KFC Chip Box Poorly Filled

I always buy KFC when they run promotions like 24 nuggets for $10, or $4.95 fill up box.

I also always get the free chips and drink with the survey.

Every time, without fail, the chips are poorly filled.

The box may look full because there is one or two chips sticking out of the top. However, if you shake the box a bit, it's easy to come up with extra space. It's very easy to have blank air between chips. I would say that in every case, I could have added at least an extra 30% by mass/volume.

They should tell them to scoop once, and then shake the box for a few seconds to remove air, and then scoop again. It only adds 2 seconds to the serve time. But I guess the problem is not the service time, it's the ingredients they don't want to give away.

I used to work at a McDonalds making burgers, and some of the managers would be cheap and tell us to 'put on less sauce' or 'put on 2 slices of chesse on the double quarter pounder instead of 3' to save cost of ingredients, but I always sided with the customer (and if anything, gave away larger amounts when I was told by a manager to be cheap).

I realise that you are not going to get what the picture shows, but you can get pretty close.

I dont wanna deal with either

  • Does anyone ask them to top the chip box up?

    • +3

Pre-pandemic when ordering instore I would. Just do it when ordering 'could you fill the chips up please, the last few times I was here the box was barely half full'.

If you forget at the ordering stage, when they put the box or bag of chips down on the tray, pick it up and tap the base against the tray to get them all to settle to the bottom. At the same time squeeze the short sizes lightly to make the front and back bow slightly to counter the squeeze they used when filling it.

If that leaves a lot of space - which it probably will - look them in the eye and say 'could you fill these to the top please'.

The truth is that the server literally doesn't care. They'll happily give you a super full box if you just ask. The ones who push back are the managers, they take pride in making portions as stingy as possible and will argue rather than fill it up.

The truth is that the server literally doesn't care.

As someone who works up front and deals with customers, I honestly don't give a s**t if I give more food than I should. It doesn't affect me in any way at all.

  • Stuff happens, please don't fret over small things.

Tried KFC after a while with my wife last week. Missing piece of Chicken in the meal box.
My wife had three pieces, and I had two. Checked receipt- should have been three. Had already finished my box of food.
Didn't bother to ask for another piece, as it was terrible anyway, and trying to explain that a piece of chicken ( wings) at a busy time is not worth it.
But did provide the online feedback from the QR code in the receipt.

Prefer McDonalds over KFC, but Oporto is my preference on terms of quality.
Note: Not all McDonalds are good- esp in Canberra, it was terrible. The Yass valley one in NSW is the best.

And please note that I only ever have fast food once or twice a month.

  • Better than Maccas small chips, theres lucky to be 10 "chips" in their small serve

  • +2

I hate it when I buy the family box and the 2 "large chips" are half full. The Carrum Downs store is the worst for that. I feel its my duty to inspect the poorly filled box, eat a few more chips (as a tax for my wasted time ) and then tell them to full up the boxes to the brim. Which they do. This will happen about 4 out of 5 times i go through the drive through. Bloody tight arses . If I wanted a half serve, I would of asked for one!

    • +3

Lol, I take out a few chips before asking them to refill as well, for wasting my time

      • you are the man. The extra few chips costs these bastards about 5 cents. so why rip us off when we pay $35 for a family meal

  • You should spend 30% of your eating time in the gym to gain some mass/volume.

Was expecting this to be a HelloPam post. sigh

  • It’s definitely a thing. Mostly you just sigh and move on. So many things could lead to it, so never going to do a karen on the kid working.

  • Going on a 5 day fast now

So what are you going to do about it OP?

Do you even know what you pay for with a (FREE) box of fries?

Is it based on weight or volume or just filling the container?

    Nope. You have no idea.

And I don't see anyone else complaining about this. So obviously the problem is with you.

If you are buying a SPECIAL you are still certainly getting your money's worth

    • totally worth what he paid for it …

  • i see 3 options
    1) Ops asks KFC to compress the chips with a plunger until there is 0 air between the chips and they have a chip block the size of the box
    2) Op orders potato and gravy - no air
    3) Asks for potato and gravy in the chip box to fill the air gaps

    • for minimum wasted air gaps between the potato, one could buy - a potato …

but I know - that requires thoughts of - cooking - bleaatch and oogh !

i hate it when they give you old or lukewarm chips thats the worst, i just end up throwing them.

its not the quantity that should matter it is the quality, hate their coleslaw and potato and gravy its make the fillup boxes lower valued personally.

    fill survey & provide feedback.

get free chips & drink on next purchase.

  • Same when I buy a box of chicken. Open it up and there is heaps of space in there, they could have fit another 5 pieces in.

    • +1

They only give you the number of pieces you order.

Long time lurker here - I registered to respond because this gentleman's/lady's grievance struck a very deep chord.

Upon recently returning to Australia briefly after several years abroad, I was shocked and saddened to discover Red Rooster's 'Rippa Sub' (née Strip Sub) has been commuted by at least two inches. What's more - the girth of the bread roll had also shrunk noticeably. Ostensibly, in some varieties of human experience we are taught that length and girth don't matter, but in the domain of sandwich dimensions, and indeed chip volumes, this is patently not one of them.

In solidarity with all stooged customers of QSR chains, I think some form of mass protest is clearly in order. KFC chip guy, if you mount a campaign for justice, I am symbolically 142.86% behind you to make up for the 30% of rightful rhizomatic due out of which you were so despicably cheated.

Here's to being made whole again!

      Hi Marie,

A bittersweet welcome home. I want to thank you for confirming my suspicions about the Rippa's increasingly diminutive dimensions. It's hard to know when you're looking down at it every day.

If you are aware of a Facebook page where I can share my outrage and/or donate my thoughts and prayers I would appreciate that greatly.

      Sincerely,

      Little Rippa

    • Sounds like that Sandwich chain known as 'SubStandard'.

Don't buy KFC, you will benefit from it. It will be better for your health, the environment and even your wallet.

    • So Dominos instead,yah?

Buy a KFC franchise and then fill up the chips as you like, plus make many more people happy by doing it for them too.
Then realise the cost at doing so, and you end up cutting back chips, making you unhappy.
You end up selling the franchise and never eat KFC again.

    Such a sad story.

They stopped honouring the survey at my local KFC a year or so ago. They lost a lot of paid business from me. I'm healthier for it. So win.

    • I didn't know they could do that.

      • The signs are not even in display in that store anymore last time I was there. One of managers has been less than polite on one occasion too.

        • Fill out the survey and give negative ratings.

Apparently each stores 'needs' a certain amount of surveys filled out every month (or however they measure it).

          • @random12: I guess I can do it online but they clearly don't care. They aren't advertising it. They won't give you chips and drink.

  • I worked at KFC as a kid - not once were we ever instructed to do anything lower the chip count.

    thanks for the chuckle topic

I'll file this under the category of

"despite having a totally free choice as a consumer in a rich first-world country to ask for better service or I will spend my money elsewhere - I'm not happy ! - so SOMEBODY SHOULD DO SOMETHING !!!"

  • Rooster chips > Kentucky soggy cardboard chips. The directive at Macca's was to squeeze the front/back, rather than the sides, so less chips went in.

Ask for extra salt AND chips. Give that a try.

  • I have similar ideas when using coupons to buy dominoes.

I'm thinking less ingredients because of the coupons?

More likely, though, it probably is to do with the person making it not being paid enough to care.

  • -1

Did you pay for those chips?
    That's the reason.
Wow what a bad attitude to life you have.
You've done nothing and you expect everything in return.
