Dumb question but does using afterpay affect your credit score? Genuinely no idea

  • +3

It shouldn't impact your "score" since they don't perform an enquiry or report failed debt repayments, but I have heard banks will view it negatively while getting a home loan. Banks normally ask for 3 months worth of statements.
Edit: meant to reply to above.

    • +1

So it shouldn't affect but it will.

      • +1

Yeah it does. It's a hit on your name and they will question if you have paid it off.

      • It won't affect what is known as your "credit score". This isn't really used much in Australia, unlike the USA

        • But you heard that banks "look negatively at it" when considering your home loan :)

Overall quite a confusing message here.

I guess better not to buy via Afterpay if you're about to get a home loan.

          • +1

@pizzaguy: Not really confusing. It's very similar to credit cards. It won't affect your credit score (which is calculated by credit reporting agencies) unless you miss payments. However, if you have significant amount of debt/ongoing repayments (whether this is due to loans, credit cards, BNPL etc.) banks might see you as a riskier lender and either decline the loan or only finance a smaller amount.

            • @LoungeLizard: Yes but even applying for a credit card - approved or rejected is a ping on your credit score is it not?

    These used to be $630-$650

Thanks. Will remember if we ever go into another global pandemic

  • Is this machine woth getting for making primarily long blacks and only occassional capuccino?

    • -1

      No. 7 11. For $2

    • +1

Not really, a single boiler would be enough but the cost/value of this machine is very good. Maybe look at a gaggia classic pro and add a pid.

    • +1

I drink long blacks every day with this machine.
I also make milk coffees with it.

This is a great home unit, making Cafe quality coffees. Better than many cafes, if you learn how to pull a shot.

    • Thanks for the feedbacks!

      • +3

Having had all of that feedback, keep in mind that "cafe quality coffees" also require you to have fresh(-ish) beans and a grinder, which isn't included with this machine.

        • +1

True. It works in four parts.

          Good Coffee beans
          Decent burr Grinder
          Decent Machine
          Barista or self taught

    • Get a Breville with a built in grinder for that, e.g. Barista Express.

  • +2

Please do the justice to this machine by pairing with a decent grinder. I recently upgraded to a Baratza Sette 270. The espresso you get from this machine is on par with a cafe quality if not better.

    • Agreed, I pair this with a niche zero and some good beans from a local cafe - makes brilliant coffees.

      • +1

Niche Zero gets a lot of mentions in Oz Bargain. Not surprising as it is highly regarded in international reviews and is a well regarded single dose conical burr grinder with a cult following amongst coffee aficionados. Although it did retail for well over $1000 locally last year (RRP was actually close to $2000) it is no longer distributed in Australia and local support for owners will be diminished.

At under $500 the Sette 270 is the logical and far more reasonably priced choice. And what's more it is sold and serviced Australia-wide.

But if you are keen on getting a high quality single dose grinder then the COFFEE TECH DF64 Flat Burr Single Dosing Coffee Grinder might be worth looking at. Distributed from NZ in our part of the world it can be had for around AUD$750 delivered here. Although it too is currently out of stock.

        • At under $500 the Sette 270 is the logical and far more reasonably priced choice. And what's more it is sold and serviced Australia-wide.

Yeah, and is 95% plastic inside and regularly fails after certain amount of use. Google the problems people are having. Would not recommend based on that.

@findingbargains: A great grinder at its price point is what the reviews say, much like this Dual Boiler. But not infallible. And luckily we live in a country with statutory warranty guarantees for failures that far exceed manufacturer 'guarantees'.

But hey I've provided 2 options and commented on a third.

So tell us what grinder you would get and at what price, one that does not have issues or people being negative on 'google', based on your expertise?

            • @FitzChivalry Farseer: I am not an 'expert', just going by an article I saw where they exposed the poor build quality of its internals, which is not adequate for an appliance that has to withstand high mechanical forces on a daily basis. This is supported by a lot of reviews complaining about a high rate of failure. Why bother going through the headaches of claiming statutory warranty etc, now that we have more information about the unit and its shortcomings. I don't disagre wih your other grinder suggestions.
This bloke reckons he bought a Mignon Eureka Specialita for $540 shipped from Europe, which I think is a good alternative for a little bit more money. Yes, a downside is that an imported unit would likely not be covered by a local warranty. Therefore it depends on individual appetite for risk. Anyway, my whole point is to indicate the high failure rate of Sette units, mainly due to build quality of its internal components, which I would think is an important consideration when you are paying almost $500.

              • +1

@findingbargains: I did the same thing and it has saved me hundreds of dollars.

Another option that's around $150 cheaper is the Mignon Silenzio. Smaller burrs, no screen but otherwise very similar.

    • Even the Sette 30 is sufficiant. Same running gears as it's bigger siblings without the bells and whistles. It's about $100 more than the Breville Smart Grinder Pro but definitely worth it.

    • How about the Breville Smart Grinder Pro? Not good enough?

      • What I read/see from reviews is that Breville Smart Grinder Pro grinds can create a lot of clumps. Uniformity is not good compared to prosumer-level grinders. Since dual-boiler has a industry-standard 58mm portafilter, it is less forgiving than the portafilter you get in Barista Express/Pro (54mm).

  • Can you apply the code AFTPY15 without paying with afterpay? as I don't have afterpay account. When I select pay by Visa or Paypal and apply the code I get message "To use this code, please select the Afterpay payment option." Thanks

    • +1

While there was a bug for a few minutes that allowed you to use any payment method, it was fixed very fast. Afterpay is free to use, but can have some negatives.
I believe afterpay are running these sorts of deals to increase their user count/funds managed to keep their share price high/make a company sale look more enticing.

I'm quite happy to use afterpay to take advantage of these deals, but its a choice you need to make yourself.
You can immediately pay off the "debt" in afterpay, if you do not like having it there. Need to click ab out 8 times to make all the payments.

    • On this video James Hoffman is comparing this machine to $3000 machines and he picks it as one of his two favourites. Is this the same model? Why does it seem to be so much cheaper here? Because it's Australian?

I guess if he thinks it's as good or better than the $3000 machines then it's a no brainer hey?

      • Yep - now just have to wait for the price to return to something similar. Can't find it for less than 1k now.
