Been contemplating a cheap AVR upgrade for a while, and this unit has been ticking the boxes for me. Cheapest I've seen it so far, only about $15.00 more than current refurb prices on it.

Compared to it's popular bigger brother - the RX-V6A - it loses out on Dolby Atmos & DTS-ES, is 5.2 rather than 7.2, 80w vs 100w, 4 HDMI ports rather than 7, multi-point YPAO (only single point) and no dialogue lift functionality. No deal breakers for my situation, but YMMV.

Nonetheless a seemingly well performing, well specced receiver for the price.

Yamaha have also recently announced that there will be a hardware fix for anyone wanting to utilise HDMI 2.1 properly - currently useful for anyone with RTX3 series, PS5 & XBox Series X.

  • Looks like this has a DAB tuner too Nice find

Big disclaimer required on these units — half the features advertised are not available yet.
Yamaha promised they would become available thru firmware updates, but it's been six months with no sign of them.

  • This or the rx-v385 for $385 as a simple 5.1 setup??

    • +1

I recently purchased RX-V385 and really like it. I plugged my PS5 directly into HDMI2.1 port on TV and use eARC with RX-V385. Everything works as expected.

      • Awesome. Thank you for the feedback.
I was going to pull the pin on the rx-v385… But was just wondering if I'm missing anything

No worries. Apple TV with Dolby vision and hdr also works well connected to 385.

Thank you for the new information about these getting a free HDMI board replacement. Grabbed one in a previous deal and was kinda wondering if they would fail to deliver on the features. This is great news.

Better solution than an add-on between device and receiver IMO. Just a shame it wasnt a simple firmware upgrade onlym

    • I kind of wish the add-on between device & receiver was an option though - while I personally don't need the HDMI 2.1 functionality right now, I may in the future - and don't really want to send the AVR away for a week to have the board replaced - which is what I assume the hardware fix will entail.

2 years should be enough time to sort it out if necessary though.

How are you finding the unit otherwise?

      • if they had any brains they'd fix the ones already in channel and put a sticker on the box that clearly shows the work has been done before you buy it

also be aware these things dont sound very good on music but that's par for the course for sub $1k units

        • Don't think they have the chips to do it. The fix isn't available for months and the new receivers without the issue, likely using higher end chips as well, aren't out yet either.

      • Its a fantastic unit. Feels identical in most ways to the receiver I replaced. Yamaha VX383 I think it was. Only it obviously adds standards I was missing with the older receiver. But the interface and how everything works is familiar so it's easy on me.

I needed (wanted) Dolby Vision support and 4k @120fps with VRR. I gambled on this knowing at the time there wasnt a solution for it yet but that it was promised and would hopefully be delivered on.

Once I have the new HDMI board i can hook my Xbox Series X directly to the receiver and hopefully have all the same features available as directly to TV except with sound not being passed through my TV back to amp where it seems to have sync issues unless mY TV outputs PCM.

  • If I don't need qll the extra stuff like airplay, is it worth getting this over the RX-V385 (the 385 is $297 vs $520 for the rx-v4a.) My setup is basic 5.1 and mainly streaming netflix else plex.
