Free Extra 5GB for Dropbox! [4.5GB Upload Needed]

2430

I stand corrected: it's a 5Gb bonus all up. Seems 500Mb is a seperate bonus for using the beta, and 4.5Gb is especially for this offer. Upload that little bit more if you haven't already :)

Probably should have added this earlier haha, but if you felt like being nice and hadn't already signed up - please use my refferal link :) http://db.tt/IKR2BhS0

Thought I'd stick this up given no one had yet and Dropbox posts generally go down well.

The way it works: first you install the new beta client of Dropbox which has automated photo and video uploading. You get a bonus 500MB as soon as you start using this feature, and an extra 500MB for each successive 500MB you upload, to a maximum of 4.5GB bonus data on your account. Better get uploadin'!

As Gizmodo advises:

Of course, as with any test software, you should be careful with backing up your backups before you dive right in…

Which is probably a very good idea.

ciab (comment below) has a possible method for getting the bonus data without uploading 4 gig. I would suggest if you do this at least have a good play around with how the new feature works - they're doing this as an incentive for you to test it so it could be nice to help them out a bit :)

  • the warning to back up your dropbox scares me a bit. Isn't it meant to be just a simple photo upload thing?

    • Yeah, but you're installing a beta client which can be buggy. It's just a precaution if it burps and decides to delete/corrupt something.

    • If it a generic backup tool. Point is you should always test any backup tool before assuming all of your data is safe. What if you do a simple mistake like press the wrong button?

      • and especially so as it is 'test software'.

What happened to Megaupload scares me more so be careful what you upload

      • I think Dropbox will be safe. This tool only imports photos from cameras and SD cards. So, in order to upload a copyrighted image, it'd first need to be stored on a camera or card. Dropbox could say with a decent amount of credibility that they'd done something to prevent dodgy uploaders.

That said, Megaupload was taken down because the people behind it are accused of crimes, not only their users. People probably store dodgy stuff in their public dropbox folders. But Dropbox is pretty open about the fact they can see the files you upload and will provide access to the US authorities upon request.

In short, you'd need to be pretty dumb to use Dropbox for illegal activity. They'll sell you out. They're not interested in that sort of user. If you won't pay for your movies, you probably aren't paying Dropbox either. :)

        • Megaupload provide access upon request as well, but you know a lot of those files are encrypted, the authority can't crack the file due to privacy laws. So they basically just shoot down the whole site…it can be a scary precedence if the US court upheld certain accused crimes…

        • Also DropBox may soon use a company that verifies copyrighted material by the files MD5 number or like YouTubes content match system.

Thanks to Please include this hack by ciab in the original post…

I used the following method to get my 4GB extra space without having to upload 4GB.

1.So I copied 4GB on to an SD card.

2.Inserted the SD card into my computer running windows 7 32bit and selected import pirctures and videos
using dropbox from the Autoplay dialog box.

3.Let dropbox do its import thing (where the dropbox icon in the task bar turns into a camera).

4.Once that is finished let dropbox do its indexing (hover over dropbox icon in the task bar and you will
      see it indexing the files)

5.Once dropbox has finished indexing “pause syncing” delete the files in the newly created dropbox folder
      named “Camera Uploads”

6.“resume syncing” and I got my free 4gb without having to upload the 4GB.

      • How do you get the Dropbox pic and video import to come up on the Autoplay dialog?
Ive got 3 copies of a video, totalling more than 4GB on the SD card. Im on Vista too,

  • I'll give it a shot, thanks.

I upload at 40 KBPS so (4000000/40)/3600 = ~28 hours :(. Damn ADSL1. I'm guessing most people will have 100KBPS uploads so it should take ~11 hours.

    • Thanks for figuring that out, that's exactly my upload :)

      • No worries. I think I'll just get the free 500MB for now since uploading at full speed completely cripples my internet.

        • Hi Mate,

This is one of the best dropbox deals I have found , thanks for posting it for all of us.

Can you pls remove the 4.5GB Upload Needed] as by following the method in the forum below there is no need to do the 4.5GB upload..

          Thanks,

  • +1

    Awesome!!!!
Edit: It says the free space is only for the length of the build testing?
Not sure if this is free for long term and you might lose data?

    • +2

It's kind of ambiguous, I originally read it as a permanent upgrade but re-reading it, it could go either way.

    • +2

I can't find this info in the forum. Do they retract it after the beta testing ends? Also, will this beta install separately to my current (stable) version or will I lose stability for all of my current dropbox data?

  • Good thing I can still leech my parents 200gb/month plan. Wouldn't be doing this on my 8gb 3G plan.

    • +9

Good thing I can leech off my Uni, no data cap :p

      http://www.speedtest.net/result/1748212745.png

      • Lol… I am pretty sure they would notice the 4GB upload from a single MAC. RMIT gave me a warning last year for downloading the Dreamspark softwares using their net.

        • +2

I'm considered staff rather than student. I download/upload a ton everyday for research :)

      • I'd be a little wary of this as someone somewhere is paying for it.

Also, I hate the asymmetrical nature of internet connections in Aus: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1748265784.png

        • I particularly hate the asymmetrical nature of NBN PLANS (not hardware).

        • +1

          Wait. What.

          Nice upload speed though. :(

      • wow, thats the speed that whole of Aus should be on,
Optus sucks, (not as much as vodafone though).. or Virgin

  • only got 250mb upgrade. WT?

    • Works flawlessly on OSX and I got the upgrade immediately (the main web page of your Dropbox account says you got a 250mb upgrade but the actual amount is 500mb), double check your before and after quotas.

  • +1

Just a FYI guys, if you use Windows or Linux or Android you can get 5gb of free storage and auto sync of directories via one.ubuntu.com

I have Phone automatically sync every photo I ever take. Makes for the perfect backups for me.

Good for those who has HTC phone that can run 4.0 roms.

  • How quickly does the upgrade happen? (The initial 500mb)

    • +1

      I've already got mine.

      • Didn't realise you had to import something. Worked now :)

  • I tried this this morning with two different phones, and a camera, on both my desktop and my laptop. Nothing worked.

    • +1

You need to enable the autorun popup.

      • Could you elaborate?

        • when you plug in your phone/camera, the autorun popup opens(if it is enabled), then you press "import images and video using dropbox"(or something like that)

if autoplay doesn't open up, go to My Computer, then right click on the drive and click "Open Autoplay", then choose the dropbox option

        • When I plugged in one of the phones (Galaxy Nexus), I got the autoplay popup, and chose the import using dropbox option. Dropbox told me I had no new photos (a

The other phone and camera didn't give a popup. There's no "Open Autoplay" option when right clicking on the drive either.

I just got this from the link provided

If you want to upload photos from external hard disk or USB driver.
Make sure your photos at DCIM folder, droxbox only detect if you have photos in this folder.
Or your will get there is no new photos message.

        • Ok, I finally got it to work thank to this tool: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylan…

        • +1

autrun fix doesn't work on 64 bit dam it!

      • where is this on the desktop version?

      • If you're using Windows 7, click Start, type in autorun and press enter. Then look for your device and click either 'Ask me every time' or 'Import pictures and videos using Dropbox'. Then reconnect your device and you should be good to go.

        • Thanks, but can I not sync photos etc already on my desktop?

        • @kiwipride

you could place photos on a usb then do it through there, otherwise I don't think you could upload things from your desktop(for this to work)

        • typing auotrun gives me one thousand autoruns. (from programs etc.) can't find the one I need.

        • +1

          try what i suggested here

when you plug in your phone/camera, the autorun popup opens(if it is enabled), then you press "import images and video using dropbox"(or something like that)
if autoplay doesn't open up, go to My Computer, then right click on the drive and click "Open Autoplay", then choose the dropbox option

        • Not giving me a autorun option when I right click my iphone drive. Strange.

        • Sorry, try 'autoplay' or go into the control panel and click on it.

        • +1

          Thanks Kheob. Autoplay is it.

  • +1

whats the advantage over dropbox? say compared with skydrive which gives me 25gb of storage per email address

    • +1

Better third party support. That's the only reason I'm using it over SpiderOak. There are a ton of apps with DropBox integration.

    • +5

Let me see.. I have an iphone, an android phone, a pc, pc laptop, a mac desktop, a mac laptop, and my ipad.. All synced with dropbox.. now lets see skydrive match that!

    • Don't forget skydrive is likely to have better support, a longer life span, increasing storage and is already built into mobile and anything with http. Dropbox is nice though because you can share folders, I dont use skydrive for that.

      • +2

        likely to have better support,

On Windows, maybe. Dropbox works fine (for me) on Ubuntu and iPhone as well.

        a longer life span,

Microsoft have a habit of dropping support for unprofitable products - see "Plays for Sure" and the Zune store.

Dropbox only have one product (so they have to support it) and I suspect it's pretty profitable (so it'll be around for a fair while).

    • You can use Windows Live Mesh and get 5 GB for syncing but If you need more space to sync data, you can't go wrong with Dropbox (or SugarSync). Skydrive is more for manual uploading (or you can map a network drive to it if you like)

  • Still on 2Gb all I need.

    • Yeah, I've got 6.4GB and I've only used 100MB lol which is all my Uni stuff.

  • I think it is only for testing period.

"Another day another build. We're trying to snipe all the most common bugs. Keep plugging in those cameras!
During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 4.5GB total."

    • That doesn't say that the free space will be removed once the beta period is over, only that they are offering to add it during the beta period. It doesn't say they won't remove it either, but based on past experience, I don't think they will.

    • +4

Why would they remove it and then delete your data? Surely they'd have a number of angry users on their hands that are trying to beta test their product..

      • also remember moores law, data storage and computing becomes a cheaper exponentially overtime…

I don't think they will take it back…

  • I don't get the extra storage for automatic upload - so you only get the extra free space if you have that many photos/videos to upload through Camera import?

    • so you only get the extra free space if you have that many photos/videos to upload through Camera import?

      Basically any external storage device

USB, Memory Cards(SD, microSD), Phones, Devices that have a storage device(PSP)

  • I am getting autorun come up but there is no option to import to dropbox

    • Did you download the beta client?

      • yes I have the beta client 1.3.12, I installed it on my work computer (Vista). I will try it on XP, Windows 7 and Mac OSX when i get home

UPDATE Does not look like it works with Vista 64

        • Read this note they have
On XP and Vista, it relies on the Windows Image Acquisition Service. If this service is not started, please start the service and reinstall Dropbox to use this feature. On WIndows Server, you may have to install the Desktop Experience feature.

Open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and open Services. Check that the following services ( check them in th order shown below ) are all showing as Status= Started and Start-up Type= Automatic

  • "The photo import feature is not available on Mac 10.4 and Linux." —> Great, so no extra space. Shouldn't have I bothered installing this.

    • Seriously.. 10.4? That came out 7 years ago.. what do you expect?

      • It was the Linux part I was upset about. The software I'm running is about as up-to-date as you can get.

        • You could always install it onto a Windows VM just to get the extra storage. Once it's there, it won't disappear..

  • +2

For anyone having trouble (Windows 7):

    1. Make sure AutoPlay is enabled: Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Autoplay -> Check the checkbox that says 'Use Autoplay for all media and devices'.

    2. Use any external device (any device including an sdcard, external hard drive ANYTHING you can plug in). Create a folder called DCIM and put another folder called Camera inside DCIM. Put all your photos and videos here.

    3. Unplug the device and plug it back in.

    4. Autoplay will come up now and ask you what you want to do.

    5. Just select Dropbox to import photos and videos.

    For Android phones:

    1. Make sure AutoPlay is enabled as above.

    2. If you're using a phone like Galaxy Nexus or Asus Tranformer (MTP device) and you have photos on your phone or tablet, as soon as you plug in your phone/tablet, AutoPlay comes up and you can choose Dropbox as the option.

    3. If you're using an older Android Phone or any Android phone or tablet that uses internal/external storage like the Galaxy SII, Galaxy S, HTC Desire etc, then connect your phone to computer and mount your storage from the Android Notification bar and Autoplay will come up. Choose Dropbox here and that's all there is to it.

If you're still having trouble (as I was):

      http://www.mydigitallife.info/fix-windows-7-autoplay-dialog-…

I had to use RegEdit to change the key at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun to 0x00.

      • Namarrgon, you sir, are legend! Freaking worked!

        • I second that.

But damn this dropbox software is using a lot of CPU for what its doing. All it has to do is copy some files off an SD card and then upload them. There is no reason it should be using 40%+ of a quadcore 3.4GHz C2D just to do that. It should be using DMA for most of it, so like 1% CPU usage. I wonder what else its doing.. <cue twilight zone music>

      • Thanks Namarrgon, that worked for me too! Much appreciated!

    • If ur still having troubles:

      1. Start -> type "run" into the search box then [enter] -> run box is open, type "gpedit.msc", [enter]
      2. A new window is open. Navigate to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> AutoPlay Policies. Click on it.
      3. On the right hand side, double click "Turn Off AutoPlay" and set it to "DISABLED"
      4. Do the same to "Turn Off Autoplay for non-volume devices"
      5. Repeat step 2,3,4 for "User Configuration"

      Re-insert the stick/camera card
Autoplay should run properly (or right click -> Open Autoplay)

any idea if this actually permanent or not?

  • Thanks heaps, just wondering how much other people have managed to get all without talking specifically about this offer. I'm currently sitting at 5.38GB's hopefully with another 4GB to go once I've uploaded these photos, so 9.38GB all up.

    • I'm at 5.4GB at the moment

      • how did u get the extra 4 gb?

        i did this
and I am only up to 8.9gb

        • Doesn't seem to be working for me either, I had 4.5, and am up to 5Gb despite doing what you said. in the meantime it actually uploaded 150Mb… and reckons its got 16 hours left!

        • i mean it does work..i got an extra 5gb..

but how did u get the other 4gb?

    • Brilliant! Thanks so much. This will save me two days of uploading at 20KBps!

    • thanks

but i hope they don't catch on
and cancel the free 4gb for anyone that cheated..

Found an easier way but only works if you have > 4GB in photos or videos stored in Dropbox. Just copy 4GB of photos and videos from Dropbox folder to an SD card then import them from the SD card using the Dropbox importer…no uploading or indexing is required as it detects the files are already in your Dropbox. :)

The imported photos & videos are also renamed to the date and time when they were shot…nice touch.
