Auspost Gave My Parcel to a Random Person

I found a big problem with Auspost's missed parcel collection policy. It states that anyone that has an ID with the same address will be able to take my parcel even if it's addressed to another person. No authorisation from the receiver is required.
"You'll need to take suitable ID with you that matches either the name OR the address on the item."

So one of my parcel was left at post office for collection due to missed delivery (postie never knocks or ring the bell, WFH so im always home during delivery hours).
Went to the post office a couple days later to collect it but they can't find the parcel and it was marked as "delivered".
Talked to the staff at the counter. They said they handed it to someone with my exact address. Weird because I rented that place for almost 5 years now.
Might be an ex-tenant that didn't change the address on their ID.

Would I still be able to claim reimbursement from AusPost even though their policy states that they could give it to anyone with my address?

Seriously doubtful they gave it to someone with that address. The odd are astronomical. It's more likely that someone their had stolen the package or they lost it & came up with that excuse.

Gotta agree, I thought the same thing when I read the post…

    • Yeah I was a bit confused as how that could happen only now. Been collecting parcels for 5 years without any issues.
However, I frequent that post office and know most of the staff there so I believe it was an honest mistake. They also showed me evidence that it was collected by someone else.

      • What was the evidence?

DNA left at the scene. Staff trained up using this

I can't really say what it is as I don't want the staff to get into trouble because they are legally not allowed to.
And I don't want my future parcels to have spit on them so…

It's more about how did the person with your address even know it was there?
Probably someone with a similar address or they made a genuine error giving the package to the wrong person.

  • What was the parcel value?

$130 but I think I can only be compensated up to $100.

  • Would be most unusual for Post Office counter staff to hand over the parcel without also checking the name.
Besides, what form of ID could a person provide that has an address but not a name?

My wife collects parcels addressed to me pretty regularly. And honestly it would be a PITA if she couldn't because of work hours vs post office hours

    • It is a policy (a convenient one) that they can hand it to anyone who lives at the same household.
In OP’s case, they probably handed it mistakenly to someone else, possibly similar address.

  • My local LPO insists on SO's ID and signed note when I was picking up for SO. They refused when it was just my ID and signed note.

    Report them for theft

  • If you have an auspost card with that exact address you don't need photo ID.

    • I was thinking this too, the collection card is used to identify the parcel(s). OP, assuming you have the card and tracking ID?

      • Correct. I've never needed anything else other than the ID and my card.

      • Yeah I still have the collection card.
I was told staff gave the parcel to the person when they only handed in their driver's license.

    • But how would anyone else now OP had a parcel to collect? If some person was frequently checking for parcels at that address, that would seem odd surely?

I've had this happen, and then magically about 2 months later I get a notice to collect a parcel at the post office. The notes on the parcel had when they issued collection notices, and it had been at the post office all along.
I think your problem is with someone at the post office, not Australia Post.

I would agree with you. It is possibly that someone has picked up their parcel correctly, but acknowledged your parcel on the parcels list. This would be possible if they were using a manual acknowledgment system. Maybe ask them to check on their shelves again.

What did AusPost say when you asked them?

      Please hold…

      • Your call is important to us… stay on the line until you forget who you have called…. then hang up.

AusPost once handed me someone else's parcel. Same name as me, but different address.

They don't check names and addresses very closely.

  • Once a parcel of mine had the wrong address written on it by the postal staff when storing it out the back of the warehouse - you know how they sometimes write the address in black marker so it's easier to find out back? They wrote the wrong street number and had trouble finding it. Maybe your local PO had a similar mix-up and gave it to whatever the wrong address was and just scanned it in as delivered.
