TV Lift (Motorised) ~ $735 (US $780) + Delivery - Save US $100. TVs up to 60". OZ Site & Ship

90

I was shopping for a TV lift for our outdoor area to have a TV "pop out" of our bench for both security and cool wankiness and came across an Australian site which distributes lift kits from the US. Their US site had a sale on for "Valentines day" (nothing says 'I Love You' like a TV lift) so I emailed them and amazingly they said they would discount the Australian stock too - by US$100. They seemed to be some of the cheapest available for this (fairly specialised) product even without the discount, not that there is a lot of competition in this market.

Please read full post before considering rating this deal

First - what is a TV lift?
It is a linear actuator system that uses a remote control to raise and lower a TV that can be hidden in a cabinet.
Best to see what I mean:

Some important points to make clear:

  • I do not work for this company, I did however sign up for their automated affiliate program via their website mostly to get as much info (eg brochures) about the product before buying.

  • Website charges in US dollars but item ships from MELBOURNE warehouse

  • Shipping was ~$30 to Brisbane, you can check your state before buying

  • This is a specialised and expensive piece of equipment that most people won't be interested in but ozbargain is about saving money not just cheap stuff ($100 ain't bad).

Some negative points:
- The kit is still more expensive than the US site (listed as US$540 and the Oz site only lists 12 months warranty - the US comes standard with 3 years. You can buy extension if you want.
- In the video it looks slow (30 secs to full extension). Not for impatient people.

The specs:
There are 2 models with a 30" stroke length and a 36" stroke length, any TV with a VERTICAL HEIGHT less than the stroke should fit (up to 70kgs).
30" = (38" - 42" TVs)

36" = (43" - 60" TVs)

Non-affiliate links for both:

More specs at the bottom but keep in mind:
- Use 28 degrees MC to get better exchange/no fees.
- If you buy consider using my affiliate link even for the fact it took me half an hour to write this post up to include as much information as possible so it would not get neg'd.
- This kind of thing can be done with cheaper components but frankly who has the time?
- I bought one myself because I believe in this deal - not just promoting it.

  • pretty cool- would be good for an outdoor area, keeping it safe and waterproof.

  • so the main link contains an affiliate code :|
    that is a good price.

    • Yeah I couldn't find the ozbargain policy on that and included non affiliate links (clearly marked) in the thread.

Happy to have it updated if that is the case.

    • +1

It's all there as honest as it can be including problems with the offer (ie $240 more than what it is listed for on the US site with only 12 months warranty instead of 3 years). If someone has cheap freight forwarder consider getting it from there.

I was first looking at a projector set up with a motorised projector screen but there is too much ambient light where this has to go plus the projector screen might blow in the wind (lots of cross breeze).

I was looking at about $250 for projector screen + $1000 for maybe the BenQ 1080p projector that is listed in another thread for a nice 120" screen but didn't want to risk the problems listed above.

This set up would be more expensive - $765 for TV lift plus ~$1400 for 55" TV (LG listed in another thread here) makes it about $1000 more than projector but less likely to fail.

I came across these products, cheaper than I expected (no way did I think that it would be under $1000 for automated TV lift) and after a few emails to the US got $100 off the price. I am sharing this here for other ozbargainers who are interested.

You might want to get your nose checked ;)

For those that are interested but don't want to spend the money Instructables have some good write ups on linear actuators that you can DIY such as:
    http://www.instructables.com/id/Making-a-Powerful-Linear-Act…

It runs on 18V power drill but you would need balls of steel or great faith in your engineering skills before attaching a big TV to it :) (I accept no responsibility for what you do with your electronics). The whole area of linear actuators interested me back from when I saw a lifehacker article about a guy who set up his windows to auto-close when loud noises happened:
    http://lifehacker.com/5840567/this-diy-window-closer-jumps-i…

The TV lift website above (once again NOT spam) also sells linear actuators for under $200 - biggest I could find is 24" though. Warning: These are NOT on sale, I have not done any researching on prices and have no idea how these sit in the market - you need to do that yourself if you want to DIY it. I was only looking for TV lifts when I was wasting time at work. Ebay also have plenty of linear actuators that could be incorporated into a cheaper system.

  • +1 for building a pop up TV in your bench
kudos - I hope you succeed! Please post photos when you do!

  • …for both security and cool wankiness…

    +1 for that comment! :)

…for both security and cool wankiness…

I secretly wanted a patio TV, but was afraid of looking like a complete bogan.
Will this gadget be discreet, or just make me look like a nerdy bogan? Does such a group exist?

      • +2

I think they exist as the people who own commodores with neon lights underneath?

  • Plus one for wankiness

  • Dare I ask, as cool as this is, what is wrong with a lockable wall cabinet?

    • The only decent place for the tv is in front of a wall with plantation shutters (ie low cabinet only). Plus your friends aren't going to be jealous of a lockable cabinet ;)
