  • This product seems to be misunderstood by Ozbargain. Apple have created a high end set of headphones.
In reviews they show will in terms of sound quality and noise cancelling. They are better on those two metrics than Sony or Bose. Tear downs also show the construction to be of high quality. For example, milled aluminium is not cheap.

As with all devices, there are diminishing returns with increased spend.

Having said this they are still Bluetooth headphones. They are a device with a battery which is non trivial to replace. In my opinion, it's a lot of money to spend on such a device.

Don't forget Apple also own Beats, so there are cheaper options. You have to have a choice between great construction or an awful plastic construction.

I mean it is what it is. Lots of products confuse certain segments of Ozbargains. High yield BMW's, $3000 Sennheisers, $250 Mice, $1500 Herman Millers list goes on.

      • $250 Mice???

          $250 Mice???

Rural NSW says 'Hold my beer!'

        • I'd guess Logitech gaming mouse with a wireless charging pad.
Keyboards are where it's at if you want to go ultra premium/expensive. Entry Level custom, you're easily looking at $500.

The dealbreaker to me is that it's too heavy, and also the fact that it doesn't support any lossless or higher quality Bluetooth codec.

      • Airplay 2 will have more than enough bandwidth to stream lossless (think about how it currently streams 4K HDR 120hz content seamlessly)… just a matter of waiting for Apple to announce it. But yes, you’d be stuck on Apple devices to stream from.

        • Airplay doesn’t stream from your device I’m pretty sure. It’s like a link share which the receiving device then streams from the internet. Even if your turn off the sender your receiving device continues streaming. With Bluetooth data is transmitted and streamed constantly (which is why you can have drops and have to be within the transmission range unlike Airplay). Codecs allow higher quality transmission using lower bandwidth by using data compression.

@bindok: Phone mirroring is definitely streaming though.

Edit: Now I’m talking to myself

I totally agree with the weight. Even before spatial audio this had probably the widest soundstage of all three (Sony, Bose and apple) but I imagine (i returned mine) it will be even wider stage now. But just the sheer weight… man if I didn’t know about Sony or Bose I wouldn’t have known it, but when you shift from APM to Sony or Bose… it was like heavenly light…

    • I'd prefer a comment to a downvote, or if you must a comment in addition to a downvote.

      • or if you must a comment in addition to a downvote

I'm pretty sure that's how downvoting works. You have to comment why.

        • I'm talking about on a comment.

@ihfree: Oh, didn't realise it was you replying to yourself, and didn't realise the original comment was downvoted, as it's currently all square +5/-5.

            • @NigelTufnel: Yep, more interested in opinions on the topic rather than just a down vote. Ideally, discussing the merits of of the product rather than just hate or shock at the price.

    • Some people just have a made up price ceiling in their mind on a product. Like $500 for headphones or $60000 for a new car and they just think anything above their price must be a rip off

  • The thing that draws me to these headphones is the sound processing especially the spatial audio. It’s disappointing though it’s not available with the AppleTV. I’m guessing future updates will bring it to the AppleTV. The noise cancelling and transparency mode are also stellar from what I’ve read. All this is like what computational algorithms did to photography on phones. I’d love to see more of this sort of processing coming to headphones.
