is likely saving vs Telstra directly.

        • +2

          Definitely.

I'm on optus 25/mth(10gb + 250 mins international but this is moot tbh), on it because I want optus sports. Plus I got unlimited data (1.5mbs).

Not sure if I get 5g connection, but not planning on getting a 5g phone anytime soon anyways; nor will my data allowance last long either lmao

        • +1

          For example, $99/month is $1,188pa.

Belong $15 month is $180pa (less with referal bonus on startup and discounted start-up kit) usually$40 bonus value easy to obtain.

That's over $1000 more expensive to get the gift card.

Again, if data usage is heavy not quite apples and apples, I have NBN at home so only use data outside of house, average 5gb/month.

  • +11

The party is over with these deals. Nothing beats the $1000 flagships they were offering on a 12 month $59 deal last year which you could then pay a $390 ETC the next day.

    • it’s exploitation hence comes to an end

  • +1

I had a read over the document.

    What an awesome "promotion".

  • +7

I can't believe this deal has stayed up for so long without any details, how many GB data, call inclusions etc?

  • Still waiting for this deal with $10 monthly credits make it $89 / month.

  • it is now extended until 20th June

    • Thanks, Updated the deal
