Moving to Queensland? - Why?

Hi everyone,

I know this is not a new topic, but why do a lot of people look at options of moving to QLD?

To me the house market and job market doesn't seem to be too cheap either.

Just here to clarifications

Cheers

  • Housing market is only cheap because people don't move there, as usual, people will ruin things once word gets out.

  • My family have planning a move to Melb for a while now. Moved to SE Qld from Melb in 2007 and first 10yrs was ok but last few yrs the heat is too much and I get sick from overheating. We rent and have an aircon but expensive to use it too often and it's not portable so a lot of the time I'm just too hot.
Rentals in Melb are much cheaper than here plus more jobs available too. The lockdowns don't bother me as I basically live as hermit anyway.
Looking forward to rugging up and enjoying the crisp 5-15c temps (yes I know it gets lower and higher) and not being a sweaty mess all dam yr.

Lots of ppl fleeing/leaving from Vic?

  • Costs just as much to buy in Orange NSW as Brisbane.. and it's warmer lmao.

After having lived in most of the state's in Australia we've come full circle and realised there is no better place to raise a young family than in Brisbane.
Mainly coz of the outdoorsy lifestyle, the laidback feel, good schools, it's safe and has great hospitals and most importantly the kindest nicest people with good values.

    Cheers

I moved to Brisbane from Perth in 2015 and have never looked back since then.

  • Miss QLD :(

I went the other way - I found Qld a great place to LEAVE …

too stupefyingly hot and humid - 26C and humid in Brisbane I would feel like 'kill me now'

oh - and what's not to love about a Police State (I grew up in Bjelke-Petersen and Russ Hinze corruption of fat drunk pigs bashing up aboriginals in King George Square - I saw once and walked up and asked what the cop was doing, and the fat drunk red-faced pig in uniform turned to face me, breathed alcoholic fumes over me and shouted 'get the (profanity) out of here or I'll bash you up too !!!' - ah … memories

I was amazed when I moved to Melbourne and one day saw young punks interacting with uniformed cops outside Flinders St Station - my reflex was OMG they're going to be arrested and bashed up ! - as I walked closer I saw the cops smiling and laughing - together with the punks ! I could not believe it - Dorothy, you're not in Brisbane anymore …

Now I live in Sydney - there's a reason it has the largest population - the nicest balance of weather year-round - perfect blue skies today, I'm about to go for a stroll - pity about the cold wind, but hey I'm just glad I'm not sweating in the sub-tropics half the year.

Have you ever spent a holiday in Qld, during summer? I mean up North? And just as the earth is supposedly warming up, you are contemplating moving into a hotter climate.
If you have been sub-tropical all your life, your body is not going to miraculously acclimatise.

I have lived in Sydney, Adelaide and recently moved to Brisbane.

Sydney was a rat race. Traffic was horrible (35 min each way from home to work). Housing (to rent or buy) was really unaffordabl, cost of living was high and stress levels were high despite the job opertunities.

Adelaide was really laid back and relaxing. Excellent schools, housing was very afforable (rented a 3bd house with garden, walking distance to city for $520/week). Cost of living was reasonable. I saved a lot during that time. Great place if you have a family. Only catch was that job opertunities were limited.

Brisbane has a nice balance and has the best of both worlds. Weather is fantastic (I hate the cold), lifestyle wise it's the best of the 3 cities. Very affordable. Not much traffic and I have found my time so far to be very enjoyable. It like living in Sydney without the rat race. I think qld gets a bit of a bad reputation for a variety of reasons but once you arrive you realise how much more it has to offer.

More Kiwis in QLD then in NZ

    • This is true

The reason I chose Qld as an option was because I could afford to buy a place. The rates and water are high, and it's taken a few months to find work. Another reason is I have ageing parents here.
I've not lived here for 40 years, so it's quite an adjustment. It hasn't really changed much, still conservative (backward), aircon a must, the road to GC is hell, nothing is open on public holidays, and I've been told my accent doesn't sound like a local … I'm sure I will soon. 😂
Step back in time … Welcome to Qld!

  • why do a lot of people look at options of moving to QLD?

source? because from my experience people are settling more and more in vic.

its the nicest state in the country. Adelaide is a boring retiree city which should not be a city, sydney is overcrowded, melbourne is full of hipsters and retarded politicians, tasmania, ACT, NT dont even bother, WA would be a nice option too but queensland has everything and more without the bullshit. youd have to deal with snakes, humidity, floods, etc. but most of that could be avoided if you live somewhere decent like the sunny coast

The weather. Brisbane has one of the mildest climates in Australia, that is the swings from summer to winter are the least significant and 'shocking' when compared with most other regions.

    http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_040214.shtm…

The coldest (on avg) it gets is 9.5C and the hottest is (on avg) 29.4C. We get some colder and hotter days than that but they are the avg. and makes it a mild summer and winter.

    • I'm moving south (Melb) as the heat up here is just too much. You say lows of 9.5 to highs of 29.4 but in reality it is most days 25-30 or more and a few days it's under 15 with a few less under 10. I have been enjoying the last week of mid teens at night and walking around in summer clothing. Brisbane weather is anything but mild.

      • It is a sub-tropic climate, you would die in the tropics.

My grandparents had a house in Melbourne and a flat on the GC and would spend summer in Melb and winter up here.

        • I lived in Cairns from Jan to March many yrs ago and yes it was humid but I was young and could deal with it. I also lived in Katherine (NT) for a yr a couple of decades ago and again it was very hot/humid the Dec we got there to about May, then it was rather nice till I left at the end of the yr.

Now I'm older and can't deal with the heat/humidity I need a dryer heat and more cooler temps than Brissy gets. I remember from living in Melb back early 2000's that it was gold in winter and hot in summer (I grew up in Sydney so this is nothing new to me). The biggest difference from Brissy is the intensity of the extremes and the duration. The joke about if you don't like the weather in Melb, wait a few mins and it will change is not a joke. It is this changeability that makes it better for me. I'm over weeks of it not going below 25-30 (incl overnight) and I can't afford to rely on aircon.

I drive rideshare part time in Brisbane and regularly pick up Victorians that have just moved up here or are on holiday scouting for places to live in the next few months.

The common theme on why they are moving is the way Covid had been handled, the weather and house prices. Those with families say they believe their kids will have a better life up here.

One thing they all say is that they can't believe how friendly we are up here compared to Victoria and to them that is a big plus. We are not as pretentious, rude and are more laid back apparently. Unless you meet a fellow Victorian of course :)

I can't believe they think their offsprings would have a better life in Qld than Vic, this is unreal.

    • You also vote for people like Pauline Hanson and Clive Palmer.

  • it's a grass-is-greener dream imagination

where house prices are cheaper, jobs tend to be fewer

I grew up in Qld and couldn't wait to get away from the stultifyingly parochial small-town thinking

where everyone knew you and your movements would be noted and gossiped about everywhere you went - urg

    • where everyone knew you and your movements would be noted and gossiped about everywhere you went

Isn't this called "community"? I lived in places where people next door would busily look into their phones to avoid smalltalk. I understand some people like that.

    Sydney for singles.
Melbourne if you have a family.
Brisbane if you’re old and love sunburn.

    • -1

      So wrong there

      Melbourne for covid
      Brisbane for chicks
      Sydney for the rich
      Perth for the miners
Canberra if you want a government job
Darwin is if you wanna join defense, also port owned by Chinese firm.

      • +1

        Most accurate so far.

      • +1

        Ha, truth hurts.
What do u do after u get the chicks??
Heat, insect bites and more heat.
Everything else is great for once in a lifetime visit.
I’ll stick to Melbourne, at least all the complainers have/will moved away. Shut the door while when you go.

  • +1

I dont know why they are moving here in such numbers but I with they would stop.

Melbourne should be quarantined forever. Not because of COVID, because of Melbournians. Stay in your containment state.

Were refugees from Dictator Dan's regime.

Please let us in! A recent assassination attempt involving a flight of stairs failed so moving to Qld is all we have.

      • AP is also a dictatorship gov but better than Dan.

        • Does she cause regular outbreaks and then condescendingly tell you she has the gold standard in contact tracing?

It's a myth as Aussie guys like Queensland ladies more

    • Most Qld ladies are more than likely from NSW, so there goes that idea.

  • We moved 5 years ago from Melbourne to the Wide bay area and we have been very happy.

    Pros:
    - Great weather (mild winters)
    - Short commute to work (10 minutes)
    - Higher pay (where we work there is a shortage of our skill sets)
    - Cheaper private education for children
    - Fresh produce and fish
    - Cheaper property

    Cons:
    - Cafes and restaurants are not as great.
    - Hard to move jobs due to limited work.
    - Limited entertainment

  • Because it's still liveable for a 2nd tier state, but at the same time the population is stable enough to allow Dan's murphy to open without a political blow back.

  • We moved to Cairns 28 years ago from Sydney Eastern subs, as we were fed up with traffic and cold winters and the kids had all grown up and living away, one overseas.
Homes are so cheap compared to major cities, like 10mins from CBD, a 10/20 year old 3/4BR, two bath, double garage aircon home in nice suburb around $400/500k, and built to withstand cyclonic conditions.
FNQ has no pollution, low rates from our brilliant can do council, gets hot and wet for 4 months year so we turn the air on, another plus is we can wear shorts the year round. Properties sell quickly and rental vacancy rate only 1%. with approx. 10.5% return on investment
There are so any great placed to visit, Palm Cove 40mins, Port Douglas about an hour, the tablelands etc. Note, no major cyclone has hit Cairns in decades, even then was not too bad, damaged old qld type homes and blew the bird cage over!.
Currently there is over 1B$ in Gov't roadworks and three new 5 star hotels have been built, new art centre and aquarium all open and multi M$ upgrade to our convention centre, new wharf completed and harbour dredged so largest ships afloat can now dock here.
So keep Cairns a secret and go to Google images and drool!..

    • I think if many people can WFH, that means rural living is not an issue if everything is set in place, infrastructure has improved over the past 5 years I feel many people are tired of living crowded suburbs where traffic just takes forevers from work to home. I just feel more people will move to FNQ and NQ in the coming up months, would be a nice lifestyle change.

    • We want to go to Cobbold Gorge wow! Love Cairns and Port Douglas and the stunning Whitsundays.

Love the snorkelling off the beach at safe inlets in Bundaberg.

Qlders get to holiday for discounted rates in between school holidays.

No one has mentioned the theme parks. Annual pass is only $99 for locals.

Seaworld in off peak is $99 p/n inc access to Seaworld, Movieworld and Wet n Wild.
