Kogan Desktop Computer - Worth the $200?

Hey everyone,

I see Kogan have this small desktop computer https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-atlas-g400-mini-pc-window…

Will it do the job of running 2x basic computer screens? Just for general watching youtube etc nothing overly fancy. Thanks

also can you connect to a wifi network? or does it need ethernet connected?

Maybe consider an old Dell, HP, Lenovo on eBay or Gumtree for $100?

    • I did but then was paranoid using a second hand PC. Been listening too to many darknet diaries podcasts..

        darknet diaries podcasts

One I should probably avoid then, as I've had a similar concern buying hardware off eBay/AliExpress. But then I get realistic about it: people aren't (generally) going to know/bother hacking hardware at that level.

Get a second hand system and just toss (or on-sell) the hard drive.

      • What's the problem? never heard of them.

If it's malware or something, that can easily be negated by wiping the boot drive or replacing the storage

or just chuck another drive in it and fresh install of everything.

I’d trust a random on gumtree more than Kogan.

    • Yep, something like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/184701099570?hash=item2b010b1e32… is IMO significantly better value.

Only has 1x HDMI, doesn't list another output.

    It has wifi :)

Should be capable to do basic stuff, just don't expect it to be snappy

    $860 nuc - $1400-2400 laptop - $200 nuc

    Wtf…

Laptop for work and a basic NUC for at home? Would prefer not using my laptop on home screens

Why tho? If you have a $1400+ laptop, why wouldn't you just plug it into a hub, rather than a nuc which has the same power as your phone

It has a shitty dual core Celeron processor from 2017. It doesn't even have Hyper-Threading/SMT.

It has 4 gigs of low power DDR4 even though it isn't a laptop and still has to be plugged in.

Only 64 gigs of storage and it's eMMC, not a real SSD. Real available storage will probably be in the 40s with Windows 10 installed. There is an M.2 slot for expansion, but that's also limited to 256 gigs.

And because it is all in such a tiny case, the cooling will either be terrible or extremely loud (possibly even both). Those two cores will be really overworked either way.

This thing is a piece of shit, even for an HTPC. Even if it was listed on GumTree or Facebook Marketplace for free, I would still check to see how far I would have to travel to pick it up.

It's cheap, but not good value. Anyone who buys that is in for a lot of pain.

Agree!! I have a NUC with a J3455 which is faster than this N4000 and it battles to run Ubuntu smoothly! It's just a torrent/file server computer. Windows 10 would be a struggle!

Looking at benchmarks, CPU is less than half as powerful as the cheapo i3-2100 I was using in 2011.

In general I think that people way overspec but this is really pushing it. I'd get a used Thinkcentre on eBay or something like that.

  • You are certainly only getting $200 of value in that PC….

  • N4000 Dual core + 4GB ram = no.

You would want 8GB RAM minimum, preferably 4 core (don't even need hyperthreading). Even an old i5 quad core with 8GB DDR3 would be better.

  • Thanks, think I will just get the power dock i think. I was doing a similar setup with my HP laptop an it was overdrawing power and ruined the fan and overheated the laptop so was avoiding this route.

Maybe try a laptop riser/cooler or something to keep better airflow?
