There is a brand called Superlux model HD681 that retails for $39 delivered.

Rtings puts them in the same class as the K712

    https://www.rtings.com/headphones/tools/compare/akg-k712-pro….

There was recently a story in The Age Green Guide about the Superlux.

I'm familiar with Superlux's headphones, and the Samson derivative. They are good for the price, but that's it. They also tend to be uncomfortable as hell, and they're also AKG K240 knock-offs.

RTings are terrible headphone reviewers because of how their scoring system weights things, and how they slide in poor subjective analysis in to bump the scores as they see fit. Until they improve upon that with some attempt to measure or describe detail level or timbre, it's a delivery mechanism for Amazon referral revenue. Do not use them for anything other than checking channel balance, and frequency response curves, and even then they're useless after something like 7kHz.

They are not in the same class as the 600 or 700 series from AKG, though the 700 series is tuned such that it will sound thin unless you EQ it, modi it, or pair it with the correct kinds of recordings to make the most of its sound signature (diffuse field).

Assuming Superlux use the same drivers (ie. from the same factory in China) then they are more than 95% there on audio quality except at fraction of the cost of the original branded stuff. Then the buyer can make a decision on how much they want to spend. I had a knock off Audio Technica headphones and I could not spot the difference between it and a genuine one in a blind folded test. The audio difference was so small and the tell was in the exterior workmanship.

      • They don't use the same drivers.

        • The Chinese are renounced experts in reverse engineering and Western companies are willing to set up factories and disclose the technology to them for a share of the Chinese market and cheap labor. It would not be any surprise if they produced high quality knock-offs cheaply.

            @wildwild: I've heard them… they're not.

As you go up in pricing, there tends to be a lot more manual labour involved, as well as more complex electronics and refined materials. If you cheap out on all three fronts, it doesn't matter what you base your design on. The Superlux headphones need a decent bit of EQ and sometimes a bit of DSP to deal with those short comings, and doing that makes it sound somewhat flat.

Plenty of good Chinese audio companies, but let's get serious about where the value is at for $30-$40 headphone products. Move onto the Takstar Pro 82 v2.

  • If these had a removable cable I'd probably crumble and buy them. But I've got a set of 6XX on order, so I really should just wait for them. And maybe the 990Pro to go on special…

DT 990 over these? You might want to demo both before you commit to that. :P

These would have the better combination of sound signature, staging and imaging out of all three, but the 6XX are just too smooth.

      • Yeah, it's an annoying decision :-D

        • +2

I'd just stick with the 6XX and push in a different direction entirely down the line. They'll be with you for a while, and will give you a good appreciation of timbre and resolution.

@jasswolf: Certainly going to be better for mixing than my Elears (which I would not attempt to mix on). Should get some new pads for my 770s (not Pro), as well, that's the main problem with them currently.

  • whats the normal price

    • $300-$400.

It's pushing down a bit because of excess supply due to covid, as well as multiple competing offering from Sennheiser that go for $250-$300 (HD 6XX and HD 560S)

I have the k712 pro and this guy right here
    https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index/list_of_pres…

improved the sound so much. Can literally just hit the off/on toggle and notice an improvement.
I prefer the 712 over the 6xx as feel on my head and sound style But ymmv. the lack of detachable cable may be annoying. However, tbh I just wish they were wireless.

Headphones are very subjective, you might want to have to listen to it first before buying. I have one of these and because its is flat (even with a headphone amp) that I find it very boring and put it away and use my ATH-AD900x for the larger soundstage.
