Another day another Canon camera deal. This one is similar to the offers posted previously from Harvey Norman.
The difference with this deal seems to be a slightly increased price but the inclusion of an 8GB SDHC card.
Might be some haggle room in there! Their website lists it as $486 without the SD card.
It was the Preston (Vic) store that I saw the offer in.
Hope someone finds this useful who missed out on the other deals.
Hi Pain - the difference is that the posted one comes with a single lens (although not a great one!) still that's a good price for the body only.
I'm clueless with cameras, just thought it might help.
Is it an IS lens. That makes a lot of difference to the cost and use of the lens

That one is also an import one - means the warranty isn't provided by Canon themselves.
OP, you should fix up the link to something other than the previous ozbargain entry. Either upload the pic from in store or link to the website or something that shows the deal.

The kit was $386. Also, Preston Harvey Norman is one of those stores which is quite hard to bargain with. It was one of the earliest to lift the $399 deal for this camera kit. Once, they agreed to hold an item for me and they actually decided to sell it before I got there (and did not even call me).
Frankly, ask Harvey Norman to at least make it $399 (or if they can $386). $438… no way, after so many people got it for $399 and $386. Try Harvey Norman Chadstone or Nunawading (if you in Victoria). If you are in NSW, try Harvey Norman Alexandria or Castle Hill.
In case you don't know, Canon is giving Harvey Norman rebate to sell these. Therefore, Harvey Norman should pass on the rebate to the customer, rather than trying to pocket some of that.
Preston Harvey Norman is one of those stores which is quite hard to bargain with， totally agreed, they asked for $1500 for the LG 47lw6500 when I showed them that I can get it from Binglee for $1235.
Lol you are not joking about being hard to bargain with! The best price match I've had there was today by matching the Betta Electrical Xoom tablet wifi/3g 32gb for $428. I almost fell over when they said yes!
Also had to laugh at the 'half-yearly' clearance poster. Did I do a rumple stiltskin and sleep for a few months/years? Hmm half year.

the reason why they sell held items is because people who asked for it to be on hold dont bother showing up. when they first had that sale, i went into the store around 5pm and they had about 8 on hold. obvisouly they wouldnt risk it not being sold.
I told the lady I'll be there within an hour. At least hold it for 1 hour should not be a big deal. The lady even told me "yes, it will be put on hold". If they are not willing to hold it, tell me, rather than waste my time. The lady did not even apologise.
Anyway, another Harvey Norman store held an item for my mate for 3 days.. and then called my mate to find out whether he still wants it.
New Canon DSLRs are coming. Canon should be clearing 550D and quite possible 600D as well. New DSLRs should come with Canon DIGIC 5 processor (or DIGIC 5+).
Unless you are in a hurry, there might be some nice Canon DSLR deals coming. Not sure about Nikon… Expeed 3 is on its way so there will most likely be some new models based on that chip.
Do you think the 550d will get much cheaper than the dse deal? (twin lens is kit for 696)?
Until Canon 650D is announced (assuming that's the model number for the 600D successor), DSE's 550D twin lens IS kit deal is hard to beat.
However, I am not a fan of the twin lens kit. If you are a beginner like me, changing lens is not something you want to do often. To me, neither one of those lenses is sharp enough (I know some people will disagree). Single lens kit is okay (because you basically pay $30-$40 for that lens - compared to body only). Is the second lens (50-200mm) for $130 a big bargain to you? If yes, then go for twin lens kit.
Every person I know who owns a DSLR told me NOT to get a twin lens kit (that includes a person who owns a twin lens kit). The friend who knows most about DSLR also told me to get a better lens rather than any one of the kit lenses.
If you can get it cheaper without the kit lens, get it without, don't waste your money on the kit lens. You will ended up buying better lenses anyway.

If you would look at the MTF charts, the sharpness of the normal zoom isn't far off the maximum resolution of the 15mp 50D sensor.

Obviously the 1k difference is in build quality and light gathering ability but the resolution(albeit at different aperture ranges) is not all that different. I'd be looking towards focus issues or shutter speed if you are not getting the expected sharpness.

The telephoto isn't quite as impressive but very good for a consumer telezoom - you would have to spend significantly more for better, as with the above.
The blemished reputation of kit lenses was somewhat justified a few years ago but the newer revisions, i.e. the above 18-55 and other brands' equivalents, are pretty damn good. There are obviously reasons to buy new lenses but sharpness isn't the main one.
Another thing to consider is that people buying a consumer camera don't even know everything they can do with a DSLR to be able to decide what they want from it. A twin lens kit gives you a huge range of focal lengths to be able to take all sorts of shots. For instance, for me I purchased the camera intending to use it at a wedding and for my coming child, but so far I've been using the zoom lens more with astrophotography and other things.

Not me; I sold my DSLR gear a couple of years ago in favour of returning to film, and with mirrorless systems getting better and better I doubt I'll be going back to a DSLR. My next digital camera will probably be a Fuji X-Pro1. :)
and I have sold my CD collection and am getting it all on vinyl, and I'm also selling my car and getting a horse
