HyperX Alloy Origins Gaming Keyboard (HyperX Red or Blue Switches) $104 (Was $229) + Shipping / Pickup @ JB Hi-Fi

280

This is generally a highly reviewed keyboard. JB only has the full size variant with either HyperX's own red linear or blue clicky switches.

It was $229 at JB Hi-Fi before the sale. Funnily enough I couldn't find the deal in any of the catalogues.

P.S. This is my first post so let me know if there's any room for improvement!

Edit: can be further reduced by $25 with this LatitudePay deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/627131

This can be combined with the Latitude Pay promo to save another $25. I just placed an order and got mine for $79, what a bargain!.

      Yep me too, perfect combination!!

Edit: forgot to add, thanks OP for your awesome first post :)

Ah damn I missed that myself, I bought it two days ago. Actually made this Ozbargain account because I was surprised no one posted it in that time. Luckily I used an old gift card I had lying around so $54 out of pocket for me (9 times out of 10 I accidentally let those expire).

But thanks for the info, I edited it into the post.

Not sure if the sale is related, but they recently got bought out by HP for over $400 million.

Should have posted that when it's on sale..

  • Damn.. no Aquas.

  • Had to return my razer Blackwidow elite under warranty and Amazon had no stock so they've given me a refund (would have preferred to wait for stock to come in but oh well)… So on the hunt for a new clicky mechanical keyboard. Can anyone comment on the blue switch version of this, any good? Or will it feel like a downgrade?

The black widow is definetely a tier above this type of keyboard, the keys are quite good though - especially the blues.

I’d recommend the Corsair K68 or K70 over anything though

      • Thanks for the suggestion. I paid approx $130 for the black widow elite, tbh hoping another one comes up around the same price. Some keys were starting to wear on it which is annoying, sorta thought they'd be nerd sweat proof but hey it couldn't deal with me WFH apparently. I did like the elite a lot so fingers crossed I can score another one soon, unless the corsairs have a really good deal on.

        • You're gonna need doubleshot keycaps of some kind. Most of the gamer brands come with regular painted keycaps and lasered legends that will wear off like that.

    • Haven't tried this keyboard but from recent experiences I prefer the build quality of HyperX products over Razer. I have owned a HyperX mouse and headset and have had no issues during the time I've owned them.

However, on the Razer side of things, the list of devices I've had fail are two raiju controllers, two naga hex mice, a naga molten edition, a naga epic chroma and a blackwidow keyboard. Most were replaced under warranty, and at least with these devices Razer was happy to post a replacement as long as I show them a photo of the device with a cut cord (although the cords are technically replaceable), but the failure rate is still too high.

      • I shall wait for another blackwidow elite deal or a similar keyboard at a good price. Ouch, not the best run you've had.

Yeah everything I've had from Razer does tend to be disappointing. From my Razer Blade laptop that doesn't perform as well as it should to a squeaky scroll wheel on my Blackadder V2 just out of warranty.

I don't have much experience with mechanical keyboards but I can confirm the build quality on this thing is amazing however I'm finding that the sounds of the switches aren't super consistent and the RGB is affected by the switch casing being red (only noticeable when you have it on white).

This price is a bit misleading for anyone interested, it’s fairly common for it to be in the low $100s so don’t let the JB RRP mislead you

I think it's never been this low (at least recently). The usual bargains are at around $130-$140 from what I recall. Even the previous JB deal I saw was for around that. I was watching it for a while before I got this myself for $138 two or three months ago.

I did see a previous deal for it around $140 though wasn't sure if that was one of those semi permanent sale prices. 104 still seems quite low to me for a keyboard like this

Also it can be further reduced by $25 at the moment

  • I was looking at getting this as an extra keyboard too, usually goes on sale for around this price.

  • This or the Logitech G512 carbon for $20 more?

  • hows everyone's experience with this keyboard?
    this or Keychron K4?

The build quality is amazing, 10/10, and the switches deliver what you would want. That said, its not perfect. The keys are very easy to misclick (but same goes for any linear keyboard with 45g actuation force). There is some metallic ping to the keys at times, but only really noticeable if you're going slow or releasing the keys in a funny way. Also, the key housing is a red plastic which is visible and affects the RGB when you have it on a static white, though it doesn't affect it if you have any other colour.

I don't have personal experience with the K4 so can't compare sorry. I think its more customisable than this if that's important to you.
