Don't buy this for playing movies it stretches the picture to full screen because it cannot recognize aspect ratios, as far as I know they don't plan on realeasing any firmware updates to fix it.

  • Yeah any other recommendations for MKV files ?

    • WDTV Live is the only media player worth having. I bought the new version (with wireless) on Saturday for $118 from Wow (ring around and you will get that price). I have two of the old version and the new version found my NAS (linux OS, handles anonymous connections) but would not connect. Gave up and took it back. I work in IT all day and don't want to feck around with that sort of stuff at night.

Ended up buying a second hand WDTV Live (wired network only) for $61 on Ebay.

If anyone finds a new (old model wired) WDTV, please post as they are awesome.

BTW, easily plays full HD mkv files - 13 gig in size easily.

Why not just get WDtv live and buy a really cheap USB wireless plug for about $13.

        • USB wireless plug would not help … I was ABLE to get the network, just not connect to the NAS (as in the way the old WDTV would). It is most likely some way that the new version connects and I couldn't be bothered working it out. I just bought the old version second hand.

      • I've got one I might be looking to sell.

      • WDTV Live does not handle RM, RMVB files. Weak!.

    • I am planning to buy the Astone M310DT
      $109

      • I have just recently purchased the Boxee Box, it is a very solid unit and great software (XBMX) however the letdown is the suposedly "free" online content, its not so free or available for us 2nd class citizenz here in Australia - only in the US! So I was also considering either the Astone 310DT (where did you get it for $109?) or the WDTV Live (where are they available for $118?). Is the ASTONE reliable as I have read some negative comments.

        • i-tech had the MP310 for $109 last time, but it's gone up to $119 now, but you can get the AP300 for $91

        • My post above says Wow (Sight and Sound) - I rang Office Works and Wow, both places bargained down to $119 over the phone. I complained I didn't need the wireless version, how much will you do the new one for.

Any new player with either the Realtek 1186 or Sigma 8910 chipset. All these brands use generic hardware, often from the same factory, so firmware and price is all it comes down to (ACRyan, Astone, Egreat etc). The older chipsets from both are more than capable of playing big MKV files at ridiculous bit-rates but these new ones are also 3d capable as well and have enough grunt to be a fully functional web browser and more. The realtek is the one I prefer and has the tuner as an optional add-on and dual boots into android out of the box. Still sfa power usage so a much better option than a htpc.

This is one of the first I've seen in this country and it's actually a bit cheaper than I thought it would be at release. The Xstreamer Prodigy is an 1186 player so google that if you want to read reviews but it's more expensive than the generic ones.

  • I am a big Ac Ryan supporter but I don't really want to spend close to 100 bucks for the bedroom tv.

  • WDTV the older ones had problems playing DTS through HDMI. It only output sound through the optical cable. That was the only problem I found with them.
