Sennheiser HD 560S Open-Back Headphone $249 Delivered @ Sennheiser Australia

310

Now at an all-time low! Tthe newest headphone in Sennheiser's lineup, and the most neutral in the modern 500 series while maintaining its capacity for great soundstage and imaging at an affordable price. A tiny bit of spice in the treble, along with great bass and treble extension for an open back in this price range, this is a pretty easy recommendation for those looking for an entry level open back for things like competitive gaming, EDM-based tracks and just general usage.

I still recommend demoing these before you buy, as you may find their modest 5kHz spike disagreeable due to individual ear anatomy (pinna gain). High sensitivity headphones, so easy to use these with pretty much anything.

This is also available at Amazon, Addicted to Audio, and Minidisc for the same price delivered - and likely more retailers as I assume this is an EOFY deal - but I am posting this as a Sennheiser deal due to 7% cashback offerings, which should shave around $17 off.

There's also a targeted offer for 15% off with AmEx Statement Rewards.

This is worth comparing against the AKG K612 Pro - which is available via the UK on Amazon for $208, and maybe locally for around $220 - for those who are seeking something a little more flat, though you may need an amp to get the best out of it.

How does this compare to, say, Massdrop version of HD58X?

    • +2

The 58X is more warmer but with more of a bass roll-off, some people rate that headphone for its timbre as well. This is probably a shade behind on timbre, but has more resolution and detail, better imaging and soundstage (though both are good in that respect).

The 58X also has a sharp cut after the presence range, presumably to remove hiss in older music, while the 560S has a slight lift in the presence range. Basically the 58X is the 500 series' answer to the 6XX, and the 560S has more in common with the 600, but it does this with an updated driver that has a few additional strengths at the price point.

If you're interested in positional accuracy and an even presentation of the audio (i.e. typically as the artist wished it to be presented), this is a great headphone. If you're more interested in furthering detail, vocal timbre and resolution again at the expense of width and positional accuracy, you're better off looking at the HD 6XX anyway.

But like I said in the description: try this against the AKG K612 Pro.

  • Cheap but not good. Senheiser is a bit weird. Their headphones have very different styles. I really hate the sound of HD599(formerly HD598) But I F-ing love the sound of HD650. I love the HD650 sound more than anything I heard. For me, even the HD800 is not as good as HD650. I personally own many headphones. And I really love the Senheiser sound from HD600 and HD650. I personally think HD650 is simply the king.
For this one I did not heard it before but I think it should be similar to the HD599 but not as good as it regarding the price. And I simply canot bear the sound of HD599. I think it is trash personally.

    • This is an updated driver, so it's a step up from the usual 500 series fare. The 599 has way more bass roll off, and is a warmer, less detailed sound that can leave vocals almost recessed.

This has more in common with the HD 600, while being technically and tonally inferior, with the exception of soundstage, bass extension and imaging.

Senheiser is a bit weird. Their headphones have very different styles.

      This.

Sennheiser headphones come in two basic kinds: tinnier than a f**king Milo can with ridiculously treble-heavy sound (about 70% of their product range) or more bass-boosted than YouTube earrape remixes (30% of their product range).

They just can't for the life of them make balanced headphones.

      • earrape

        Lol

        • +1

Yeah it's a meme. Basically any old piece of music that's been music bass-boosted to the point where it threatens the physical integrity of your headphone drivers.

  • Would these be as good as my barely hanging on hd515's ?
Anywhere to compare the sound profiles?

    • Before my time in headphones, but from what I'm reading, these would be an improvement in many areas, just not too similar tonally.

If you're looking for great timbre and mellow signature without worrying too much about soundstage and imaging, would look into upgrading to the HD 6XX via Drop, and that'd be $310 currently. It's an enormous upgrade for you.

      • Thanks for the tip. When the fraying cable eventually breaks I'll look at those. Hopefully the build quality is still good for 8h+/day for 15+ years!

  • DMS does a great comparison of these with the 6xx if you need a opinion on these.

    • +3

I've added some better quality rerviews to the description. I don't hype these as much as he does, and I don't think anyone does, so I'd probably steer clear of his commentary for the most part.

He also loves Beyers stock, so I think he just doesn't hear some treble spikes.

      • More reviews the better!

  • Same price at Minidisc if that helps those locked down in Sydney. Tossing up getting a pair, probably not.

    • Mentioned in the description already, but I provided the wrong link!

      • +3

Ah, I should read descriptions. Great post Op!

There's also 15% off $100 spend with amex for anyone interested

    • Thanks, will add!

    • Will the Amex offer stack with the 7% cash rewards if I go through the Cashrewards site?

      • i don't see why not. It's just regular spend with a card that amex reimburses you for

  • Man what are you doing to me :D you probably were waiting for my comment haha.

But resisting this one as I have my HD6XX on the way in the next few days and HE-X4 behind that.

I think I am ready to move to the next level for my next purchases :P

But good price. Also worth adding they do look and feel quite plasticy for those who might be expecting a top of the line build quality at this price.

  • Hi audiophilers,
Quick question please, are these anywhere comparable (in terms of sound quality) to the bose 700 or sony mx4?
Heard alot about the hd6xx but preferred to get a noise cancelling, did I do a mistake here? :D

As I appreciate sound quality, but hadn't a chance to try many headphones unfortunately.

    Thanks

Different product type. Open back vs closed back. You won't beat open backs, but you'll annoy the person sitting next to you on the train (hint, these aren't commuters).
Open backs don't sound as muffled but they (hence the name) let sounds both in and out.

You buy noise cancelling if you use your headphones in a noisy environment. You buy open backs if you don't.
Most of my headphones are closed backs because I listen either commuting, at work (to drown out the stupid chatter), at home woodworking, or on flights (not so much these days…).
If I'm sitting down late at night listening to music when everyone's gone to bed, out come the open backs.
They sound a lot more natural

Both the 560S and 6XX shit on both from quite the height, because ANC weakens audio quality, bluetooth weakens audio quality and closed back headphones tend to have issues with timbre and treble. In addition to all of that, both of those headphones are tuned with too much bass, but that you can adjust. Once you've flatten out that bass hump a bit, they're both perfectly listenable, but they're still not amazing headphones from the perspective of sound quality. What they do well is cancel noise and have nice features for portability.

In 3 years time, ML-based noise cancelling and Bluetooth standards will be in such a space that these, and the last 2 generations of ANC headphones will look like cheap toys. If you were buying for at-home use in a reasonably quiet environment, you made an odd choice, and probably would have preferred the 6XX, particularly for vocal-focused music.

Assuming you want to return those and still want to buy something like the 6XX - and that your budget doesn't extend much beyond that - look into the AKG N700NC M2 @ $100-$120 for well tuned basic ANC for commute, or if you want to push portable sound quality while still getting decent isolation, look at the Etymotic ER2XR @ $100-$120 on Amazon.

      • Thanks alot for these options, so if I am not mistaken, open cups are the best quality then closed ones, correct? As I will be using it at home so it doesn't matter actually.

        Thanks again for these information

        • That's spot on: open backs offer more natural sound.

The 6XX isn't the most spacious sounding, but vocals and detail on it are very special, especially for the price.

      • Thanks for the information and your other posts, where do you get the AKG speakers for that price? Cheers.

        • They've been sub-$100 a few times, but right now the best you can probably do is $120 if a 20% eBay code comes up for one of the related stores selling it.

It's a product that's being discontinued I believe (and they'll issue a new headphone either with the next Galaxy Note or Galaxy phone), so I wouldn't wait for that kind of price again, and instead just take any offer $120 and below if you're buying very soon. If you can wait, just wait for new product lineups.

ANC headphones are dropping in price all the time now though so expect new products to come in at various price points and do a better job (read up about Bluetooth 5.2 and LC3 Plus codec), and again, you'll get better quality out of the IEMs I suggested, with good TWS IEMs being in the same price range (Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Buds+).

Get the HD569. It is around $200 at Addicted to Audio. As per Sennheiser Insiders, it is the best closed back headphone ever produced by Sennheiser or any other company.

According to sennheiser insiders, hd569 is the best closed back headphone ever made by sennheiser or any other company

    • Products like the 569 are why Sennheiser sold their consumer audio business. Get the AKG K371 instead, though maybe wait for it to go back down to $150-$170 again.

      • Thanks. Does AKG K371 it use 3.5mm connector or custom one?

        • 3.5mm output, but connects to the headphone via mini-XLR. Comes with a two straight 1.2 and 3m cables, as well as a coiled 3m cable. There's also a 3.5mm to 6.3mm adaptor for use with most amps.

Amazon is the place to go for best price.

Amazon AU have joined the party now

$249.95 as per the other stores

Thanks OP! I ordered a pair from Sennheiser and used Shopback (7%) which ended up being A$15.91 (I think because it does not include GST). Amazon currently has 0.00% shopback on headphones, so directly from Sennheiser is a better deal.

  • Do you have a decent budget amp recommendation for this headphones? I’m mainly using this headset for pc gaming

    • Given the impedance isn't huge and the sensitivity is fine, Apple's USB-C to 3.5mm adapter is a good starting point, but it will cost you a little bit of control in the bass and probably the upper treble.

  • It is currently out of stock. Any chance it will be back in stock before the Amex promo ends (in 2 days)?

    • Seems unlikely, but you've got the option of the other listed retailers, including Amazon, though I don't think any are offering an active cashback.

Looks like it's back in stock now.
