I've Been Declined Twice for AmEx Card

Every credit application I do gets approved except AMEX . I have tried applying twice now and both times declined.

You don't meet their eligibility criteria for reasons they won't disclose. Stop applying for any more as it may affect your credit score.

Do you earn enough income as per their criteria? Have other credit cards with high limits? Asking for a credit limit that's too high?

    • My income meets their criteria . I always ask them to appoint the credit limit .

      • Just ask for the minimum credit limit. I have three accounts with Amex and I've never been rejected by them.

        Missed any repayments?

        • No never missed a repayment . No defaults

Use a service like creditsavvy (or similar) to check your credit score, which is used by credit cards. With 3-4 applications a year, you might be surprised.

        • They literally aren’t used by credit card companies at all.

Card companies have their own criteria
Your made up credit score isn’t one of them.

Those scores simply exist to get you to check you file monthly so they can on sell your data to companies that offer credit. They in turn get a commission if you signup. That’s why it’s “free to check your score”

          • @jimbobaus: I am not saying they use creditsavvy, but creditsavvy lists all the active credit accounts, mortgages, including updated monthly payments, and that's the same kind of information any credit check provides.

          • @jimbobaus: ANZ says they use information from Equifax, illion and Experian.

If you have enough applications to be able to say “everything else I apply for is approved” I’d probably rate you as more risky than most.

I have 2 credit applications in the last 4 years. I appreciate there are people on here who go through two or three credit cards a year, but lots of applications will be a warning flag to some companies.

    • Yeh i apply for 3 - 4 cards a year . I have been doing this for over 5 years , no issues always approved except with AMEX .

I suspect therein lies your answer. Your credit file will show your credit card applications and closures. Why would they approve someone who has a history of churning?

        • I get conditionally approved . But when they call me the next day to confirm the information in my application then they say it was declined ? Its not a system decline

          • @Youi2018:

            to confirm the information

            What info specifically?

            • @Ughhh: Confirm my income and expenses . I say the same information as in my application and then they say its declined

With every other bank they ask me for payslips after its been conditionally approved . And once i send them they approve it .

        • No other bank declines me even though I'm a. “ credit card churner”

so maybe call and ask Amex why?

I am 1 card a year and no luck with ANZ for 3 years all decline, where as the others is just fine.

SO just give up on Amex then or apply for a $395 annual fee one.

        • They don't give you the reason why when you ask

      • just a (curious/serious) question youi2018- how old are you and do you have, or plan to get in the future, a home loan.

The reason I don't apply for that many cards is I wonder how it affects my credit rating etc.
Having just gone through a home loan refinance, I know the bank asked me to reduce my credit limits where I could (only 3 cards held - 1 AMEX, 1 Visa, 1 M/card, always paid in full on time).

Im 33 and house paid off , not planning to get another home loan or any other loan in the near future

I think its a big misconception that enquires ruin your credit score . The things that actually ruin your credit score is defaults and bankruptcy .

Of course doing a credit card application every month might not be good to your score . But doing 3 - 4 applications a year will not ruin your score

  • Maybe your credit rating is too good and you always pay the full balance off each month. They may be looking for customers who spend lots but can't afford to pay the full balance each month.

Given AMEX business model is rooted in charge cards which require the balance paid in full I suspect they are more interested in OPs regular churning.

      • Yeah they can smell churn from far away which the OP is obviously doing.

      Good business model…

Loan money to people who can't pay it back…

      • Welcome back ….How was your time in the 'hole"? Did you make a shank?

  • Computer says no, no card for you.

Which amex are you going for?

    • Qantas American Express Premium

      • That's weird then, only requires $40k a year income. I applied for one of those cashback ones recently and they approved it without wanting payslips or anything.

        • Yeh salary is not a problem. Im on 80k . So i dont know why they are doing this

  • Have you ever had an Amex card? Maybe they blacklisted you for too many rinse and repeat

    • I have had only one about 3 years ago . Thats it

      • How many open cc do you have at one time?

        • I have 2 credit cards open atm

  • Have you ever contacted Amex to complain about something?

    • Nope never

    • I think this is why I am getting declined

  • $80K isn't alot these days before expenses. Stop applying, move on.
