  • anybody recommend / dont recommend this ? thinking of buying this and not having to buy another HD for..a while

    • why not buy it?

pretty good price for a 2tb usb 3 ext hdd.

if I needed one of these then I'd buy it.

      • Plus its a sexy drive.

    • Now obsolete and a run-out model since Samsung apparently stopped producing HDDs.

They have a very good reputation for reliability and performance as a USB 3.0 drive and a 2 or 3 year warranty, I think.

They were on special for $100 at some places last year but are now becoming scarce as old stocks dry up.

I was thinking of getting one or two but decided to stick with my current strategy of using external USB 3.0 caddy-type holders and internal 3.5" drives, preferably Hitachi (and NOT Seagate or WD).

      • Hitachi won't be around for much longer - they are in the same boat as Samsung.
Hitachi is in the process of selling HDD business to WD.

        • ~ sigh ~

    • I've been using it as auto-backup hdd for close to a year now and its great. One really annoying thing about it though is that it keeps spinning down when not accessed for a while and makes an annoying spin-up sound every hour when my computer backs itself up. I've had to install some generic software that performs a read to the hdd every 10 minutes to ensure that it never spins down. Samsung will probably never address the issue because its considered a "feature".

      • Have you tried changing the "Power Options" for the "Turn Off Hard Drive" to Never, or some other more acceptable length of time? (assuming usage of Vista and Windows 7, not sure about XP or other OS)

        • Sorry should have clarified I'm using OSX. However, just like W7 there is a system option for "Never Turn Off HDD" but it's being ignored. I think the option works for drives connected via sata but not USB. I could be wrong for Windows machines, however, because I haven't tested the HDD on one yet.

    • I had two of these die on me with 100% data loss in under 12 months. They were only switched on once a week max for backing stuff up. I would not recommend these drives if you value your data.

      • modtang i bought mine a few months ago. It also died after less than a month. It's still sitting on my shelf. How did you get it fixed? Did you send it back to the manufacturers (samsung/seagate)?

    • My GF and I both got these drives from diffrent Harvey Norman's a while ago and both died. I would not buy this model HDD there is a reason why they are cheap.

      • Warranty?

        • Yep but we both lost all the data on the drive. I managed to get a WD replacement from HN.

      • Was that the USB3.0 or USB2.0 model. You have me worried because I have two of the USB2.0 models for home moview/photo backup.

  • I had one die on me recently. And beware warranty is under Seagate and its rather painful.

    • Seagate? Isn't it a Samsung?

      • Seagate are buying up samsung and hitachi i think?

  • Spec's, anyone? Eg, How fast does it spin?

    • Good question. 5400rpm I believe. Better question: will it blend?

  • +1

I've got one that I use on my iMac as a partitioned Time Machine/Aperture folder drive.

The main problem I have found with it is when you power off the machine, the drive does not start back up by itself. You physically have to unplug and reconnect the drive.

I called Samsung, the first words out of his mouth were "We know that this drive does it, but it does not affect the usage so you cannot claim it as a warranty claim"!! This was with out me mentioning warranty.

Anyway I just have to remember to start it back up all the time.

  • Free shipping isn't a freebie. Regardless- thank you for the deal :)
