Pioneer VSX-1121 7.1 Channel 3D AV Receiver US$545.62 Delivered (~AU$524.63)

Regular price on Amazon.com is $499.99. Currently selling for $449.99 + $95.73 delivery. I used a rough currency conversion of US$1/AU$1.04 to accommodate for any credit card charges (last price from rba.gov.au was $1.0615).

This model is not actually available in Australia. The model down is the Pioneer VSX-1021 which is currently available from JB Hifi Online for $795.20 here (ends today): https://www.jbhifionline.com.au/hi-fi-home-audio/amps-receiv…

I just popped down to the local JB and they will not budge from this price. Your mileage may vary.

You can see the difference between the models from the link to the Amazon page (more power, more hdmi, internet radio features etc).

Please note, this is from the US and my research suggests there is not an auto-switch to 240v. This means you will need to get a step down transformer. Something like this will do (don't forget to use your 10% off eBay voucher that ends 02/02 - for those who received a voucher from ebay): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/240v-110v-Step-Down-Stepdown-Tran…

So for ~$600, you can get a reasonably better amplifier at ~$200 cheaper.

Alternatively, if you don't want to muck around with transformers, this is a good deal (thanks Third_Gear): http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/60111
But note that the VSX-1121 is more comparable to the NR709-NR809 on the food chain.

Caution: As this is an overseas unit, do not expect any local warranty support. Especially since this unit is not available in Australia as far as I know.

Good price but what about warranty? I doubt Pioneer Australia would touch this, especially as you need to use a step down transformer.

    • +1

Yes, thought this would be general knowledge by now. Pioneer Australia will not be providing warranty with this. Whether the risk is worthwhile is up to you - buyer beware. Pretty much the same deal as anything else you get from Amazon.

  • Thanks good price, +1 for the transformer, will come in handy for the extra outlet for another US electrical purchase down the track, given we are always rip-off off in OZ for electrical.
OP or anyone, does this means you can plug up to say max 2000w power requirement using the transformer or only a fraction of the rated 2000w, as powering an Amp can use much more power than your typical entertainment gear.

    • I think as long as your total draw does not exceed 2000w for all devices plugged in, you will be fine. Like any good device, there is a fuse in there as a fail safe in case you over-do it.

As far as I can tell, 2000w is overkill for this amp, which is unlikely to draw even half that. But I doubt you can find many better deals than ~$60 so 2000w it is (at least for me).

  • also remember that transformers arent 100% efficent… the best PC power supplies are around 80+ efficent… so expect the amp to use atleast 20% more power… probably not too big a deal… id rather crack open the amp and replace the internal transformer! (use the cash spent on the 110 transformer to change over the amp transformer)

The SAA certificate number does not exist, like much of the cheap electronics gear on ebay it is not approved.
Whilst I encourage people to buy overseas, you need to know the risks. For example if your house burnt down due to an unapproved device the insurer may reject the claim.

  • By the way the power draw for the amp is 570 watts, but any decent step down transformer should state how many voltage amps it can handle like this http://dicksmith.com.au/product/M1154/240v-to-115v-step-down…

Slightly off-topic, but what is the 10% Off Ebay voucher? (I did a search but couldn't find any reference to this previously). Cheers.

    • Me too, I just done a quick search and came up with nothing.

    • I received an email from eBay on Friday with 10% off coupon code. Looked like a standard mail out. If you have an eBay account, check your mail..?

      • Nope, no email. Do you have a code?

        • Ahhh.. ok, I've just read the fine print. It looks like a personalised code that is one-use only and will only work with my account. eBay must only sent individual codes to select people. I will update the OP.

      • Do you mind posting the voucher code if its general to anyone, I usually ddnt check ebay mails, thanks

Buy this instead. No mucking about with transformers.

    • and probably better sound quality…

(personal opinion, not trying to start a brand argument)

    • Onkyo 709 for $530 American
      http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-NR709-7-2-Channel-Network-Rec…

Don't know if it is dual voltage, but would still end up being a better deal.
May need to use a forwarding service however.

      • That's also 120v only. You are better buying an amplifier from amazon Germany or Italy. They will ship all the Onkyo amps to Aus for €10-20 and they're 240v.

        • Wonder if an Onkyo dealer locally has spare parts for sale. I know Dynaudio parts can be purchased here.

      • better off buying the tx-nr709 from amazon.de for around $700ish delivered…240v, nothing to faff with.

  • I like pioneer better

  • +1

I purchased the vsx920 last year as I wanted wifi control via iPhone and TBH I really prefer my old Sony str1080 for sound.
I don't think I will go Pioneer again.
I would suggest testing out the VSX1021 prior to a purchase.
In saying that I'm sure if you weren't happy with it good old eBay is alway ur friend so you may not loose too much.
Feature wise Pioneer are great in my view so if you like the sound it's a good but.

  • Thanks for the informative descriptions. All OzBargain summaries should be this in-depth.

I would rank Onkyo much better than pioneer any day. Given the vsx-921 in america does not have Airplay, but the Euro/Aus model does? Go figure… anyway, you would be better buying this VSX-1021 from http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B004TRY3QW/ref=ox_sc_act_tit… . Its already 220-240v and it costs about Euro 431.03 shipped (since they remove VAT for non VAT countries) which works out to be about AUD$535. Why faff around with big, possibly noisy and ugly transformers? Plus cheap transformers are not electrically isolated, so there is a small chance that the 240v can cross over and blow up your equipment…rather spend good money on a decent isolated transformer ($150-200) for high end and expensive equipment….

    • Awesome, and thanks to all for sharing your opinions.
FarQ or anyone, maybe this is a dumb question but just wondering how do you order from the Amazon European sites that are not in English?
Has anybody has any good delivery experience for such heavy items?

      • google translate will fix that for the text
and the buttons are pretty easy to guess if you know amazon.com's layout

      • +1

Yes, amazon.com layout, side by side, and Google Translate could be of great help, though I took help of a German friend while ordering my NR609 from amazon.de, just to be safe. The shipment was tracked to US, Hawaii and finally Sydney but arrived at my doorstep in 3-4 working days of ordering. Just used a plug adapter lying at home, which costs few dollars anyway. Great buy for around AUD500 delivered.

        • AZ, Many Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

  • direct equivalent would be the 709 onkyo. Really the main differentiator is the 7.2ch pre-outs. If you DON'T want to run external amplification, the 609 will be fine (the one linked several times in this thread).

USA amps imo are a no-go-zone, but props to the OP for trying :)
