Starbuy asked for this deal not to be posted.

    • Asked whom?

      • +2

        The recipients of the email.

      • Offer came via member's newletter email, was stated there.

        • Thanks, that makes more sense.

That's what you call clever marketing, secret sale… ssshhh don't tell anyone as you know these expensive watches will fly out the door if people find out:) haha
Thanks OP ordered 1x for each of the kids and 2x for wife and I.

I think Starbuy get a pretty good run on OZB, I have ordered on previous deals, so if you don't want to sell your products then don't place on your online shop:/

      • It's not clever marketing .. what do you think will happen to their agreement to sell Oris watches if they have big discounts splashed around the internet?

        • -5

Frankly, I couldn't care less lmao. Why on earth are you defending luxury watchmakers?

If I can't buy it from them, I'll buy it elsewhere. Brand loyalty is for chumps.

          • +1

@runean: So tell me how to get 25% off Apple products?

They have a nicely controlled retail network .. the retailers cannot just splash around 25% discounts or they will lose their account.

I'm not defending luxury watchmakers .. I am educating you on the ways of the retail world.

Let me know when you get an account with Nike and you can sell the latest runners at 40% off and make a nice 20% profit with an unlimited market by undercutting every other retailer in the world. .. I dont think you'll have your account for long.

            • -1

@matt-ozb: Oh, that's easy! I save 100% by not buying overpriced junk that sells on brand recognition.

Who on earth are you talking to? I'm a consumer. I'll never sell Nike's. But I'll sure as shit buy them from wherever they're cheapest, and I don't care if that place loses their partnership over it. That doesn't affect me whatsoever.

I exploit corporations at every opportunity possible. But thanks for educating me. Do you know anywhere I can get some boot flavoured gum?

              • +1

@runean: You still don't get it.

Nike is an example .. do you think anyone can start a cheap website and buy Nike shoes at wholesale prices and undercut every other retailer? The retail world doesn't work like this.

I'm not saying that Oris is an amazing brand .. it is not my favourite brand either … just don't screw the retailer or they will lose their account and the next person that wants to buy an Oris will have one less retail option.

So when you are looking for your next pair of Nike's, you might have one less option when the retailer is trying to help you with discounts, but someone screws the retailer and posts the awesome deal on the internet.

                • -1

@matt-ozb: You're correct on all points. And so am I.

The internet is huge. There will always be places to buy cheap shit. I couldn't care less if one collapses. And I couldn't care less if a brand decides they don't want my money anymore. As I just said, there will always be other places.

Imagine choosing to pay asking price on stuff. I think you might be looking for OzGrandstanding.

                  • @runean: I see your point.

I am starting to pay the asking price on stuff these days … I walked into JB last week and paid full price for a robot vacuum $599 .. bit of a shock but nice to have immediate gratification for once in my life :)

          • +1

@runean: I'm a bit late here, but the point is the welfare of Starbuy, who are a decent bunch of people. Courtesy to a retailer that is good to the community is not exactly a tall order.

    • +6

I've easily spent a few grand at Starbuy over the past few years.

It's not baller money but I'd hate to think I'm missing out on sales because I don't like signing up for newsletters.

      • Either that or they lose their licence to sell Oris when big discounts are splashed around the www. Up to you.

        • -1

Either they're able to offer sales or they're not. As a consumer if I'm a repeat customer of a business and they're having secret sales for some of their customers that's not a good reflection of the watch brand.

Secret sales because "we can't upset the precious watch companies" is a wank.

The only exception I'd make is if Starbuy specifically advertised signing up for their newsletter as providing access to secret sales.

          • @Shard: Let me know how to get 20% off current Apple products.

Maybe a sneaky cashback promotion to sneak around the discount .. or you pay a high price on eBay and then eBay give you the discount out of their high fees .. etc.

            • -1

@matt-ozb: I don't buy Apple. Crap products, crap prices, crap company.

    • -1

Do they fear they will sell too many? I only ordered 10 so far…

  • -2

It's a pity that Oris goes on sale because it seriously devalues the brand.
IMHO they're a bloody good quality watch with history and engineering to back it up.

This just demonstrates to people that they can wait for a sale and buy it at a significant discount. Not ideal to keep a brand's prestige.

Still it was my first luxury watch and i regret selling it.

If i had $2700 I'd purchase this bad boy https://starbuy.com.au/oris-gmt-rega-limited-ed-748-7710-428…

    • +2

I do agree it doesn't help the brand when online retailers have sales like this as people come to expect a discount and resale value (not especially strong with Oris) takes a further hit.

In saying that though, anyone who isn't an impulse buyer would have done their research and should know they would be able to get 20% off Oris at a physical AD anyway. Whilst the end result for the buyer is almost the same there is a lot less damage done to the brand having the discount negotiated at the physical point of sale than broadcast in huge numbers across the internet for all to see. IWC is another luxury brand of higher quality (compared to Oris) which suffers the same problem. The brand is devalued because people know RRP is a joke and you can easily get a big discount.

Omega is trying to move away from discounting as well but it is going to be hard when they keep jacking up their prices. The new Speedmaster 3863 is a prime example of jacking up the price too much and if there is no discount people won't buy it because they know they'll take a bath on resale.

  • +2

For that price, I am expecting the ability of Chronokinesis

  • Nice watch with in-house movement. I love the transparent backing that showcases the movement!

    • +4

Seriously .. this is not funny.

But it was funny for the first 100 uses of this joke.

      • first time I seen a watch for this price, just fyi

        • Never heard of a Rolex? I would be buying 10 if they were Oris prices.

Don't get me started on AP, Lange, PP (which you never really own… cause even if you could afford, they wouldn't sell to no-name ozbargainers like us)

  • I looked at Oris many years ago - when Mark Webber had a deal with them.
I remember they were available to purchase from Peters of Kensington (I suppose they stopped selling them now, haven't been in-store in years).
Interesting deal, but not for me.

Should we call you the pot, or the kettle?

  • I agree with your advice on the Aquis calibre 400

  • +1

Really like everything about the Oris watches except for the hands. Seems like every watch I like there's a feature that irks me, and that irks me greatly.

    • Wait till you see the exclamation mark at 6pm/am.

  • +5

According the Oris website, the 400 model should be AUD $3,100. https://www.oris.ch/en/watch/oris-aquis-date-calibre-400/01-…

Soooo, maybe not such a good deal.

    • Hmmm interesting every retailer has it for $4800.
      Good find.

    • That is very interesting. Last time I looked the Oris website was the same as Starbuy RRP and I don't think you could order direct. I clicked through and it looks like the Oris site is shipping from within Australia as delivery is 5-6 days.

Every other retailer still lists the RRP as $4800 as well so either Oris have slashed prices for direct purchasers or the prices on the website are wrong. I quickly ran the numbers and 3100 Swiss Francs is ~$AU4500 which is pretty close to $AU4800 as well. I don't have $3000 to check what's going on though lol.

I've contacted three ADs and it's typo as I saw this on the website last night. They haven't changed it yet.

Edit - if it's not a typo, then worth the shot.

      • +1

I cracked the credit card out of the safe and ordered a Calibre 400. I'll let you know what happens. At worst they cancel it and at best I can flip it for a few hundred lol.

        • Or you can also use it :)

      • Correct, it's a pricing error. Was posted in a watch group I am in last night coincidentally…

        • Yeah I saw one get posted. We're probably in the same group lol.

          • +2

@xaykogeki: I guess you want ruin the deals for everyone by posting online when they clearly said not to do this?!

Did you know that the manufacturers will choose their retailers very carefully to ensure that the pricing is nicely controlled across the market?

For example, do you think that I could start a simple website and then get an account with Nike or Apple and start undercutting everyone and I make millions?

Big discounts splashed across the web and it will be ruined and you will be paying full price .. hope you're happy with yourself.

      • +1

Wow. Just got a shipping notification. Oris honoured the price of $3100 on their website lol.

    • That link now shows $4,800 AUD

  • "The coupon code you entered has been disabled so it can't be used."

  • They have disabled the coupon code.

It says "The coupon code you entered has been disabled so it can't be used." when I tried to check out.

  • Ashford still cheaper than this deal lol

I recently got a 40% off code for a jeweller via a watch forum. Cost me USD20 for a month's usage. Bought a Garmin, and even taking into account USD20 fee and USD35 delivery I saved AUD150 on the watch. They asked me not to post the code, so I didn't. I did a Google search for the code and it didn't show up, so looks like others haven't posted it. I guess they pass the member's name onto the jeweller as a check but I don't know. I asked the watch forum if I could post their deal with the jeweller on here, they thanked me and said no.

If the owner asks not to post it, why post? I got the post from Starbuy and it clearly says please do not post. End result is coupon cancelled.

    • I think I know the jeweller and forum you're referring to. Better not to share that one.

      • +1

The OP of this ozbargain would be happy to share .. then screw it up for everyone for the future.

I'm not buying off Starbuy again. I bought a watch a year ago from them which had a leather band. Both leather loops broke and aren't covered by warranty as it's deemed wear and tear. I only ever wear the watch to work and I work in an office so it's not like the watch was under any duress. The leather loops only lasted a year. I contacted Starbuy who blamed the manufacturer and told me to buy a whole new band. I've got other watches with leather bands that the leather loops lasted longer than a year

    • Straps can be really cheap. Good discussion to follow, https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/best-of-ali-xpress-straps…. Since going veggie I've gone off leather:) and now prefer perlon. You get a range of opinions from very positive to very negative. I'm waiting for https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33040130915.html?spm=a2g0s.9…. Have bought NATO's before and they were OK.

      • I'll have a look at those links

    • Leather straps are a consumable. No watch retailer or brand is covering them under warranty (exception if broken on arrival).

You got a cheap strap from the watch company, not Starbuy.

      • I contacted the watch company as well. I was well aware they aren't covered under warranty but I expected them to last longer than a year especially when I don't wear the watch every day. I've got 2 watches that are 5 years old that were cheaper and the loops are still intact. A company should stand by the product it sells. If I buy something from Bunnings/Target/Kmart etc then I take it back there for resolution. They don't wipe their hands of it
