Best 65"+ TV for under $2k

Hi Everyone,

I don't have much experience in the TV and soundbar realm so i hope that y'all can help.

I'm replacing a shithouse 51" LG TV I use in my living room I've had for about 8 years. The panel is so dark I cannot see darker shows, the UI sucks, it doesn't respond to remote control inputs - I'm done with it. I'm also going to buy a sound bar at the same time if that makes any difference. Tv <2k, Soundbar <$500.

Here's how I use my TV today for context:

  • I sit 2.9m from the panel on a couch.
  • The room is well lit, dont know how to measure it but one side of the house is 75% window and it's close enough to north facing. I have the curtains open most of the time, so I guess brightness might be important
  • I play some pS4 occasionally, mostly Ride 3 and 4 [motorbike game] so I would like something that can keep up with pS5 in the future. That makes up about 10% of time watching.
  • The other 90% of my time is spent watching netflix, amazon prime, foxtel etc. Sometimes movies but mostly <40min shows. Almost never FTA as I don't have an aerial and haven't been able to get the channels to appear without one. Nothing good on FTA these days anyway besides ABC Iview.
  • I plan to buy a sound bar at the same time if that's a consideration. I now watch almost everything with english captions because I cannot hear anything that goes on with this current setup.
  • I feel 65" is a good size but happy to hear arguments to go larger, of course.
  • My current TV unit is 1200mm long and would be pleased if the TV feet fit within those dimensions.

  • I am partial to Samsung TVs because of their UI [i think it's great] but I'm happy to look at LG again because I know they do the OLED technology well. I've had OLED recommended to me because of the brightness of my place.

Let's say <$2k for the TV, and <$500 for the sound bar. But of course happy to spend less.

Really appreciate and value your inputs - thanks all!

  • Hisense Q8 range is outstanding bang for the buck. Pair it with the HS312 soundbar and you're looking at maybe a tick over $1500 for the lot.

    • Yes recommended by Choice.

  • Subscribe to Choice for 3 months and read their latest comprehensive report on smart TVs. Well worth the investment. From memory, LG ranked highest.

  • Look for a unit that has decent up scaling. Then look up the review at what ever sites to that kind of thing, like https://www.rtings.com/tv

  • I'd go a Sony x9000 or x9500 if you can find one under 2k. 2nd option for me would be the Hisense q8 as mentioned above. The Hisense is brighter so that may help you but the Sony's better overall.
