Will this work on a MacBook Pro M1?

    • -2

      Yes, I think so.

      • -2

        I think so.

        wtf

        • "I think so" means the product can work on a MacBook M1.
Any more questions, just feel free leave a comment.

    • Doubt it, it "requires your USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 device support DP Alt Mode" but I don't think the M1 Macbooks do.

      • -1

So you "think" Apple went backward with their USB 4 ports on M1 Macbook?

Apple's own dongle operates on USB-C/Alt-mode also.

        • Well I have one and know they did. For one the M1 only has 2 total display outputs and so only one can be used without virtualising the display via displaylink etc which, I know sucks, I use it 5 days a week :\

Apple's own dongle operates on USB-C/Alt-mode also.

Citation needed. The newer version that supports the M1 doesn't appear to.

            @[Deactivated]: https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MUF82ZA/A/usb-c-digita…. It supports M1 based MBP / MBA.

Alt-mode is required. Alt-mode basically means single direction of data flow (instead of bi-direction default for USB-C/USB 3.1 gen2/USB 4/TB3 data flow) since with graphics, you generally don't need bi-direction. Furthermore, more bandwidth is required for 4K, especially if you want HDR (so single direction doubles the bandwidth). It makes no sense not to use alt-mode (coz. if you don't, you are wasting half of the bandwidth) and since normally you do try to spare some bandwidth for USB 3 data passthrough (that part needs to be bi-directional), you would use alt-mode for graphics.

As for not able to do 2 "external" displays natively, that's due to Apple's GPU (embedded in the M1 CPU) currently. Essentially, the GPU only supports 1 internal display and 1 external display. However, we do need to wait till MBP 14, 15, 16 inch to find out whether M1X or M2 sorted this issue out. Honestly, if we compared to 13 inch intel based MBP, if you do want multiple external displays, I don't think they will all be 4K. A 14-16 inch MPB with AMD GPU is different due to AMD GPU being better. USB-C/USB 4/TB3 is merely a port, the GPU inside determines how many total displays it can support (natively).

The DisplayLink hack / workaround is not ideal, but it isn't a USB-C/USB 4 bandwidth limit issue. It's a GPU issue. Yes, M1 is quite powerful, but you don't generally get to have the cake and eat it from Apple.

@[Deactivated]: In case you still don't believe me, have a look at the youTube video from plugable.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEhoFz6ldSU

If you cannot be bothered watching the whole thing, just watch the bit it explains the 3 HDMI ports, basically, HDMI port 1 is Alt-mode (native via GPU), port 2 and port 3 are DisplayLink (USB hack - not ideal).

Link to jump straight to that bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEhoFz6ldSU&t=112s

Given that this CableCreation dongle only has 1 HDMI port, using alt-mode should work. Obviously, with a M1 MBA/13" MBP, you don't want to get 2 of these. By the way, since I have no experience on this particular dongle, I cannot comment on the quality and reliability of it. It's just technically, it should work. That said, I have not + voted this as I am still a bit cynical about the quality of this. Even if the display part works, 100W USB-PD passthrough… one of the reviews I read worries me a bit on that part. Another thing is I doubt in 4K, HDR is supported (due to the chipset used - so if not mentioned, assume no HDR support).

Honestly, USB-C is a mess and it's very easy to get confused. A lot of accessory makers would cut corners and even Apple initially did a poor job on its first version of the dongle.

            • @netsurfer: Thanks for your sharing. Perfect!
You can get multiple external displays for your 13-inch MacBook Pro after downloading a DisplayLink driver from displaylink.com.
Or have a look at the Youtube video from CableCreation.
Add 3 extra monitors to a 13-inch MacBook Pro

  • Do I have to plug my power adapter into this for this to work with my laptop??

    • No need for power adapter, plug and play.

      • Why is there another listing for the same adaptor for $10??

        • That one doesn't have power input, with this one you can charge your device too with a power input

  • +1

Don't be fooled… This adapter won't charge your Mac Pro and display picture Just picture signal.

    • Mac Pro has its own charging source, if you use this product, it doesn’t need to use the charging port.

Just tested this mrng, was able to use hdmi out to dell 34" and also charge my MacBook pro 16" at a time using the adaptor.

        • Thanks for your support.

Simultaneously power and charge a laptop or smartphone up to 60 watts while viewing the video.

    Hmm

    • Is there any questions?
      60 watts is for a 13-inch laptop.
Different laptops require different power wattage, and it also depends on the charger and cable you use.
Our product supports a maximum of 100W.

  • Can I use this on switch? So many haven’t worked and it’s getting lame trying to play on the tiny screen when I’m not at home but have access to TV/monitor

    • Don't think so. HDMI out on the Switch requires power + HDMI.

    • So sorry for that.
This one isn't compatible with switch.

  • Stopped working after 2 days, charging works fine, but hdmi doesn't, tried different cables, ports and displays. 😔

  • Hello,
    I'm so sorry about that.
Maybe you can do as following:
1.Try using another adapter to see if the HDMI port is broken, or if the HDMI port is selected correctly, because some monitors have more than three HDMI ports. When choosing HDMI, choose the one you plugged in.
2.Check the connection to see if there is any looseness.
If those don't work, just feel free to contact our customer service through the order.
    Hope it can help you.
    Have a nice day!
