  • Bought the standard one last week, this is a darn fine mouse. Aybussus V2 is the go for ambi-mouses though if you can get one.

    But I only have a 4K screen

  • What's the advantage of 8KHz?

    • A quick Google search gave this:

"Attain the next level of absolute control with the Razer Viper 8KHz—an ambidextrous esports gaming mouse with a true 8000 Hz polling rate for the fastest speed and lowest latency ever achieved. Upgraded with 2nd-gen Razer™ Optical Switches, it’s time to rise to the occasion and leave it all on the floor."

    • I've seen a handful of reviews written by people who have tested it (not entirely scientifically) and have noted faster response times at the PC end and greater "ease of use" when it comes to high intensity gaming.

The marketing angle is that as display refresh rates get higher and higher, it starts to expose more flaws (like jittering).

A 1KHz polling rate (the most common) is equivalent to a 1ms update, 8KHz means 0.125ms… We are getting into microsecond territory here. While I believe this isn't a gimmick and I'm all for advancement in tech, I doubt very much that the difference is noticeable here other than mostly placebo effect unless you're an uber cyber-athlete.
I will say though, this is a much better race than the dpi race.

        • One review from Reddit:

Switching away from 8000hz was a much more noticeable change than the initial 1000 —> 8000hz transition. After a few days getting used to the higher polling rate, 1KHz felt slightly "duller", as if more effort was required to hit similar shots. It's a similar (but far less exaggerated) feeling to dropping monitor refresh rates - like you're more-or-less aiming the same way, but somehow the hits don't connect as often. That being said though, within a few rounds I got used to it and 1000hz felt as good as it always did.

Overall, I feel mostly convinced it's not placebo effect, and it does appear that 8000hz can indeed affect in-game performance in a meaningful way. Keep in mind I am using a 240hz DyAc display for all this - your mileage regarding actually noticeable improvements will vary enormously depending on what hardware you have.

        • This isn't a gimmick or a placebo, it directly relates to the increasing refresh rates.

We'll likely be seeing 480Hz panels going into production in the 18 months, and as that number climbs - and it will continue to 1000Hz and beyond for reasons to do with both human vision and the behaviour of photoreceptor cells in the eye - polling rates need to go up so that the difference between the screen referesh and sensor poll (which is not synced) is minimised.

360Hz and even modern 240Hz monitors are showing up issues with 1000Hz mice.

There's a few great threads on the Blurbusters forums covering this, but this one has it fairly summarised and diagrammed: https://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7569

Marketing says: Bigger numbers more gooder.

    144hz vs 240hz scenario

  • Works faster with the new Windows 11 start menu. Now you only have a 1 nano second lag when your brain and hand goes to the left, before realising that it's in the middle.

  • Absolutely love the ergonomics of an ambi mouse. I find the new norm of having to rigt side fall away on a right hand mouse kills my wrist.

      • Ooph those are horrific. I tried using one for about 3 months and far out I was never worse. I grew up with normal mice, and think I've just got used to that posture.

Also ambi mice are great for using them left handed to balance out balance/brain.

  • Would highly recommend Endgame Gear XM1r if you aren't a fan of the Viper clicks. I made the switch and the clicks are so much better. I prefer the feel of it too. Also no annoying right side buttons like the Viper has. Had some double clicking develop recently but fixed it with a firmware update.
